I taught English in China for over 2 years, was planning to move to Thailand, but Cambodia seems like an easier place to make it. Thailand's popularity make it too touristy and competitive. At least it looks that way. I haven't been to either country yet. Do you think Cambodia is a less crazy / demanding place to teach and live?

It's weird because one of the other videos completely contradicts what's being said here. This one saying that schools don't really value online TEFL courses over face-to-face TEFL courses. The other one says the exact opposite; that school don't really care either way, they just want to see that you are certified. So, which is it? They care or they don't care?
@ninja.teacher6 жыл бұрын
In my experience it's shifted from just any certificate being okay to schools valuing quality in-class courses.

Anyone wanting to teach in Cambodia should go and help out at a school, try it out and see what fits you. I have helped for the last 3 years in a Polytechnical School and now they want me there full time and I continue helping at another school. I bring textbooks and supplies to both schools and they appreciate this so much and it opens the doors for you if this is the school you want to work at even if it is not you have helped the students out alot and I mean alot.

Hey Alex I have a question. When teaching English in Cambodia or Vietnam how do expats send money back home? Everything I have read is convoluted and gray. Would I use western Union, Pay Pall, or try and find a bank to do it? Any advice would really help. Thank you.
@justinparkhurst55078 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info Birget, I only have two manageable bills that I will have to pay at home and relocating with exhaust most of my fiances so a few months down the road I would need to feed my Bank at home. Depending on how long ill stay I know their is a limit on what you can leave the country with as well.

Alex, in a lot of your previous videos you suggested that on online course was more than enough to satisfy teaching for schools in Vietnam and Thailand. But now I have seen in your recent videos that you are pushing more towards the in-class courses. I was wondering if you had any reasons as to why you have changed your view and if this is correlated to your career?
@ninja.teacher8 жыл бұрын
Hey Reed, good questions and the answer is that after placing lots of people in jobs I've noticed the trend of schools moving more and more towards hiring well qualified teachers who are actually able to manage a classroom full of kids. While an online TEFL can often still land people with certain qualifications a job, quality schools are really looking for some kind of proof of teaching English ability, whether that's previous experience or an in class course that contains a good number of observed classroom teaching hours.

Nice video Alex - fellow UCT grad here! As someone who's not sure about taking a whole year or two to teach abroad, what would you recommend as the minimum time period for going out there and teaching?
@jaclynhouston8 жыл бұрын
Hi, this is Jaclyn with the Ninja Teacher Team. We'd recommend committing to at least 6 months out here. Most of the reputable schools want at least a 6 month commitment. This will also give you time to really experience the country and the culture!
@onedead6 жыл бұрын
Jaclyn couldn't be more wrong! If the school is reputable, they will want you to sign a full year from Sept to Aug (assuming they have a summer school session). If they do not have a summer session, then you'll have a 10 month contract. I have never heard of a school in Cambodia that looks for and purposely agrees to sign a teacher for 6 months (unless there is only 6 months or less left in the school year). If/when the parents find out the teacher just up and left the school, abandons the students, and this appears to be a reoccurring situation at the school they will pull their kids out of that school fast !!

@kylesnow33648 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are a lot of holidays in Asia in general, but school is not cancelled for all of them - just for the bigger holidays.
@onedead6 жыл бұрын
If some holidays fall on a weekend, then some businesses and schools will be closed on the following Monday. It does depend on the 'status' of the holiday though, as to whether or not the business/school is closed the next business day. My school had 22 paid days off due to holidays this year - not too bad!

@onedead6 жыл бұрын
I would say no (to being too old), generally speaking, however it depends on your health. I'm no doctor, but if you can walk a flight of stairs without getting winded, no known serious heart disease, have stayed pretty active, can handle the relentless heat and humidity, I'd say you'd get hired. I've worked with a 53 year old and a 58 year old here in Phnom Penh.
