I frame my entire 10 x 16 shed in this video, including my loft and the barn style roof. I did this entire framing project super cheap, saving money on all the lumber by buying cull wood and using free wood from Facebook marketplace for everything I didn't need to buy new. I share how I framed my windows, door and how I got the building plumb and square.
*Disclaimer: I'm not a professional, just a seasoned DIYer. You should double check my measurements and advice and adhere to your local building codes.

Your 2x6 floor joists for your loft are being supported only by the screws in the studs. I suggest vertical jack studs on each stud to support each joist. This will transfer the needed support from the floor to the joists and reduce the risk of total collapse.

To maintain square on the walls, adding 2 sheets of your exterior wall sheathing they would go up square and stay square thru the entire build process. Even easier is to sheath the entire wall before standing it up. That way you do not have to try to hold up a 4' x 8' sheet plumb while trying to nail it up.

Should leave bottom plate full length. Cut out doorway once you have it up

Simpson Strong Tie makes a bracket called the "Header Hanger" it is useful in situations where there is simply not enough room for the lumber due to other obstructions or a mistake. Would be easier to just add another king stud on the outside and add the brackets. Just something to keep in mind for future projects.

Stumbled on to eleven gambrel rafters 11 foot 3.5 inch span. Not sure why the 11 foot but whatever. Were cheap. Intend to create a step/block/gusset to adapt to my 10 foot shed. Possibly add ribs on outside of walls to add support. Here in eastern NC, don't get much snow, wind is more of a concern. Start bending nails next month. Waited till it got HOT!

Forgot to mention, will be adding 10 foot to length of shed. So eleven rafters should be perfect.

Also you should've kept the cripples below the sill and above the header 16" on center for sheeting.

Very nice work, good move making the ceiling high. You can always use additional storage space 👍🏽

Hope he lives in a place where he does not require a building permit - anything over 8 feet in many many counties in the many many states require you to get a building permit and follow the set back rules and other building requirements - size too over 256sqft.

I'd suggest putting down some concrete footings and tying in the floor. Strong winds are very powerful...

I might change my rafter plans and use 2x6 lower legs so can have that style overhang. I mean it's probably not that hard to add an overhang but do like your method. Also like the loft floor being level with top plate. Don't plan to have anything very heavy up there.

It would be nice if you would explain some of the terminology you use when making and installing the walls, trusses. I like your videos, I just need to be able to understand. Thanks and keep up the good work.

I love how the camera shudders every time you drive a nail. It's a very cool dramatic effect. Only thing missing was some music.

Good video! Great tips and advice i'll definitely look into. Not a professional myslef, but unless i missed something; is your loft being held up exclusively by nails? I feel like the same reasoning of wanting the jackstuds in your window rough openings would be a reason to have your floor on top of the walls, rather than slung underneath....

Thanks for the comment. This is one thing I wasn't too happy about. In the end it's very strong since I actually added framing screws and nails from the joists into the wall studs and the horizontal support into the wall studs, but it would have been better to mount the joists on jack studs at least in four corners. Good comment.

Hello! I just stumbled upon your videos! And in case you are wondering… my daughter uses my KZbin account so that explains the name and picture! 😂😂😂 any hoo… about your windows when you framed them without the cripples… I think if you put a couple structural screws in each side that would have been plenty strong to support that header and could have saved you a couple hours of work. Just my opinion though. You do nice work!

I had a framer with around 40 years experience tell me the easiest way to frame a window is to build a box the dimensions you need for the window. then add the king studs to each side, cripples below, header above.

oops, noobie mistake , good points on the sloping of sills good advise. i get your height issue BUT, i have never heard of the work around you did. i doubt if you got inspected they would make you rear it out. the 2x cripple you put in is the only thing that makes it kinda kosher. normal 2 story builds all place the underlayment on top[ of the upper plates of the lower wall in all construction. unless you placed a truss/cleat along the one wall the obs along that wall line is going to be moving all over the place. the nailing of the walls 3 nails per stud in the framing is code and the top plates are way under nailed. i get your not getting an inspection and where your at they don't inspect or care but your previous statements of you overbuilding this over a storage shed is not correct.maybe one of those kit build sheds but most of the home built diy sheds shops i have been a pert of are at least buit to the level of your studia. your doublings up the obs to meet the top plate makes for a stout 1.5" floor. you structurally gluing the two layers and joists will stop the squeaking if you screw down the flooring nailing not so much as the nails will work loose in short order . obs floors deck screwed and glued don't squeak. with that floor upstairs, if those walls are not plumb/square there is zero way to change how it is . the hurricane ties there are specific nails to be used with them. screws are not the right way to go unless they have changed the codes. deck screws are hardened and will snap under loading where the nails will not. that is not the right application for deck screws in any roof tie town bracket experiencing shear, i know people do it all the time, does not make it right and why they have inspections on most building to stop it happening. again great series enjoy following along.

strong ties in many many many states is required by the building code - so strong winds do not take off the roof - so, even if it was not required a GOOD BUILDER will always add them. a $40 expense.

Why 86 1/2 and not 91 1/2 wall height?
@EveryotherKarl
@EveryotherKarl 11 ай бұрын
Good question. 91 1/2 would be standard, but I actually got most of my 2x4s for free from the countertop company shipping frames and they were pre-cut slightly, so I made them a standard 86 1/2. I was also happy to make my overall structure slightly lower.
