This really works. My horse likes to jig especially with new riders on the way back to the barn. I teach people mostly children how to ride. I teach them this method when he starts jigging their hand go up. Stops jigging the hands go in the thank you spot, which is down. After a few times he gets it. A bit has nothing to do with it. This is with a Hackamore. It works. You got to have the timing but the kids are good at it! Thank You Carson James. You rock!

I'm in Australia and I have a Waler x Curly Mustang mare with a bit of Thoroughbred thrown in. She's a beautiful girl and very good natured, but is born and bred to go! I bought her unbroken, and broke her myself, so she is a very special girl to me. I like to go as well, that's why I bought her, but when she gets hot, and won't come back down, she's scary! I've been working on the halt-walk transition, and even at that level, she doesn't want to stop, at the halt, she dances around, "Jigs" as you call it, and is just waiting for the lightest touch on her flank, to tell her that it's time to go! This morning, during training (walk-halt-walk) she got so frustrated, when I wouldn't let her go at a point on the track when I sometimes open up and let her fly, that she went all mustang, bucked and threw me, out of the blue, and galloped back to the stable! I wasn't really badly injured, just a bit sore, bless be to God and his Angels, but I growled at her when I caught up to her! I got straight back on, and she didn't throw me again, but I could feel her tension and she was still dancing at the halt. We went back to the same place on the trail, I could feel that she wanted to go again, but I just growled "DON'T YOU DARE!" and she cut it out and walked instead, but the very fastest walk that she could manage! So she was tense, and I was tense, which probably didn't help, but there were no other incidents, aside from her continuing to dance at the halt. She is better than she was (now she dances, before, she was unstoppable!), but I have been racking my brains for what to do about her hotness. I'm going to try this with her, either this afternoon, or tomorrow morning, and I'll let you know how it goes... BTW, true to her Mustang and Waler genetics, she lives on hay and the truly pathetic grass that grows around here, and does well on it! This latest batch of hay was oaten hay, though, and so she is getting a bit of oat seed with it, but no extra grains, she's never needed it, and I always thought that grains would probably be a bad idea, in her case...

It takes a bit for a trainer to impress me but yeah I actually like this. This horse is identical to my gelding, physically and behaviourally. He's a hank man Leo descendant, I've heard they are often hot like this and it's a real pain finding methods to fix it.

So when you’re riding in the arena in your hands or on the horn what are you getting what are you doing to get him to slow down and speed up?

Some say jigging the bit like that often will make their mouth tougher. I have had great results turning the horse into tight figure 8s until he walks. After a few consisting times like this the horse will walk rather than burst into a canter or trot. Do you ever use that method?

His hands are so light I really do not see how you do not see that. He is just using pressure and release getting his attention and keeping the horse calmer in the process.

I have a horse that runs side ways and he's done it ever since we have had him. I have tried most things to get him to stop but nothing seems to work. Do you have any advice?

Yes my horse can run full speed with his neck turned on a left rein(inside rein) but not turned slightly on the right (outside rein). I release if he slows a bit but more times then not he is trying to run extremely fast. I see you run barrels... that's why my horse is screwed up. Seems like they just got on him and ran. My horse doesn't even think clearly when he is running fast he is completely out of control. I can't believe someone was trying to run barrels off of him like this. If he is not thinking clear and out in front of you he had to suck running barrels. Not to mention he is hollowing out his back surprised he didnt have back issues. Hopefully some of these exercises can help him! Because we have just been trying to walk him and stay calm on him to get his headset back to normal and it is a slow process. He has some improvement but inconsistent. Can't wait to use this exercise.
