Really well explained and presented. The visuals were extremely helpful. I get it...and I am planning a huge shed dormer in a gambriel roof so as to make a living space in the attic. Thank you for taking the time, effort and patience to teach us with such clarity. 💯🇨🇦

Exactly what I needed to know, although my aging faculties required me to rewatch it a couple of times for it to sink in, lol. Thanks!

What other books do you recommend? I worked for a larger company for years but because I was diverse in my skill I was always pulled off the site when framing out the roof/ dormer to do other jobs to bring the company in some quick money while they were tied up on the new build. I have my own construction business now but I stay away from new construction because of my lack of knowledge with framing up roofs and dormers. I'm going to purchase a copy of the roof cutters secrets asap.

What's your trick to remembering when you multiply and when to divide by the r/r ratio?

Thanks for the video man I’ve never seen it broken down and explained this way it really helped me understand the calculations better. I gotta question though probably a super simple question but how would you determine the height of the dormer from the main roof? Is that already determined upon the height of the inside room?
@Redoakcarpentry
@Redoakcarpentry Жыл бұрын
You take the wall height plus the shed roof heel height and subtract the rise of the main roof, which should be based on how far in the dormer is backset. So if your dormer is 24” backset from the exterior wall, you’d figure out the rise based on that pitch. For example An 8/12 pitch will rise 18” before it hits the dormer wall. ( Dormer wall + heel height) - ( main roof rise (based on the backset) + main roof heel height.). = height of dormer roof above main roof.

Great video....I have a question? If you are building a shed roof onto an existing 10/12 pitch roof, what is the angle of cut on the 4/12 pitch rafter that sits on the 10/12 pitch roof? I can figure the run of the rafter bit am not sure on the long cut of the 4/12 rafter cut that sits on the 10/12 pitch roof. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Sure thing! Thanks for the comment. It’s pretty easy actually. Using a speed square, You take the degrees of the main pitch, and subtract the degrees of the lay on pitch. Whatever is left, the degree of your long cut. For example a 10/12 (40°) - 4/12 (19°) would give you a 21° pitch cut. If you like to pivot your speed square for these angles you’ll have to subtract that number from 90°. In other words, on a speed square you would pivot to 69° It’s important to use the degrees and not just subtract the pitches, you can’t say 10/12 - 4/12 = a 6/12 long cut. Doesn’t work like that. Use the degree, and then use your speed square to convert it to pitch if you prefer to use a framing square to cut rafters, as most do. Here’s another example. 12/12 main with a 5/12 shed will create a long 5/12 pitch cut. Because 45°-22.5° = 22.5°, which is a 5/12. Note that if you subtracted the pitches 12/12 - 5/12 = 7/12, which would be wrong. So don’t make that mistake. Helps to draw it out on plywood once and you’ll really get a feel for how it works. Let me know if I’ve confused you at all.

Yeah, not actually a practical hands on "how to" frame one. More like shed dormer theory 101
@Redoakcarpentry
@Redoakcarpentry Жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is more like you know how to frame walls and cut rafters already. If you don’t have general framing knowledge you probably shouldn’t be building shed dormers or doing roof carpentry anyway. Or at least, you’ll struggle with fundamental carpentry/framing things and that requires more than I could share in a video.
