Should you put gesso on the sides of all thicknesses of canvass frames? When doing your painting should you bring the sky, trees, whatever around to the sides of the canvass frame? You are absolutely the best and appreciate your explanations and examples. You are giving me the desire to start painting again.

I just ordered some Bob Ross gray gesso to apply some old paintings so I can use these canvases for new paintings. I chose the gray so I can make sure I don't put on too thick a layer of liquid white. I did that and it was horrible. I really like your videos. Keep them coming.

Ha ha ha yeah we all make that mistake when we start out. I think you would like using Grey gesso, It really helps at the start.
@ilovebunniessparks51213 жыл бұрын
Why was it horrible? Are you not supposed to use gray gesso and then liquid white on top?
@wetcoastclan3 жыл бұрын
@@ilovebunniessparks5121 They are simply saying that too much liquid white makes this style of painting very difficult and, particularly when applying it to an already white canvas, it is difficult to know how much has been applied. Some people can tell by feel (how the brush moves/bends as you apply), but that is hard to judge. Tinting the gesso slightly to give it a gray hue helps you see when the entire canvas is covered when applying the liquid white, since only a very thin coat is needed. Hope this helped!

LW isn't really considered a primer. Its more of a base medium. In short terms, gesso is uses to prep a painting surface. When it drys, it will give a little grit texture for the paint to grab onto and also seal the painting surface (stopping it from acting like a sponge) Hope that makes sense!

Wild: I’ve heard it from different online sources, that although gesso dries to the touch within 15-20 minutes, your supposed to wait anywhere from 2 hours to two days for it to dry completely. Personally, I’ve had good results after 15 minutes but I was curious to see what you thought. Is that just for non-wet in wet painting?
@WildCreates3 жыл бұрын
Hard to answer that questions without knowing the thickness of the layer applied and if normal gesso vs heavy body vs mixed with other mediums. For most people (and wet on wet painters) a thin layer of gesso will dry fairly quickly :) Also go with what is best for you and don't be afraid to test for results.

Do I have to use gesso first on canvas and then liquid white as well ?
@WildCreates4 жыл бұрын
If you are just starting out I would recommenced to gesso your canvas first (let it dry) then add on your layer of Liquid White.

I have seen people making gesso from different stuff like talcum, pva glue, acrylic paint ect. Do you know anything about that? Does it hold Up?
@WildCreates3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have seen people do it and I have made my own once. But to be honest it’s way easier to just buy it. It’s always available and fairly cheap online. Unless you wanna make thick and heavy gesso just buy it 💪
@construxi3 жыл бұрын
@Wild Creates The problem is not the price on the product but the price of the delivery and vat and stuff. Probably just a country thing. I have bought it but I could only find it online and the delivery is like half the price of the product so in the future I just have to bulk up the materials. This time I just found out I needed it after buying all the other stuff

Gesso should be a common item at your local art store. Hopefully you have one near you.

There is no real answer, because it depends on the size of your canvas, how many coats you wanna do, and how dark you want your grey. If you are just starting out you only need a drop or two to any volume of white to make a nice light grey color.

@WildCreates4 жыл бұрын
There are different kinds of gesso (Thick, heavy body, etc) - What kind did you buy? Most normal gessos will dry super quick (Like 10 to 20 mins depending on temp and thickness). Try painting a little on a piece of paper and see what the dry time is.

Can gesso help stop crackling for oil painting? One painting of mine is crackling all over, not sure why one is and my older works are not.
@WildCreates4 жыл бұрын
It can help it give it a better foundation BUT cracking generally is from the paint you used and how you applied it to the canvas. This is most common when you but too much thin paint on-top of thick paint. Thin paint drys way faster then the thick... so this will lead to cracking over time. I hope that helps

I assumed that I could never paint. ,because I can’t draw . So I tried acrylic and I did good . However I really wanted to do oils , but my lungs are prone to pneumonia. But this Christmas list ,we don’t have much $ , I’ve asked for Gesso,and brushes. I wish I knew someone that was throwing stuff out,I’d pay for used stuff,I lost everything I ever worked for , it’s been really hard . But it’s going to take a long time to get all these supplies. If anyone out there is going to throw anything out , I’d gladly pay whatever I could.

Question: If you buy "Triple Primed" Canvases, do you still need to put on Gesso? What is the use of triple primed canvases?
@WildCreates5 жыл бұрын
Normally NO - IT should be enough! But give it a feel with your fingers and see it if feels like a good coat. Sometimes the coverage isnt that good in some batches. Can also differ on the brand you buy.... If you buy too cheap, the coverage and be wonky.

@@WildCreates Thanks for the fast reply. I am completely new to this and my first attempts were not so good. I applied the liquid white to a canvas I got from Walmart. If I use liquid clear as a medium then what do I use to thin paint since liquid clear and thinner are so volatile?
@WildCreates Жыл бұрын
Smart question, you can use a little thinner if you are in a pinch (the reaction wont show in great detail unless you use a good amount ). But you can always things like more LC, linseed oil, walnut oil, solvent free gel, ETC.

I am painting for the first time on MDF. I applied a sealant and then 2 thin layers of gesso, it was super thick so i thinned it with water. The problem is i can scratch it with my nails, shouldnt it stick well? Wouldnt my paint come off easily after painting? Or this is the way it is? I intend to do two more layers of gesso and use oil paints. Please advise.
@WildCreates4 жыл бұрын
My guess would be that your sealant wont all the gesso to bond to it Soooooo Don't do the sealant! Just gesso the MDF, the gesso is like liquid plastic so it will seal the MDF for ya. Then you can paint on top of it, When your painting is all done and dry you can varnish it for your seal and protective coat. Hope that helps :)

I'm so confused, I bought triple primed prw stretched canvas doni just apply liquid white or do I gave to apply grey gesso
@WildCreates3 жыл бұрын
You can if they are high enough quality canvases. However, many manufactures will double or triple prime their canvases but the coatings they put on are super thin and sparse. You will see this even more on cheaper canvases. Which is way I recommend adding gesso. Hope that makes sense for ya :)
@Jkeys-ov1mw3 жыл бұрын
@@WildCreates thank you I checked and the canvases appear to be pretty good quality and the reviews say no need for gesso

Ryan, Thank you so much for your reply on your other channel. I should of mentioned that I am only using acrylic paint not oil paint, plus the work is mainly abstract, therefore was deciding on whether to apply a thin layer of gesso. As the Windsor & Newton canvas comes primed, but I'll get to small canvasses and gesso one leave other without to see if it makes much difference to what I'm trying to achieve. Thank you for letting me know if was a foam roller that I need in this video, as it just confirmed my choice. One last question, could I just add a different colour of acrylic paint to achieve a different based colour gesso? Everyone if you haven't seen the video on applying black gesso, please go check it out! Regards, Rahul Sharma.

If you get a canvas which has been double or triple primed, do you need Gesso?
@WildCreates3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the canvas. If its a cheap double/triple canvas you will most likely have to add another coat of gesso. Since cheap canvases can have a sparse coating on it. More expensive canvas you will be OK.

I am new to Gesso. I do dot painting on rocks, clay pots, wine bottles, and greeting cards. I was told to use Gesso if my paint is too thin. Is that accurate info? Does it serve as a thickener?
@WildCreates4 жыл бұрын
I am sure some gessos out there may add a thinning or thicking effect to them BUT it wouldn't be my go to. Much better to buy paint that fit your needs (aka buy thick or thinner paint, which they sell). If you already have paint and don't want to buy any more. They make mediums that will thin or thicken paint. Get those and add it to your paint as needed and you will be good to go 💪 I hope that helps

How many canvases I can prime averagely with a 250ml gesso bottle ? Considering 2 layer each
@WildCreates4 жыл бұрын
Really hard to answer that cause of the different sizes, plus canvases can have different surfaces on them ( making them soak up more of the gesso) But a bottle can last you a good amount of time depending on how smooth you want your surface to be.
@CapitanTavish4 жыл бұрын
Wild Creates Basically you didn’t answer thx
@WildCreates4 жыл бұрын
Sorry - Can't give an answer that has too many personal variables... To get your answer, spend $8 to $12 bucks and buy a bottle. Coat a canvas the way you like and see how much you used. Then you will know how many you can get out of any bottle you buy... Boom Easy.
