Should you do these same steps for acrylic painting or not. I’m having a problem where when my colors go on the canvas they won’t spread or blend but I didn’t add any liquid white or gesso.

Thats because acrylic dries so quick. Either work in smaller sections to blend or intro duce a medium to make them flow. You can see a few in this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHqYdWB-eJyYa9E

This is better than I've hoped for, so I have subscribed. I'll also stretch my pension to pay for follow-on videos, only it would help to have a list of which & in what order, to progress to the point of making a better start & effort than I've managed up to now.

Great tips Wild! You mentioned safety, that's really first and foremost. Just a couple of things I would add to that. Don't just throw your paper towels away that have thinners, mediums and paints on them. Lay them out allow them to dry on a hard, preferably non flammable surface for a few days, or soak them in water in something like a coffee can before tossing them. Petroleum based products like thinners and oil based products like linseed oils give off heat as they dry. This can lead to spontaneous combustion... No bueno! If at all possible, keep your Bob buckets of thinners, beating racks etc.. outside or in a garage if possible. Keep them sealed when not using them. A small sealable brush washer with thinners nearby is fine. Just try to limit your exposure to the VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Yes, even "odorless" thinners give off major VOCs. VOCs are bad... mmmkay! Gesso on inexpensive canvases.. I can't agree more or stress this enough. Even on higher quality canvases, another coat of gesso ain't gonna hurt. Besides, it gives you time to prep for painting. If you're looking for alternatives to Bob Ross products, look at the Gamblin 1980 line or the Winton by Winsor & Newton line. Follow Wild's tutorial ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWeshJVjrbd2jNU ) on making your own liquid/magic white. Linseed oil and titanium white will do the trick. A good quality canvas that won't break the bank is The Edge 11/16" can be bought at Jerry's Artarama on sale for @ $38 for a box of 6 16x20 or @$50 for a box 6 18x24. For what it's worth, they go on sale for about a week about every 4-6 weeks.

It depends on the manufacture of the canvas. A lot of canvas makes will use cheap gesso and sparsely apply it to the canvas. Run your fingers across it and hold it up to the light. If you see of feel any patches, apply gesso. If you don't you should be good to go. I hope that helps you out.

Its a good question but hard to answer. You basically have to learn how different manufactures of canvas coat their canvases... Some are good coats and some are very sparse. A canvas that is triple coated may be worse if it has a crappy sparse coating on it - while another another canvas with a single coat that is high quality evenly coated can work fantastic. I recommend Gesso because you are in control of the quality of the coating basically - I hope that makes sense.

I just got the Bob Ross base coat value pack and I usually wipe off my Palette knife on a paper towel. That might be horrible I don’t know it works for me though. Anyway on this box the back of it says it’s contents and right after it says “Materials such as paper and rags with this product may spontaneously ignite. Immediately after use, place waste and water until disposal with a accordance of local regulations.” So am I good to continue to use paper towels or a cotton towel even, as long as I wet it afterwards??? Have you ever had something spontaneously ignite using these products?? Also- Off topic. Can you do a video working with a fan brush? Particularly for trees? I am the worst at trees and have no idea what I’m doing wrong. Thanks

I will make a video on this at some point BUT - Most liquid mediums are flammable/ can combust. However I have been painting for a number of years using rags and paper towels and never has this happened. It takes the right amount of factors to trigger it. Just make sure to paint with caution and be smart. If you use mediums and towels, spray it with water and dispose of it in a metal can. You will be good with that I will see what I can do for you on an upcoming tree video. Until then I have 2 tree videos that may help you out: - Painting Tree: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYq6emZ4dtpgbM0 - Lonely Tree: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZ7HqpudZ51mprc

Ok I am confused here. You said put gesso on your canvas before painting and I watched Bob ross on one of his tutorials say that liquid white is different than using gesso and he doesn't recommend using it.
@WildCreates
@WildCreates 2 жыл бұрын
They are different - I have a few videos that go over this subject more in-depth and give examples ( which I will attach below ).BUT basically gesso helps seal your canvas and gives your paint something to grab, while LW is a base medium that allows your colors to blend naturally on the canvas: Common Mistakes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2LSZ3ibfrV8ibc Know your gessos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3KxnaqOfK6cras Dull paintings: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3_LeoSJlqp2m6s

Gotcha - I have were you can become a YT Member here on YT ( which I see you are ). At the moment I have basic tiers which basically grant you access to BTS, 1st to see new content and 1st for when I do live stream reviews on viewer submitted art ( which may interest you ) I have thought about doing private lessons or adding a new higher tier for 1 on 1 time... Just not sure if people would be interested in that just yet.

Regarding safety, should have added that it not a good idea to eat in your studio. Munching on cookies or chips with paint on your fingers is just asking for cancer (and it ruins to flavor of the food).
