I have a question or two: 1. What grade of 2x4 did you use? (Or did you just put it through the planer?) - your wood looks a lot better than I get at Home Depot where I am from. 2. With the hangers 16 OC, what sort of weight load could that ceiling? (You aren't using this space for storage, but that's my use case). If the wall has studs with 2x4s 16 OC and I use 2x4 16 OC cross pieces as you did using the hangers, what sort of weight load would be supported? (I'm looking at putting 1/2" ply with 12mm scratch resistant laminate flooring on top of that. My space is 7' long, 3' 5" wide, and about 32-33" once the ply and the laminate is installed. 3.5" width on 16" centers probably will handle a fair bit of weight but I don't know what 'a fair bit' is, so any guess?

If you’re doing all that, you might need to use sticks bigger than 2x4s. If it’s just for light storage like empty suitcases, the 2x4’s might be ok, but for any real weight you’re going to want to use 2x6’s, or at the least you can sister together two 2x4’s with glue and nails (or screws). Then you’d have 3”x3 1/2” sticks. Much stronger.

My framer said the same thing. Difference is experience is learned.
