This person experienced severe depression that took me too a place where suicide seemed the only option, discovering the knowing awareness that never leaves, showed me the falseness of the stat of depression which comes and goes. To recognise this knowing that is in each of us sets us free in each moment.

it seems so much easier to get lost in the movie, in the story, when it's really exciting and wonderful, so it's nice to have some of those dark screen moments, to remind ourselves not to identify too much with this movie, not to take everything so seriously, and that the happiness, the peace of mind that you're looking for, is already here🩵

i also have recurrent episodes of clinical depression. hardly bearable anxiety and suicidal self-hatred. i am also aware of rupert's and other's non-dual teachings. they have not made my depressions go away. i am curious how the person who asked this question about his predicament is doing and whether he has succeeded warding off further episodes of depression just by 'knowing' that he is depressed? so pls speak up! thank you in advance.

That was fantastic. Wow. That said, Rupert did make a strategic mistake here: 6:43 . That’s actually a teaching: “What if this or that will be there for the rest of your life?” Ive heard masters use it. The investigation is best when it is really about a discovery not another goal. An ulterior motive to make it go away makes the examination a bit less effective. Ive even heard in later years Rupert say just that. Not that I could have done even close to nearly as well as he does here; Im just saying that is an important notion. Accepting. Accepting is even more effective when it isn’t accepting in order to change it. “Whatever’s in the way IS the way.” And I agree it will change, as a side effect. But that as goal waters it down a little. Still superb teaching overall. Gonna save this one.

Rupert is trying hard to give some advice but honestly, this is more harm than good. You don't have depression for no reason, depression can overtake your whole being to the point where you don't want to be living anymore. There are difficult chemical processes happening in the brain, or certain processes that should be happening are missing, and this guy gives this joke advice of observing. Depression won't go away by observing. It is like he gives you advice, observe your thirst and don't drink, it will go away. Your body gives you signals for you to solve them, approach them, react in some ways, change your way of living, not to sit there and observe with ignorance. Happiness doesn't come from observing the depression. It is like having cancer and excruciating pain from cancer eating the body and Rupert says, Observe the pain, peace and harmony comes from it, NO IT DOESN'T. Some people need morphine in high dosage to be able to even be conscious and to be able to tolerate pain. We are not humans for no reason, signals in our body are not happening for no reason. We need to react to signals and change something if possible. This spiritual nonsense can be actually very harmful if people listen to it. Your depression will not go away by you observing it as awareness. You need to do action or actions to get rid of depression, you need to change chemical distribution in your brain in some ways. Chemicals in our body are affecting in real life how do we feel in that particular moment. Spiritual brainwashing from a person with a soothing voice can help sometimes for 3 minutes but won't help with serious problems as depression. Happiness doesn't come from observing depression, that's utter nonsense.

Hey Tome. Coming from someone who has been diagnosed with depression, anxiety and adhd. I’d have to disagree partly. Yes it is a chemical imbalance. It’s more about accepting depression and seeing it from a different angle. It’s hard to explain. But once you start meditating for a while you’ll see what I mean. Let me know if you’d like me to explain further. Cheers

Tome Rodrigo.....i agree with you, The depression can be telling us we need to change something in our lives...it's basically an inner alarm bell!!......Might need to eat better foods, exercise, stop drinking or smoking, Discipline sexual instincts etc, etc..... Observing may help to some degree but if other issues aren't addressed, than Depression ain't going nowhere.......it's not even a Half truth from rupert, merely a part truth.
@Kate-md7od Жыл бұрын
Agree with these comments, observing depression with loving awareness does not help. Depression affects every aspect of living, to the extent where basic needs are not met, eg making a meal, cleanliness, going outside, etc., are impossible. Add guilt and feelings of failure and it becomes impossible to manage. This is why some people become desperate and no amount of knowing or awareness can help.

@sonkeschmidt20275 жыл бұрын
It doesn't mean anything it simply is. To search for meaning is an attempt to compare it. But there is nothing to compare it to, because it is limitless, boundless, uncontaminated. To compare something you have to put it in a box. But that "screen" is where everything that could be compared is happening in. So there is no word for it but equally no word needed because you cannot miss it or not experience it.

Many people seems to understand. But really, what exactly you "do", when you do it right? What is the "stay as awareness" method exactly "doing" in you. Because.. if you are aware, if you are staying aware.. who does it? Are you the screen in that moment? Because who is aware, that you are aware, of you "staying as the screen"? Only the screen is aware of your awareness. So I am puzzled, what I should "do" to be there, to stay as the screen. Because only I know is the stream of happenings playing before my screen. I am aware of many things.. but I am not sure if this is all? I am still thinking, if awareness of things, even the awareness of me being aware is enough.

Depression is something chemical that happens to the body and makes you feel fearful, powerless, useless, etc. It is not only due to "trying to run away or hiding from it", sorry but it is not that simple. I would recommend heavy exercise and lot of out-door/ Creative activities, in order to burn-out the excessive energy and balance the body and mind back to the equilibrium, only then, rely to philosophy and environmental changes in order to avoid recurrences.

KNOWING IS NOT ENOUGH Knowing of depression (or of any other low vibrated emotion that is manifested in us ) is always there, but the bliss of awareness is not experienced. In order to experience the bliss, the freedom and the plenitude of our true Self (awareness) the mind must be pure, serene and luminous. There is no other way to reflect clearly the bliss of awareness.

wtfellification Do you have an example? I’m not sure you really understand what I wanted to express, yet when I read what I wrote I find no way to make it clearer. In addition, I think that spiritual leaders should be very careful about making scientific statements. Spira is very good in some things, but curing mental illnesses of the clinical kind is probably not one of them. Contrast this with other teachers, like Sam Harris, who make it explicit that people with serious mental illnesses should consult their doctors first. Spira on the other hand trivializes a whole kind of mental illness, and I would expect this does more harm than good. That was my entire point.
@purUrban5 жыл бұрын
@@Madoc_EU Rupert isn't talking about the clinical aspects of depression, he made it quite clear that he is not in a position to make scientific claims about it. he also explicitly said "I'm not trivialising your feelings".
