Affectionately referred to as the "Poor Man's SPS," Gorgonians has a special place in my heart along with a few other easier to keep corals like the Finger Leather or the Frogspawn. It is not often that we find vertical growing corals that are easy to keep, so the Gogonain (Sea Fan) genre is on my list of top corals to keep in among my reef tanks!

For my sun coral I used the top of a plastic bottle. Cut the top off, put it over the coral and just fed through the top. Let it sit a while to let it smell it and open up, then blow it around so the heads can grab it. Definitely keeps the food thiefs out. Great video!

I've had a yellow finger gorgonian for about 4 months now with no issues. I feed a big variety of small foods rotifiers, fish eggs, pods, reef roids and plankton multiple times a day. If you get one just make sure to keep them clear of algae or they won't have any polyp extension.
@gsander4837
@gsander4837 4 жыл бұрын
Love gorgonians. My fav and mostly overlooked by most hobbyist. Feeding nps gorgonians requires a very small or micro food. Very fine. Best to feed several times a day. If the food is to large they spit it out. It appears they are feeding as the polyps will react to the food, but they actually will spit the food out as they can’t ingest it. They Love flow and in a dim location of the tank. If they live longer than 6 months you are doing it right
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 4 жыл бұрын
Good tip on the food being spit out part... sounds like the polyp capturing the food particle is only half the battle! This will be an interesting journey for me, thank you for this thing to watch out for.

Inappropriate Reefer i truly believe this is one contributing factor why they do not survive in hobbyist tanks, plus placement. No direct overpowering lights. There is a good video from MACNA by Matt Wandell that is very informative on nps systems, feeding and care. I suggest you search for it and watch it at your convenience.

Awesome video! Loved how your transitions and everything was so smooth! I have used a mix of reef roids and phytoplankton in the tank to feed yellow finger gorgs, and they always have great polyp extension. Usually either have slow flow or no flow and let them capture whatever they can in the meantime

Inappropriate Reefer I backtracked a bit due to phosphates getting out of hand, but after getting a better way to export nutrients it’s making a comeback. You should be fine, you have kept sun corals and they require feeding and good water parameters due to their stony skeleton

Ive had a long journey with my yellow finger gorg. Finally think I have the right recipe for growth and long term success. Currently feeding baby brine shrimp twice a day plus aminos and phyto. I've had a massive turnaround since starting
@Yaj8552
@Yaj8552 4 жыл бұрын
Twice a day?? Oh shoot! That must be my problem! I do reefroid+ live phyto but not nearly as often. It was doing good, then bad. Now looks bad -like tissue degradation, but nice polyps. Kinda confusing me. But I'll add some aminos too. Do you do frozen or live baby brine shrimp?
@fragile880
@fragile880 4 жыл бұрын
So I read in an inverts book that those gorgs come from cooler water that brings copepods in mass with the tides. So before the lights come on and right after they turn off I add freshly hatched baby brine. Yes my nutrients are high but my corals are happy!
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing this! Twice a day may be a bit ambitious for my schedule, was hoping for once a day or once every other day. Need to think about this! Are you actually hatching BBS or using the instant ones that come in a jar? (I use the latter for my Dwarf Rainbows)
@fragile880
@fragile880 4 жыл бұрын
I know it sounds a bit crazy but it's not as bad as you think. BrineShrimpDirect hatchery separate the bbs perfectly in small doses. And you can feed from it for 2-3 days. It has a tiny scoop that I take out and dunk in my tank twice a day. Super easy.

Best thing I used to do is to cut the top 3rd off a coke bottle, get rid of the cap for now , place over the sun coral when feeding it , u may have to keep it weighted down depending on flow, and squirt the reef roids into the neck , of the bottle, try and get a feeding response beforehand by adding liquid coral food to the system, if the shrimp attempt to steel the food from tentacles , jus put the lid on the bottle
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Neil, I have constructed a shield like that and it is working well. Do you only feed your Sun Corals ReefRoids, or do you use chunkier food as well?
@neilstewart9286
@neilstewart9286 4 жыл бұрын
Inappropriate Reefer , I feed them mysis and anything of that size , I prefer to feed the tank reef roids aswell , and target feed with the chunkier foods, as I said try a liquid coral food and jus drip 1 drop into the tank and wait for the feeding response of the tentacles then target feed, I loved putting the 1 drop in and everything wakes up , n shrimps come to the front looking for food , good times

This is a great video. Thanks for taking the time to create it. Can you tell me if it's possible to frag a single branch? I have a single stalk plume exactly the same as the one you frag in this video. I didn't have enough flow for it and it has started to lose tissue on some of the branches and the base however some of the branches are still healthy although I'm assuming I will eventually lose the whole frag because of the tissue loss at the base. Can I frag the healthy branches? Also, is it possible for the frag to recover once the base starts to disintegrate? Thanks again for the very helpful video!

My grubbs did well in high intermittent flow for a year- so I thought! When I changed tank flow and now it gets moderat flow, and has exploded in growth-3x in last 5 months than year prior. As always, individual animals are just that -and havent read the internet, so dont know what they should have! I believe the main reason for high flow is to keep algae growth down-in a balanced tank this should not be a problem.
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 4 жыл бұрын
Good data point Scott! I will do this test with a few Gorg frags as well. Another question I run into is what one considers high flow may be low to another person, there is no standard way to measuring flow at one spot (there is tank turn-over rate). Hoping to rig something up to address this. 🤔
@scottclark7592
@scottclark7592 4 жыл бұрын
@@InappropriateReefer Very true- the light and flow descriptions often are vague at best. The flow on this grubbs was high enough all the polyps moved to one side of the stalks-so I think it qualified as high flow!
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 4 жыл бұрын
@@scottclark7592 Follow-up question... in the initial spot, was the flow so high that polyps that were directly facing the flow did not open? Or they were still open? (trying to understand whether the Grubbs would tell us if the flow is too strong)
@scottclark7592
@scottclark7592 4 жыл бұрын
@@InappropriateReefer They either moved to the leeward side, or only opened on that side So it would be like a pipe cleaner with on half shaved off the windward side. I can say the polyps did not instantly become oriented around the stem immediately after changing flow-but it took a month or two.
