You would get paid when you are in the venue whether you are in the chair or not. You usually chair less than 6 matches each day. If you compare the amount of work and the play level of the local amateur matches with grand slam matches, the chair umpire in grand slams are seriously underpaid.

Another awesome video as always! I was surprised at how much money an umpire could make, for I thought it would be higher. To answer the question about being a chair umpire, I wouldn't do it. Yeah, the view is the best in the house, and having a gold badge gives you the best chance to officiate top matches. However, I couldn't enjoy the match like a spectator due to the duties you mentioned in the video. I'd have to be as sharp as a knife by paying attention to every detail during the match, let alone doing that for hours. The chair umpire is essentially a leadership position, which can be stressful to fulfill, occasional injuries aside (that eye hit Arnaud Gabas took during Shapovalov's 2017 Davis Cup match - ouch!). Still, it's good to see that people are willing to take that position.
