My husband uses ether to get old motorcycles firing after they've sat for years. He buys them, fixes and flips them. Good video tip!

Every 6.9 & 7.3 truck manual I've seen says not to use ether, as do both of my 6.2 detroit diesels in my chevy trucks. My understanding is you shouldn't use it in an engine with functioning glow plugs. I followed this rabbit hole, and every old rig I found that had an ether spray option had no glow plugs. Every engine with plugs, said don't use ether. This search included old backhoes, dozers, semi trucks, detroit diesel buses and dump trucks etc in addition to light duty pickups. As a result, I've always detached the glow plug terminals before spraying any starting fluid in the rare occasion I've had to do it in extreme cold. Thoughts? I'd hate anyone to mess up their engine because they are in a hurry.

That's because the glow plugs can cause a fire in intake maybe? That's what the diesel tech told me last week when giving my truck back. But I have a manual switch for the plugs so if I ever spray I won't turn them on.

If your diesel doesn't like starting when cold, the first thing to do, is get it a shop, first thing to check is the battery, have the mechanical check that all of the glow plugs are working properly. If you have not had one lately, a oil change can always help. There are lots of well maintained diesels, that start right up, even when well below freezing, without ether....
@greenbaywacky
@greenbaywacky 3 жыл бұрын
true but when ya gotta roll and it dont wanna go a quick shot of ether will do the trick. Sometimes the glow plug and diagnostic repairs can be into the 1000's of dollars actually

Is this anything like "defrost windshield fast, just use hot water."? Don't ever use ether on a diesel! It ruins glow plugs. In a pinch use wd-40. Its kerosene based.

If your diesel motor has glow plugs, ether/ starting fluid can make too big of a bang, and catastrophically break internals. Also, it strips the lube off of the pistons, causing dry starts. Very bad. Those built in systems you speak of are on motors that don't use glowplugs. WD-40 after, not before, the air filter is better to use. What you need to do is ensure that your glow plugs and their switch are in good shape, and only use ford zd9 plugs, not the cheap autolite junk. Probably more importantly, you need to fix the leak in your fuel system. Even if diesel isn't leaking out, air could still leak in. Air intrusion causes your fuel system to lose prime and compression, making it not start, and could even make it run rough of bad enough. I'm not even a trained mechanic, dude, I learned all this from reading the forums, such as 'oil burners'. If you have any problem with your truck, doing a Google search, and reading some forum threads is the first step. I would only use starting fluid in a real emergency, and only a small puff. This video is all kinds of cringe.

I appreciate the comment. I have had diesels for years quick shots of ether in the air filter to fire up I have never had a problem. And Catipillar dozers and big equipment have built in injectors of either. But I do appreciate the comment. I will say I am really a comedian and entertainer I hope you will check those playlists out!! Have an awesome day!!

thats the hard core mechanic approach and I respect that but lots of actual bulldozers and other diesels have actual ether injectors built in . Using small shots here and there on hard starts is fine.

Dont do this on newer truck this can/will seriously damage newer diesel truck engines the older ones and heavy equipment like Bobcats and stuff should be fine but newer trucks good luck with that 5 to 10k repair bill I know from experience never buy a 6.0 ford.. smh if you have a newer truck check glow plugs fuel injectors and fuel rail line first
