Ps thanks for posting the great vid so people can see real framing in action. The negative comments aren't justified in my opinion. There are many little tricks average folks could absorb from it even though it is not a complete step by step tutorial. I dont think they realize it would be a super long video to show a complex project like this in detail.

In this example the box was 40mm deep providing adequate depth for long term protection of the framed jersey. There was an additional frame that you don't see being fitted in the video that provided the extra space required. UV glass was also included as part of the preservation process. Fix-a-Frame is located in Brisbane Australia there is a large fluctuation of temperature and humidity which is why extra care is taken to prevent mould growth within the picture frame. Thanks for your concern.

I've been framing for over 50 years and during that time my methods and materials have changed quite a lot. The time taken to frame any item has been reduced resulting in more customers. I was wondering about your method, as while the finished article looks identical from the front, is completely different from the back to the job I do. The reason I mention this is to do with replacing the glazing if it gets broken. I can re-glaze a football shirt in under 10 mins as the backing board sits inside the frame ( just ) with the shirt still well away from the glass. It also looks as though you use the same moulding as me plus I position the hangers at the same level as you. I must say that while we differ in the finishing, your job looks really good, better than 95 % of others I've seen. By the way, I'm not some old fart even though I,m nearly 70. The women think I'm in my late 40s so keep it quiet.

Thanks John for your comment. Each frame we make may have the backing at a different level depending on the moulding and the items on the inside. Although most picture framers have access to modern equipment and methods the techniques and time taken on complex job still involves a lot of time invested by the framer. Some mat cutting operations can be quicker with computerised cutters but then the designs tend to get more complex so there is still a design time which adds to the overall labour in any job. Reglazing work is one of those areas where things might go quickly or sometimes they might be slower depending on who has originally framed the work and how the glass has been broken. When a picture has fallen off the wall in many cases the frame joins are broken so reglazing can in some cases take far longer due to other repairs. Often older works when they need new glass inserted reveal other issues like poor mounting methods or degraded material that need replacing. Putting new glass in is one of those jobs that at first glance can look simple and in some cases it is but other times it opens a can of worms. Plus nowadays many people use some of the anti-reflective type glazing, NOT the old diffused glass, but the high clarity low reflection variety. When this is used it does take longer to assemble because it is harder to clean well and every littl imperfection shows so the investment of time increases. Thanks again for your comment. Your secret is safe with me. No-one is really an old fart until they think they are so I hope you continue to impress your admirers. Best regards, David Schummy

Thanks for the positive comment. Full training for all types of framing is given personally in framing classes and some video training is inside our membership sites. Just been working on a new framer's club which will launch later this year where detailed basic and professional level techniques will be published for members. The wise framers are the ones who continue to learn and be mentored and professionally coached. People should remember just buying a cookbook doesn't make you a Masterchef

The size of frame is usually determined by several factors but if you mean the rebate size then a common choice is 40"x32" because this is the largest size from a standard mat board but we use many different sizes and profiles of frames. If you just need a sheet of glass cut to size and you are in Brisbane, Australia you can get some cut whilst you wait at Fix-a-Frame in Mt Gravatt. You may choose a conservation glass to prevent fading. It is best to discuss this with a qualified framer. Thanks

Thanks for the heads up. Most of what is shown in the video is how to do the framing of a football jersey but I agree it doesn't show you the basic frame making skills that you would have to have to do this as a beginner. For beginner instruction you can read the how to frame series on amazon or visit the picture frame class website. It does assume that the viewer has some *basic* understanding of picture framing and that they can seek out the other information required to fully understand steps

Hi ArtMechanics, the space is around 25mm in this frame. We refill our spray bottles with a home mix of glass cleaner. Most cleaners consist of water, alcohol, ammonia and something to control the streaks. The commercial cleaners also are coloured blue to make people feel better. Blue is a clean colour...joke. I'm personally pretty anti-aerosol type cleaners but a local company to us makes a killer aerosol glass cleaner for UV glass otherwise I've found the TRU-Vue cleaner good on all products

Hi Nicole, sorry for the background noises but this was actually a real job underway in our framing workshop in Brisbane. It was not an instructional video for learning how to frame jerseys but an overview. If you are interested keep your eyes out for my series of kindle books that outline various framing techniques soon to be released. Beginners need to get the basics down first and then progress to advanced techniques. Checkout the pictureframeclass for a starting point.

Sweating, Condensation and mould are constant problems that picture framers face. Some of the measures that Fix-a-frame takes to prevent mould include adequate spacing within the frame, the application of bump-ons to the back of the frame to promote air circulation and the selection of archival materials that are used in the framing processes. Fungicidal measures are taken where necessary and clients are always advised of the care required to ensure long-term enjoyment of their pictures.

Qualified Picture Framers have the integrity and longevity to ensure that the work they undertake survives the test of time. When you think of framing a picture it is wise to look at all the options like museum grade matting, conservation framing techniques and the use of archival materials. All picture frames are not made equally well. Fix-a-Frame has experience that pre-dates the artcare developments of Nielsen and Bainbridge and the development of Tru-Vue Glass. Brisbane's choice since 1991

The costs of making frames to fit memorabilia varies considerably from framer to framer and job to job. Some of the things like UV glass to protect the items is more expensive than just plain glass as is using some archival boards as opposed to just common coloured boards. Giving you a price without assessing the work would just be giving you a bum steer so to speak so I would encourage you to give Fix-a-Frame a call or send an email and an outline of the variables could be forwarded to you.

Nice video. I have been watching your videos for a while now. Very informative and helpful. Do you have any suggestions on a hockey jersey? They are heavier then the jerseys I have seen you do, as well they have full sleeves, and many of them have rather large shoulder patches on them making them awkward to position.
@DavidAntalSchummy
@DavidAntalSchummy 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback and question. Many of the older football jerseys we had to do in the past were much heavier and long sleeved although they didn't have the added shoulder pads. Usually you could lay the jersey out and try a few different folds to see what looks best. You may need additional stitches rather than pinning when it comes to holding it in position. With some of the heavier boxing gloves, leather jackets, etc that we have framed we've used stainless steel wire to support the weight. Maybe you could look at what type of support, maybe an acrylic armature inside the shoulders and allow it to hang more naturally. That will take a deeper frame but I'm sure there is a solution. Occasionally we've added a formed perspex box that protrudes outwards from the rebate allowing a deeper object to be framed in a shallower frame. A plastic fabricator could help you with this part. When you've worked it out I'd love to see a photo of the finished jersey so we can refer to it when we have similar challenge. Kind regards, David Schummy

If you are interested in further picture frame training I usually broadcast live at least once a month to the framersclub members and there is also basic training available live via either the fixaframe or easyhomeframer. If there are topics you need covered please let me know so I can add it to my list of videos to make. Your feedback is much appreciated. Thank you again for your kind words. Although I found this rather interesting it did not help me in ANY way. I see how a professional would do it but I was searching on how I could do it. A lot of background noises became rather distracting. Beautiful work. I wish they could have made it for an everyday person to follow step-by-step going through the process.

Hi Sam, as with most things experience and training reduce the risk. Most of the risks involve poor choice of materials or insufficient knowledge of archival framing techniques when it comes to protecting signed memorabilia. A good place to start is with a basic frame making course like easyhomeframer and then study some of the advanced techniques. Qualified framers use tested methods that preserve items so the least risk is choosing a reliable framer but if you desire to learn you will succeed

i thought you shouldnt use windex on uv glass? btw the space between glass and fabric look adequate to me. but it is hard to tell in the vid. things i have read in pfm magazine suggest 1/4" to 1/2 inch as adequate.

Beautiful job, but as someone looking for information it was useless. It would have been nice to explain just what you were doing, what you were using, why you were doing it that way, etc... Remember, there are people out there (like myself) who are complete morons when it comes to framing a jersey. Always assume your audience are idiots; too much information is much better than too little information.

Sure I can understand where you are coming from but this was a live job and we've done a lot more specific training videos on how to frame jerseys for members of the framer's club. You can be assured if I'm training you to do something I'm a lot more specific than when we a giving an overview. If you need specific advice please contact me for extra help or if you need guided advice and want to access the full framing archive where every aspect of a multitude of framing projects is covered in detail there are a few options like the training here---> go.masterframeracademy.com/how-to-frame-jerseys ...or for people who want to learn all aspects of picture framing then the framer's club archive provides video training, additional details and demonstrations of many framing projects. 1st that was a soccer shirt. That is not a jersey. A jersey is a heavy duty shirt worn in physical sports. Baseball barely meets this criteria. 2nd why would anyone want to put a soccer shirt on their wall. What's next a bowling shirt or maybe a darts shirt.
@Endurart
@Endurart 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it was an Australia Rugby League jersey. Many people frame all types of sports memorabilia usually for three reasons. 1. The shirt is personally signed by the team or specific player, making it a collectible. 2. They are fans of the sport and the team. 3. They are presenting it to a sponsor as an appreciation of their support.
