I think for fans, constantly seeing the content creators can make you feel a connection to them. It can seem like you know them and thusly want to work with/for them. The reality is that we only see a small percentage of who these people are and how RT runs. All the content RT makes is well developed by professionals; nearly everyone working on their major projects are already qualified. People who say "I want to work at RT" might as well be saying "I want to work at Google". It's a company, they hire people based on their experience. You can't just say "I know your content and want to work there because it looks cool". I think this is what Burnie meant by "You don't want to work here, you should make your own RT". Work on your craft, follow opportunities and let them take you further than just being a fan.

That was lovely, thank you Burnie. There's a lot I can take from this. First and foremost, a reminder to always keep my mind and doors open. As someone who is young and trying to crack into an entertainment industry, it's very boosting to hear these stories from various voices. I certainly have a lot to learn, and I hope that I'm wise enough to take this to lead myself down a fruitful path. Sometimes I'm not sure. I make no doubt that it can be a difficult journey. At many times my family and peers ask me what the hell I'm doing and try and tell me to "do a normal thing", whatever it is that that means. But dammit I want it too badly to concede to that. Thanks for putting this together, and best to you and to those that helped!

Honestly great advice- ever since I watched RWBY I've wanted to work at Rooster Teeth as a writer, it's my greatest talent, I've been working on writing books and hopefully becoming an author for 2 years now and I'be only just turned 16. Hearing "You don't want to work at Rooster Teeth, you want to make your own Rooster Teeth" made me really think- I've wanted to work at RT because I love shows like RWBY, the animations. Essentially, I wanted to work their because I loved the stuff RT do and as a skilled writer wanted to do more of that. The thing is I realise that as a writer, working for something like RT I'm not doing want I truly want- yeah, I'd love to write RWBY or anything else the team works on but what I really want to be doing and should be doing is writing my own stuff, my own RWBY in a sense. You can't expect to pitch a script to RT and expect them to hire you to work on it or to hire you based on any of the scripts you write, though the latter could happen but requires more than just a few scripts. I'd have to move out to America to work at RT, when here in the UK there is literally the BBC where you can get a job working on any of their series! I'd love to work on and make my own stuff inspired by RT, tho I'd have to get someone else to do animation, tho expecting to get picked up the company should just be the unlikely dream that I shouldn't really be worrying about, not a driving ambition that is my goal in the end. This video really helped give me hope, as well as putting things into perspective.

This is actually super inspiring. I've often thought that doing all my stuff I'm currently doing and not making money off of was getting me nowhere fast, but now I think that if I keep getting better and working on my craft it might eventually lead me to other opportunities. Thanks!

Burnie tried to also avoid the giant elephant in the room as a qualifier: Be in the right place, at the right time, around the right person/people. Most of those stories entailed the fact that the person managed to speak with somebody high in the corporate chain already who could muscle another person into the business. Granted, though, once the person is in the business, if you don't work your ass off to make people -- the RIGHT people -- happy, you're easily cut and replaced by somebody else who was in the right place, at the right time, speaking with the right person/people.

Well put! This is not only good advice for how to get a job in entertainment, but in any career. Many people struggle to realize how much time and effort is put into getting into the place they want to be. Working from the bottom up for nothing but experience sometimes creates a great network and opportunity. Pretty much everyone Burnie talked to had to put their time on the line for almost no reward at first. Burnie is right about starting your own 'Rooster Teeth'. Look at Funhaus, Screw Attack and the rest of the conglomerate that we have come to know through Rooster Teeth. Good Video! Good Message!

For those of you (like myself) who are looking to enter the technical field of entertainment (cameras, lighting, gaffers etc). My advice is to attempt to shadow someone already doing it as they're jobs that aren't really learnt on paper but more on the job. and yes, it certainly helps to know people already. I know this from experience because I have contacted over 80 companies and several individuals and none of them can really help. Volunteer to work on productions and short films to show your enthusiasm and that alone should help you stand out from the crowd.

But before my freshmen year that's all I thought, but by the end of freshman year, I had learned so much about my industry and what I want to do. Most important thing that I have learned from that year is, make things that are from your own head, play around. Soon enough someone will spot you, as long as your doing good that is. I digress, know I know I will have to be in the industry for some time, and if a day comes and I am not feeling I'm the right place, and hopefully RT is still around, I will apply for a job at Rooster Teeth -Ben Rednor

This video actually helped shine some light on how I should approach my future. I always wanted a job at RT, but I didn't want to be on camera or be the face of anything like some other people. I want to do animation, I wanted to tell stories and possibly help write them, and the best way I thought I could start on that path was to go to school for it. I'm still in my first year studying animation and working as security as my job. I figured at first if I wanted a job at RT, I'll apply for an internship there on my 4th year and maybe work from that. I need plenty of experience if I am to get a job in RT. And even if I don't get one, the thought of it has been a good motivator for me and may help me get into something else where I can make what I want. I've never had a solid plan for the future, this video assures me that my future won't be as cut-and-paste as I once thought.

I like this video because it articulates the fact that people should just GET A JOB! ANY JOB! I'm a graphic designer who works in marketing now and my first job was bagging groceries at a store. I hire people to work under me and if I have two people, one is brilliant at design and knows all the software but no work experience and the other is ok at design and software knowledge but has any prior work experience, I will always pick the person with work experience. Teaching people how to use software is a lot easier (and cheaper) than teaching people discipline. Just get any job that will hire and be awesome at it!

What I really took from this video is you need to know someone. Its about the connections. Like gavin said he didn't get paid to follow that guy around with the highspeed camera, but he learned and that lead him to bigger things. You know thats what I'm doing right now. If its something you want to do, and to get your foot door, or to learn, to get experience, your going to have to sacrifice money over experience and one day the money will come. Also what Koen Wooten said "Learn as many different crafts as possible." That just doesn't go for entertainment. Don't get locked into doing one thing. I am in school for audio engineer, I just jumped into making youtube videos to get into film editing and creating, I also work on cars every weekend. Just in my option you open a lot more doors when you just don't tie yourself down to one craft to passion. Anyway thank you Burnie this really helped me to keep trying and keep pushing and maybe one day that lucky break will happen to me.

I think it's also nice to point out that it's also important to network. Even to this day, you need to be in the right place at the right time to get a job in the industry. Which is a shame because more often than not jobs go to people who are "friends of friends". So make sure you have a portfolio, experience, something to differentiate yourself and be willing to work your ass off. Look for schemes in your country's Independent Film organisations as they have internships that try and avoid the "Friends of friends" problem as they hire inexperienced people and train them for the future. GOOD LUCK!

One semester left until I graduate from my film program! I'm definitely going to apply! RvB inspired me to make my own machinima, and it took off from there!

I really love the vlogs and the really informative videos. Doing stuff like this really helps and helps me figure out what to do in my life and how to get to where i want and where to start. Thanks for the video and to the people in the video :D

There seems to be a lot of dumb luck involved. Gavin just happened to meet that camera guy. Ezra just happened to meet Al Gore's assistant. Bethany just happened to meet Gus. They just happened to meet a Rooster Teeth member getting sushi.

That's the takeaway you got from Gavin? He also said he wasn't paid well working for the camera guy, while working a second job and juggling school at the same time. Dumb luck means nothing if he didn't go through all of that effort afterwards. Make the most of the opportunity you were given which is what everyone in this video did.

GodZirraAnim plenty of people come into contact with important people and don't go anywhere from there. It takes someone seizing the opportunity to really make a difference.

Luck is just preparedness + opportunities Lots of random opportunities pop up in life- focus on what you can control, which is your knowledge and experience. Work to grow both to fully take advantage of an opportunity.

Yeah that's a lot of dumb luck, and for every person who pursues an opportunity that makes them end up where they want, there are tons of opportunities that will end you up in nowheresville. The main point is to keep on trying??? I guess?

Plot twist. It wasn't luck. They had it all planned out in their rooms and they executed the plan perfectly.

Appreciate the life advice. This goes well and beyond just the entertainment field. Work hard and work smart. Figure out what you want to do and work towards it, but always be open to other options if the current one doesn't work out. Also, you're gonna have to work some low-pay jobs you might not like to get by until you find what you really wanna do in life.

I come back to this video every now and then and watch the part where Burnie says, “You don’t want to work at Rooster teeth, you want to make your own Rooster Teeth” and I just think about it. It would be a dream to work at RT, so I’m taking a film class right now and more in the future so that I can do that, but I think about what Burnie said and I instead wonder about what I could do without RT.

have ambition, know yourself really well, don't fear to take risks outside your comfort zone, take on adventures, and don't fear volunteering, have a great intuition and a great ratio of luck, and follow your heart. done all that and joined YT for 9 years and ended retiring from it.... got any other things to add?

Almost all of this video works for a lot of other industries also, like if you want to get into, say, R&D in chemistry for whatever company, you can find a professor in charge of a research team (doing something related to your desired industry) and ask if you could just help for free. You can get great connections and knowledge about your industry.
