What a great video! Finally a video that really explaines every step in stead of the useless videos. I have a darkblue gelcoat from 2004. I want to do the whole hull. I have a tiny chip that is missing from the gelcoat, it is through the gellcoat untill the underlayer. Do you have a tip how I can plaster/repair this spot. Like some blue liquid gellcoat repairpaste? Greetings from the Netherlands

Just subscribed. Picked up a 15ft hightide this week. Needs a good bit of love and care but I'd really like to restore her. Definitely digging the content. Happy I can roll on my gelcoat. Gonna do a full strip and restore on the gelcoat this winter. Has a '98 70hp yamaha 2 stroke. Gonna get it running this weekend. Keep the content rolling. I need all the guidance I can get. This is uncharted waters for me.

Captain Joe, I enjoy watching all of your videos as well as appreciate all of the information you share. I am replacing the floor in a 15 foot boat, that I own, and was interested in the mix you made with the laminating resin and the 406 silica. Is that a mixture I could use to fill the small gaps where the floor meets the inside of the boat?

I keep wondering and this may seem a silly question but it’s been bugging me! How do you stop water from tracking down alongside screws/bolts in fixtures? For example you apply sealant around the base of a cleat for example but then what’s to stop water tracking down the actual screw?

So am I right in understanding that the resin waterproofs the wood, and the glass is for strength? Why then do you glass over the really strong wood parts of the boat? Why not just resin them and call it a day?

Just had to repatch previous damage to the keel of my 1964 Astro glass, added a keel guard to protect it from further damage. Hopefully I’ll get to start my boat in the near future.

Question about the polyester, does it stay sticky after drying, or curing , like sticky where trash sticks to it, very new to this, was thinking of using the kind of polyester resin for a small boat, but confused about the tackiness

Great videos! My new to me boat has some star like spider cracks in a few places just on the surface. Would this be a case of sanding back and then filling? Then reapplying the gel coat to the repair? Thanks

Is there any way we can send pictures of our projects and to show you where we think we have problems, and that way you could give us a wee bit advice, I am in Scotland and I am trying to restore a FairLine Vixen 1979 she is a beauty and I want to do the right thing by her, but being disabled is a pain, my two sons are helping some times as they work and I occasionally get one of my Grandsons to help, thanks Joe would appreciate any advice watch you as much as I get time.

Just did a spot with 2 gouges from the winch post. They were there covered in keel guard when I bought the boat. Years ago I built surfboards do not need to glass but the 2 part gel cost video was spot on and the repair turned out great. Thanks

Need some advice please. I need to correct some of my gelcoat work I did today where I went too long and got clumpy GC boogers in the late rolled floor areas. I want to lightly sand out the boogers and re-roll and re-texture roll but since my finish was in waxed GC I'm not sure what I can do over waxed finish. Can the wax be washed off? Do I have to do a deep sanding and start over? Can a light sanding work? What happens when you go over waxed GC with more waxed GC? Didn't you have some of that when doing your floors as you met the sides which were already waxed. I attempted way too much today. The floors, the liner, the gunnel deck all in one run. I had a guy mixing as I and we were rolling like crazy but it got way out of hand. Was trying to continue with the wet edge but for the whole 27' boat inside. I made several batches that were way too big and the thermals got hot in the pan and killed it. I used you as the inspiration, guide and appreciate ya. Thanks.

80 or 120 grit sandpaper can be used to thoroughly sand the surface of of the area you want to regelcoat. Then a wipedown with acetone. The new gelcoat needs a wax free surface to bond properly. On a boat that big you would usually gelcoat in phases, Gunnel,sides, floor, etc. We have a video of when we gelcoated the interior of our 29, and it was broken down into sections. Important to remember that the warmer the Temps, the faster the gelcoat will cure, so getting a early start before air temps rise can help.You can also reduce catalyst percent down to 1 percent, and mix in one qt batches, which should help. Anyone who has worked with gelcoat for any amount of time will have had situations like this, and it can usually be corrected. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching

Thankyou very much, I've tried tearing smaller widths lately and messed it. Larger pieces (over 150mm /6") seems easier.

@FishBumpTV 2 күн бұрын
Glad it helped! Tearing small widths is more difficult than wide, but it can be done with some practice. If you want a torn edge on one side and straight on the other, you can tear a wide strip and then split it down the middle with a straight edge and a razor blade. Thanks for watching!

I have a really old boat called the rescue ranger because at 7 I would go out on the lake and take broken down boats to their dock. I'm slowly accumulating everything I need and your videos are very helpful. I'm going to start sometime this summer and try to get it on the water next year because I have no idea what I'm doing. I am about to do transom and stringers. I got a 5 gallon of poly resin but it says perfect for marine and auto (above waterline). The guy I got my resin from runs a repair shop and says he uses it but I am hesitant. Is this okay or should I look for a different resin? The one I got is ClearCote General Purpose low profile laminating resin. Product code is 124445 Love the videos! They've helped a lot! Thank you!

I'm so glad to catch your channel Joe! Were trying to get ready to build a hard top for our beast of a sailboat wheelhouse. The overall unit will be 12' x 11', At present it's a hard dodger/windshield joined to a bimini getting old. Were in the Pacific North West. So weather is wet. your use of plywood and polyester priming has helped my wife understand its ok to use. THanks So Much!!! Marc & Paty P.S. your 29 footer looks bullet proof!🤠

Helllo! Me again... I have yet to seen a similar or almost exactly the same instruction video as this one BUT only using polyester and what you can do with different fillers and additives. All channels, including this one just bring up some magic can (which is not available world-wide, or rather, is available but under some other mystifying brand name) with some magic putty or filler. So far I have had some success in mixing polyester with glass balloons and silica. I am not confident enough to start using some fibre material though. Would be really appreciated if you made a video showing how to make different putties and fillers from scratch using polyester as resin. I simply cannot afford epoxy in most cases. Thanks in advance!
