I agree frost seeding clover is not necessary, but in established plots I find that overseeding with about 25% the standard seeding rate can really extend the life of the plot by preventing weeds from popping in spots where the clover has thinned. I wait until the ground has begun to thaw as the mud helps keep those little seeds from running off or blowing away.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
It won't help in covering up weeds (they always beat any seed to the sun 😉) but over-seeding definitely helps fill in light spots from lower seeding rates the Fall before!

Jeff we are a little crusty at our age!! Lol!!!!! Another great informational video. Have to wait a bit for frost seeding this year 13.8" of snow yesterday! I hate mother nature some times!!!! Have a great day.

Yahoo! I’m just missing the pheasant….. it’s exciting to plan your work and work your plan. First things first I will be getting a soil test.. I don’t think I’ll see dirt until June the way it’s looking in my field 😢😅😂

We do have Pheasant, there’s been several roosters a mile or so away for years! (Right near ag land) They’ve been strutting around for a few weeks now. Stunning video Dylan shot with slow motion. Thank you Jesus!

I have some small pockets of reed canary grass that I wish to replace with an appropriate pollinator. Could you provide a how to video on seeding pollinators that require seed stratification?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
Hi Joe! I do not, only because I don't use them? Also that's really tough in reed canary grass, just because they soak up so much water in those low lying areas. Often the water over takes and floods/kills plantings within reed canary grass areas

Can you just seed your clover into your spring rye as your cover crop or do you have to kill the rye and add oats for your cover crop?

I have a fallow field I want in switch in Michigan. Can I till it now, spray simozine, wait four weeks, spray with gly, then plant switch with a broadcaster or wait until next year and a summer of weed control? There's a thick layer of thatch right now.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
On most ground in MI you can still broadcast soft seed for nearly 8 weeks and do very well! I would rarely till...I would bet your thatch later isn't too bad, meaning 1 kick and you can see the soil. It will deteriorate rapidly over the next 2 months with spraying alone. I would lean more towards hitting with Simazine, then 2 sprayings of 2-4D and Gly, 4 to 5 weeks apart. Then wait 7 days and broadcast your switch. They are very tiny seeds and work into the ground well through most layers of thatch.

Jeff, I have some 2nd and 3rd year switchgrass that is laid flat from heavy snow since mid December. Do I need to mow it this spring or will the new growth poke through?

Hi Salty...it will pop right back up and you absolutely don't have to mow

Jeff, do you install bee hives on your property for pollination? I contacted an local apiary a few years back and they love setting up their hives on my place. It's a win/win free honey for life! I have seen a real benefit in terms of flowering forbs I didn't previously see and better apple production. It's a bit dangerous though seeding into buckwheat in the afternoon with thousands of them all around .

Would you plant clover on the trails that connect your food plots in order to direct deer movement or just leave those trails natural?
@clintbrubaker4344
@clintbrubaker4344 Жыл бұрын
You could plant a pollinator blend or perhaps rye grass but clover will only serve to keep the deer back on your trails till dark instead of out into your food plots.
@MrRABland
@MrRABland Жыл бұрын
@@clintbrubaker4344 Once frost hits, the clover will die and the food plots become the primary source of food here in NW Wisconsin. Having the clover before then attracts the deer and puts them on a path to the plots in the future when the brassicas and cereal grains become abundant.

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
Hi Shawn! 13 to 14 acres of switchgrass already planted...over 3 miles worth. Acres of pollinator, 2 miles of edge habitat and Regen turkey nesting and pheasant cover. Not specifically for pheasant...but all incredible pheasant cover. Blend of turkey, rabbit and pheasant...more leaning towards pheasant. There are no quality pheasant patch specific plantings out there as they all fail in holding cover for the Winter months...

It just needs to be thrown on the ground...does not need to be stratified. At all. Likely the easiest of all seeds to germinate...
