Gareth Evans, I am sending this message from Sierra Leone, West Africa. I am currently a law student at the University of Sierra Leone, Fourah Bay College, Mount Aureole campus. I have watched a handful of your videos on the law trusts but this video truly caught my attention and I am one of those students who believe in reading something and ensuring that I read everything leaving no stone unturned. Essentially, when I read case laws, for example, I ensure that every part of that judgment is read. I have also realised that I spend a lot of time reading. To read for three hours as you said does not sound to me like I would have read enough. But again on second thought, I got to think that it is greatly affecting my social life. I could lock myself in a room for eight hours just reading. As I speak right now I am preparing for my second-semester exam for this academic year. I am currently reading eight (8) judgments of cases presided over by by my tutor on the law of real property. So far I have only read two out of the eight cases.

Hey, great to meet you and thanks for the message! If I'm honest, I think you're reading cases for far too long and definitely don't need to dive that deep into each individual case to do well at law school. As you say, it's going to affect your social life and your happiness... So, what's the solution? I highly recommend you only reading the MOST important cases all the way through. That's probably about 1-2 cases each week, max. For the rest of the cases the goal is to find and/or write a summary of the facts and judgement in 1-2 senntences. After all, you're just not going to remember everything beyond that. I used to give this advice to my children on how to do their essays! but when it came to me writing up my own law essays, I literally failed one after another! this time I will do exactly this and then re-write them!

Hi Gareth, ive just enrolled on an open university law degree and if could give me some tips moving forward, i haven't studied for along time, im 58 and a advanced plumber and gas engineer, but just wanted a challenge, so any advice for top marks, equipment needed including materials, im looking at laptops so best 1 for the degree etc etc books need anything and everything really.
