CFYA.... great episode from the Master Instructor. It's not what or how much you know. It's about how one presents the knowledge.

I am enjoying all of your videos. I have 2 lower end boats that need some work. Both need bow decks replaced and one needs the transom and small live well replaced. Being that I am now 71 years old and in poor health as well as physical health I fear that I've waited too long to try to do what needs to be done. But I am enjoying sitting here watching your videos and dreaming of doing it. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. And happy new year to you and yours!

This is just what I wanted to see . When would you use polystyrene vs the clear orca additive? Also what is the minimum size compressor thst you need to run the gel coater gun your showing.. I have a small pancake compressor on the boat to run the air horns but I think that is too small

Excellent video Joe as usual, thanks! Is there a rule of thumb for sanding after roll and tipping gelcoat to get a glossy smooth finish? Would you start with 400, 600, or just use some rubbing compound?
@FishBumpTV15 күн бұрын
Thanks! Sometimes, I will shart with 220, then 400, 600, 800, 1200, then buff and polish, but you can try 400 first, and see how it goes for you. Just remember that if you are going to try and wet sand ,and polish to a shine, you will need to apply 4 or 5 coats of gelcoat, instead of the 2 or 3 coats that may be needed for just basic coverage. I did a 3 part gelcoat series on spraying, then wetsanding, and polishing gelcoat a few months ago that I'm sure you will find helpful, if polishing to a shine is what you are interested in doing. I hope this helps, and I appreciate you watching!

Another great video. My last boat was a sailing 44 foot. I took all gel coat from the hull, and just used paint (several coats). I was very happy with the results. And that's my question: Paint vs Gel Coat?
@FishBumpTV13 күн бұрын
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the videos! There are pros and cons to paint vs gelcoat. Maybe I will touch on that in a future episode.

Do you think a textured roller could create a semi non skid deck surface without the need for non skid media? I think it might be closer to a traditional diamond non skid vs the sprinkled media...
@FishBumpTV15 күн бұрын
A rolled surface will definitely be better than sprayed or brushed gelcoat for adding texture to a surface, but I still personally prefer to add a true non-skid material on critical walking surfaces for safeties sake. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the info! I am wondering about spraying a gelcoat overtop a sun damaged amusement ride seat that is been in the sun for 50 years. We have used just a clear coat to bring baack the luster in some of these parts, but the original color was still present. The pieces that are so ablated of gelcoat are down to the metal flake that was in the gelcoat during production. Any thoughts on how we might revitalize the color?
@FishBumpTV14 күн бұрын
It's hard to say for sure on something like that, as the way it was built might differ quite a bit, from how a boat is built. I would imagine you could clean, then sand the surface with 120 or 220 grit paper. Then spray some fresh gelcoat that has been color matched to the original surface. A little testing and experimenting on your end might be in order, or we do offer consulting through our patreon memberships for people that need more of my time. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
@randycurry14 күн бұрын
@@FishBumpTV Thanks for the reply. I will look into maybe a clear candy colored gelcoat that would still show the flake. If someone makes such a thing. It might be like you said a color matched polyurethane that would work. Again a big thanks for sharing what you do!

Putting new gel coat and webbing on my boat deck. Should I use wax on the deck gel coat before I apply the webbing. I’m thinking spraying pva after I apply the gel coat and webbing so I have more time to apply the webbing gel coat. Great videos What you think?

Joe, if i bought a few quarts of gel coat this past fall for a few touch ups, how long is it good for in my cool basement this winter? Will it still be good come spring/summer when i want to tackle some more blemishes?
@FishBumpTV15 күн бұрын
Most manufacturers say 3 or 4 months of shelf life, but I have seen it last much longer. Especially if it is stored in a cool location. I would do a test batch on something that is non-critical, before using it on your actual repair, just to be sure that it still cures properly. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

So I’ve got a 1991 International Skimmer Skiff. The interior is that speckled/splashed look like Carolina skiffs. I’d like to get it solid white. Would a topside epoxy type paint work or should I be looking at something different? Been binge watching your channel the last few days. Great stuff!

Captain Joe, how do you match the color of the gel coat with the color of the boat? Do you go to the boat manufacture and get color codes? Is marine white just plain marine white or are there different shades?
