I'm just transitioning from Logic Pro X to Luna and was wondering how gain staging works in Luna with summing. Thanks for showing us how it works!

Hello from Europe! I've subscribed to your channel. Nice tutorial. In addition you remind me of Jay Z or his relative. Greetz!

@@MusicByDarcy Surely it is not offensive.. lol, On the other hand, a huge thing it would be a comparison to my heroes like Miles Davis or John Coltrane. I wish you "cash" like Jay Z and music like "Kind of Blue". Respect to you!

Appreciate that, as I learn more I will share more. Don’t work for UAD so don’t have all the answers to how the plugins are built but it’s something actively learning and testing right now and hopefully can make a good video on in the future. I have to know something to a pretty good level of depth before I can explain it simply.

@@mitchstallings5474 I generally aim everything for 0 through the tapes and summing but listen incase something doesn’t sound right to me. Faders will aim for what’s appropriate, my max fader usually sits below -9 these days as I keep thing quiet as I find things get much when summed in the main through my tape setup. Watch that other video I linked in your other comment thread to see what I mean.

@@MusicByDarcy I think u r spot on Darcy....If 0DBVU=-18DBFS, then the output meters on the tape and summing can show us if we r in the ballpark!

hey Darcy....are u saying that we push the gain into oxide to hit 0....is this like the neutral spot? I have heard that we go -18DBFS?? a little confused....I do notice that if I push the tape to 0 and then adjust saturation, I hear the difference....with -18DBFS I can turn up saturation all the way yet hear no diff?? many thanks mitch

This is something I've actually studying more recently and trying to my head around more in-depth knowledge on. However, I'll provide some information that may not be obvious. When looking at the Tape Saturation and summing, the meter is no DB based, its VU. Meaning that 0 on the tape is not 0 on your fader. A simplistic way of explaining this is that the 0 db metering of a fader is the level before it clips and digitally distorts. VU meters are measuring the intensity of the sound. More important than knowing all the numbers is using your ears. If you're not being anything when the sound passes through, it's likely because it's not going into the tape loud enough. Watch my recent video from this week where you can see my gain stage in real-time doing an actual mix. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZDdl4uMZ5iFoc0

@@MusicByDarcy Thanks for quick response Darcy. The VU meter shows output...there really is nothing that shows what input is. Ive read on YAD blog that -18DBFS is sweet spot for most UAD plugins, but -12DBFS is sweet spot for ampex?? Obviously, The VU meter on oxide really doesn't tell me anything..lol The answers Ive received from UAD have been vague...If Oxide auto adjust its own input and output, pushing to -12DBFS might be the best starting point...maybe what Im hearing is very subtle at -18dbfs...sorry for long message...just trying to understand many thanks!!

@@mitchstallings5474 you can read more on these plugins via their UAD manual for the normal plugin and the extensions are the same thing, with simpler controls for the most part but the rules will be the same. media.uaudio.com/support/liverack/UAD_Plug-Ins_Manual-v942-171110.pdf
