That's a great, great big bowl, lol. It's a pleasure watching you turn, and to see someone using a Bowl Gouge correctly, I see so many using the Bowl Gouge like it's a scrapper, and cutting with the flute facing upwards, I cringe expecting them to get a bad catch. Thanks for sharing your process.

Actually I do all my finishing cuts with the flutes facing up and the handle lowered. It is in fact a very fine sheer cut along the freshly sharpened edge of the gouge in contact with the wood. I haven't had a catch in a long time but it's always possible. it does take some nerve to start doing this.

Hi Bonnie, thank you for watching .. Some people say Danish oil is food safe when it is harden .. but Danish oil used like this, sit on the surface, and there is a possibility that it will chip off so you get it in you food, I know Hampshire sheen Danish Oil is declared toy and food safe, but that is pre-thinned so I dont think you will get the glass like result with it .. but I havnet tried .. So i cant telle you 100 % that it is or not .. Have a great day and stay safe 😀😀

Hey Kim, i can only agree with the previous speakers, what a wonderfull shine! And the Idea with the heat gun is new for me too. A similarly good result you can achievied with Shellack. The adventage of Shellack is, it is Food safe and naturally, Danisch Oil is an Chemical produkt. I discovered your Channel recently, and i love watching and listen to you. I am woodturning since three Years, and its wonderful. It could be, that we almost neighbors, depending on where you live in Denmark. My Home is nearly by the dänisch Border, round about 50 km southeast , on the Eastern Sea. Maybe we'll meet by chance, and we can talk about woodturning, when you let let us back in your kingdom😊 Many greatings and please stay care and healty!

Hi Thanks for the tip wit the Shellac, you are right the Danish oil is not food safe even though it is shellac based. I have looked for shellac in Denmark in premixed but it is crazy expensive and i never came around to get the flakes you can mix you self. it could be fun to meet a fellow woodturner i live in Tappernøje on Zealand near Næstved.. @@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP I've mixed my own shellac for many years now. It is very easy, you have a choice of do many shellac variations and complete control. I recommend using regular grain alcohol (not denatured) because the mixed shellac is more stable, it smells better, and is food safe. Thinned shellac makes a good sanding sealer and the shellac can also be mixed with a drying oil such as Walnut oil (food safe) for a friction polish. Food safe cured or uncured, smells great, dries very fast and any finish can be put on top of it.

I use the heat gun to speed up the drying yes, but that is only so I can apply 2 -3 coats at the time, and stop the lathe and dont get drips below , you still need to let it harden 24 + horeurs before sanding and applying the next 1 to 3 coats .. .. thank you for watching my videos .. stay safe 😀😀

Hi I’ve only just discovered your channel for some reason when it was flagged up on KZbin as one I might like. Already subscribe to other woodturners such as Andy Philip, Mike Waldt, R Humphrey, M Saban-Smith, Pierre Lusier, PF woodturning, Martin Woodhead etc and I’m definitely adding yours. This included some lovely tuition and advice and I never knew you could get such an amazing finish with Danish Oil - when I use it the pieces have a definite matt to eggshell finish. So thanks for the video and the very best of luck and success in all that you do.

Nice job! May I suggest that you could use a duffle bag or something of that sort filled with sand and fasten hanging under the base with a tie down strap to make the lathe heavier? Wet the sand when you need additional weight. It's a trick often used by photographers on their tripods windy days outdoors.

@paulschmolke188
@paulschmolke188 4 жыл бұрын
Start with 220 and raise the grain with a water alcohol mix. Get it smooth and go to 320 then 400. Pour on the oil and block sand with 600. It’ll take a few passes but the “dust”;turns into grain filler. Let it dry up between oil coats but repeat until you’re satisfied with the surface. I always finish up with wax and may use 4/0 steel wool to do the waxing. I’m brand new to turning but I’ve made lots of flat stuff from hardwoods.

Just some feedback. I'm doing this on some drums I'm building and I've found that I can get a really decent gloss after only 3 coats. It would probably be a bit better after four coats but I'm happy with the way it is now. Second, make sure the Danish oil is really dry before sanding between coats otherwise it'll gum up your sandpaper in about 2 seconds.

Is Danish oil drying exothermic or endothermic? I didn't understand the comment about the rags being able to spontaneously combust but the video showing you using a heat gun...
@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP
@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomaz, a part of the Danish oil is Lindseed oil and that is exothermic, that is why i always keep the paper towels in a jar after using it.. they hav the possibility to self ignite even though the manufacture dont write it can I just do it a role to not forget with other oils and the i go out at burn it when the jar is full .... the reason i use the heatgun is to start the harden process faster .. as I find it harden the surface a little and then dont get oil drops running ..
@RickTurnsWoodturning
@RickTurnsWoodturning 4 жыл бұрын
I would not have believed you could get such a nice glossy finish with just Danish oil. What is the purpose of the heat gun? Does it make the oil dry faster? Did you use it after each coat?
@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP
@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick, yes the heat gun hardens the surface so I can give it 2 to 3 coats at the time, I have tryed it on another piece without the heat gun after the one i filmed, and you get a pettey result with 1 coat and let it harden fully, and the one more and so on, I did 6 coats and got a better result.. and the chance you take with the heat gun is that sometimes the danish oil get sticki and wont harden, and when that happens there is no way back, you have to put a gauge on it and start over .. the trick of this is patience .. let it harden before going on .. thank you very much for watching and for the comment .. stay safe and have a great day ..

Are woodturning gouges used directly after grinding or do they need to be honed on an oilstone after grinding?
@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP
@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP 4 жыл бұрын
Hi James, I think that depend of who you asking, I did do it on a leather wheel in the beginning, but got lazy and stop doing it and found that the result on the cut was the same, I think when you make the first cut the wood more or less do the job for you in the first cut, but that is just my opinion.. I do use a diamond plate grit 400 but that is mostly for negative rake scraper and normal scrapers, with the grinding systems no mater witch you have, it is so fast to sharpen a gouge that I normally just take it to the grinder instead of using the diamond plate.. I did recently change sharpening system from the Tormek to the ProEdge and I have the same experience with that one. I hope that answered you question, otherwise feel free to write again, Stay safe and have a great day 😀😀

For wood turning, especially with high speed steel (HSS) tools, there's not a lot of point in honing - the very sharp tip of the tool that honing would give will be stripped off by the volume of wood flowing past it in just a few revolutions. HSS will still hold a good enough sharp edge for a long while, which is of course why we use it! Carvers do hone their tools, which are normally high carbon steel not HSS, but they only pass the edge through a few inches of timber in the same timescale...

So all of the Danish oil instructions I have seen insist on the apply / let soak 10-15 min / wipe off / let harden method. You don’t wipe off the finish at all, so it looks like to me you are putting most of your attention toward controlling the curing process, so the shiny look we see BEFORE we wipe off the finish will remain. This is all new thinking but i like it.
