5.30 mins of useful content. 👏 Thank goodness there are still people that can explain simple things in a simple way, I believe many got tired from hours long videos full of stuff we don't need.

Just a tip: if you put tulip bulbs in the fridge, make sure you label them clearly! I had a friend who wanted to surprise the family by making dinner for us. He thought the tulip bulbs were shallots and you can guess what happened - the Boeuf Bourguignon ended up tasting a bit ... flowery!

This is one topic that I have been experimenting & researching on since COVID started as I love potted bulbs indoors during the cold winter. I used to get this awesome bulb garden at a grocery store that had tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, irises and crocuses & loved it. The issue is I can't find these anymore as the grocery store closed down. You can order a potted bulb plant online but they are like $80, so I thought I try this out on my own. So I bought me a dorm fridge (which my son will use when he goes to college in a few years), and put the bulbs in paper bags labeled for 20 weeks.. Then I potted them up and left them in the basement. I have tried planting the tulips, with a tete a tete daffodil, hyacinth and some mini iris or crocuses. They work semi well. My tulips get really leggy & tall & I don't understand why the ones at the grocery store (basic 6" pot with tulip bulbs) don't get that way being really tall. Last year, I had some success, but I just used some of the tulips that I was planting outside. This year, I researched and got many early tulips - Fosteriana and Early Prince ones... my results have been iffy. I have them in a smaller 6" pot, so maybe that is my issue. I need to have them in a smaller pot so the cats don't get at them as they are poisonous to them. Anyway, I planted 10 different pots with different variations of tulips, it seems the ones that I cooled in the fridge & then planted them up into pots & left them in our cold detached garage or outside in a bin. I also tried potting up some tulip bulbs & waited until they froze & then put them in a plastic bin & insulated them with styrofoam or whatever & then removed that when the temps warmed up for good. I think I was partly successful for this. I was informed that what makes them turn to mush is the freezing and defrosting over & over.... as in the ground they stay one temp. Hope this helps!

Wow! I'm in awe. I'm totally doing this! I live in an apartment. I bought bulbs, but then, management took down the planters on the windows! This will be wonderful!

This is really helpful. I’ve tried to pot them up and overwinter them in the unheated garage but they usually just rot - too cold in Nebraska! I have an old dorm refrigerator from my kids’ college days so I can dedicate it to bulbs this fall.

Last winter I had some bulbs I didn't get planted and instead of letting them sit over winter I potted them up thinking I'd have some early indoor flowers. I didn't know Tulips needed chill hours so when things weren't happening under the grow light I set them in a dark corner. The area in my basement is cooler but definitely not near freezing, maybe 50-55 degrees. After two to three weeks of sitting in the dark, drying out as I didn't water once I moved them, they started to break through the soil. I moved them to the light and started a regular watering routine. I was able to get Exotic Emperor, and Queen of the Night to both bloom. I must've got lucky.

I tried putting them in the planter and covered the planter to keep moisture out but the bulbs still rotted. I probably should have taken them off the porch where they were covered with snow and tried keeping them in the shed. I like this method much better though and will try it next year. The potted tulips will still have to go outside because of the cats but we'll see what happens. Thank you Danielle!

I always find your videos so informative and helpful! I did force tulips this year, but did it in gallon containers and I like your approach better. I have about 6 gallon containers that the tulips are all spent and finished. What do I do with the bulbs now? Do I throw them away or is there a way to let the bulbs stay in these containers and if so, how long? Could I pull up the bulbs and store them some way so that I could use them again to do this next year? Side note: My tulips, even though I planted them 6 inches deep in the gallon containers, got to be 20 inches tall - I had to stake them! I had different varieties and they all got so tall.

So if you blossom them indoors as you outline (I have several planters doing that now and they are spectacular and such a joy!), once finished blooming and says it’s March, can you remove the bulbs from the indoor pots and plant them outdoors ‘now’ and will they ‘simply’ adjust and be just fine and bloom again outdoors next Spring?

ok, I bought some tulip bulbs in the fall and planted some outside and wanted to plant some now inside for blooms in March. I did not refrigerate them though! i kept them in my cool basement, but certainly not below 60 degrees. the bulbs all have yellow shoots. If I plant these now will they flower? I also have hyacinth bulbs from Easter flowers last year that I saved. these have been in the basement for 9 months. these bulbs are also sprouting. will these flower if planted now? Or should I just put these in the fridge and wait till next year? thanks!

Question.....what do you do with forced bulbs after they bloom? If you leave them outside in the pot and let the foliage die back and plant them in the ground, will they come back and bloom the next year? Or is forcing a one time thing and then the bulbs are discarded? Thanks!

I have been trying this for a couple of years -- some tulips will bloom again if they died back naturally but many did not - daffodils, hyacinths and other minor bulbs came back after I planted them.
