Agapanthus (African Lillies) provide a wonderful edge to gardens and a beautiful display of flowers each year, but with suitable care, you will get even more out of them.
During this video, Steve demonstrates annual pruning of your agapanthus and seed collection for propagation.

Hello. My friend has recently dug out all her agapanthus and there are multiple pieces of root left in the soil. Can these regrow?

Great video sir I picked one up the other day and planted it. It's a young plant and when the stalks broke off I guess from the dog or something. Can I just take that stalk in the ground and will it reblooming? Thank you Hector from Texas close to Houston

Thank you for this question. If you mean the flower stalk, unfortunately this will not grow. But if the leaves of the plant have been removed from the soil and there are some roots still attached, there is a good chance it will survive. Hope this is helpful :)

Great video and explanation. I grew up with Agapanthuses in my home in Southern California - where they were outside year-round. Now that I live in Alabama, I miss having them as they aren’t winter hardy (zone 7b). Any suggestions for over-wintering the agapanthus plants outdoors?

I live in Canada, in Zone 5. There are now varieties that hardy for colder zones. However, I have successfully grown them in large pots for years. I just start to cut back on watering once the leaves start to turn brown, then bring them into a slightly heated (above freezing) garage over the winter. In spring, I remove the dead leaves and slowly start watering again. I bring the pots out during day if warmer, gradually leaving them overnight as the weather warms up. Good luck!

@@monah5532 thank you for the information. Will definitely look for the hardy plants. But now, with your guidance, I’m not afraid to get the non-hardy variety. 👍

@@sl5311 Just saw your post. This year, for the first time, my blooms were also abysmal. Not sure if it was because I over-fertilized, we had a weird wet and soggy spring, sun and last year I may have let them dry out one too many times. The latter can also affect bud production. Fingers crossed that all the strong foliage means good blooms next year. Good luck with yours as well. Let's post our results here next year :)

Hi Steve, do you also remove the dead leaves at the bottom of the plant?
@iCultivate1
@iCultivate1 6 ай бұрын
I do, but mainly so that the plant looks better. It would also minimise the risk of fungal diseases etc. Hope this helps 😊

Cheers Steve. I have a row of about 12 of these, but only one is a decent size and has flowered, while the rest are quite small, never really got off the ground. They have enough water and mostly green. Any suggestions? Thanks

Sorry about my slow reply. Sounds like a strange situation. Assuming there is uniform water and sun across them all, perhaps some Nitrogen based fertiliser might give them a bit of a move along. The other consideration is: are they all the same variety. Some varieties are actually quite small.

Can you cut off the seed heads while still green & let them dry out to get the seeds?
@iCultivate1
@iCultivate1 Жыл бұрын
If the my are green, it is likely the seeds will not be mature. It is best to let them mature first . Hope this helps 😊

My agapanthus are rotting in the ground! First noticed the leaves turning yellow, then checked the plant to find it was rotten at the base. What can I do please. Happens this time last year and sipped out a lot of plants. But seems to have returned again. All the plants are flowering, though then the rot sets in and halts them from blooming 😢
@iCultivate1
@iCultivate1 6 ай бұрын
Sounds like root rot which unfortunately can not be fixed for the specific plant. This can be caused by too much water or a fungal disease. The only thing you can do is to remove the plant, carefully and completely to minimise the risk of it infecting other plants - if the reason is a fungal disease. If the cause is too much water, you still should remove the whole plant - sadly it is unlikely that it can be saved, so focus on the healthy plants with the unhealthy ones gone. Hope this helps.

The first thing that comes to mind is ........... over the last couple of years, have they become quite dense in their growth? Agapanthus does need to be thinned out every 2 to 3 years in order to keep them flowering well. Hope this helps :)

Absolutely, this applies to all plants - please grow responsibly. As mentioned in the video agapanthus can be invasive and if grown, gardeners must consider how theor agapanthuz are managed. Thanks for your comment 😊

Another possibility is that they need thinning out - has the clump become too thick and overgrown?
