Handy Plumbing Tip - Faucet nuts are almost always rusty, 99 percent of the time if you hit them with your impact and a faucet-specific tool, or just a deep socket you're done in seconds, if not horizontal rotary tool and just cut them. Saves tons of time on a widespread.

Okay, explain something to me. I get your labor rate, but you did not account for the new faucet & materials for this example. You need to include the cost of materials in your example. You have to purchase the new faucet and materials, you have drive somewhere to buy it, place it on your credit card (fees?). You need to charge the client for this service as well. In the Northeast, it's going to cost the client a min. $300.00 to get a plumber on site to replace the friggin faucet, then the clock starts ticking. I've seen bills for $350.00 to $600.00 to replace a kitchen faucet and new water lines from these plumbers. Suggestion: do your research find out what area plumbers are charging for most common residential repairs. You can still undercut what the plumbers are charging and still be a hero and make a good profit margin

I’m having a hard time getting an idea of what the local competitors are charging for the same kind of work to get a starting point for the estimate

150 is my minimum labor rate so it’s funny that you came up with that because that is usually what I charge for a faucet unless it’s a hard one that is corroded on it has to be cut off. That’s probably was not the best example to use as a how to estimating guide just because most people know what they’re charging for a faucet before that phone even picks up. Also, most of my jobs are bid I do figure out what I made on the hourly, but how do you figure out your billable hours if you’re not doing clients in hours doing them in flat rates? My experience has been. I cannot charge somebody $90 an hour or cannot say I’m charging 90 an hour but if I bid that they don’t care. When I was charging by the hour I had to for certain locations charge for drive time people get very bent out of shape about this, but yet you give that same person a bid for the total project get half down, and they could care less. It could be just how I’m doing it but in my 10 years of experience I have only had success with billing by the hour when I’m $50 an hour or less. I try to differentiate myself with a much higher standard and quality via shirts that are embroidered matching hat presentation ect. But one thing I have found is that there are lots of people around here that work much cheaper I am not gonna give up all my details on how I succeeded, but I found by specializing in basically not marketing myself as a handyman I was able to charge more.

Thanks for sharing this information with the world. I'm about to start as a handyman, and I am old fashioned in the sense that technology is hard for me to make sense of. I know that there are apps not to schedule appointments, to manage time at a job, to control gas per jobs, to manage your books, etc. It all is unknown to me but I have to learn all that and pay for such services if I want to be organized and diligent about my new career. Thanks, again.

That’s exciting that you’re starting! You’re right, utilizing technology makes a big difference in terms of productivity and takes the burden off you for admin type tasks. You’ll also look for professional. Good to hear that you recognize that and are willing to learn! Good luck in your business and let me know if you need recommendations for software or anything I can help you with in getting started!

@@TheHandyManual thanks for your message. I do need to know about software or apps. I figure that a website is a must, so clients can get directed there when they find me on Google or Facebook. I'd like them to make a work request on the website to avoid receiving phone calls. That way I can call them after reading about their needs. So I'll need a booking or scheduling service. Also, what do you do for payments and receipts? I'll need that as well. I use hurdlr for mileage already.
