Hiring managers have never seemed to learn anything in life and realize how practice works. They just don't get that if you give someone a chance that person can be dang good at something when they do it 40 hours a week. I'd hire the guy that has no experience over 10 years experience because the 10 years experience guy is probably stuck in their ways. The no experience guy will soak things up like a sponge to gain experience

I'll play Devil's Advocate: If I receive 2 applications where both applicants have a similar set of skills, but one has experience, you bet your ass I'm going to try to hire the one with experience. A hiring manager's job is to hire somebody who can do the job, not to run a charity where they give people chances. The last thing a hiring manager wants is to find out 3 months from now the person gave a chance to isn't cut out for the job and when management asks why they turned away the one with experience, their reason is, "Well, I wanted to give this guy a chance." You think that's going to go well for the hiring manager?

Being "too old for the job" is a major problem if you are trying to get back to work after a layoff, injury or change. Most employers I have interviewed with tell me they want somebody "more qualified" or "better educated" which means they want a recent graduate with lamestream morals.

Little tip: if you’re giving off any kind of energy that you look down on people who think differently about society or morality than you do people aren’t going to want to hire you, especially if they have people in their company who may be affected by you having outdated views on race or gender (if that’s what you mean by “lamestream”)

I'll keep it vague, but I'm older, have worked in one industry for a while, but had a phone interview in a different industry I'm very interested in that went well. Looking good, moving onto the next step. it was cool, the recruiter told me to focus on one area of my past experience that pertains to the job, since the rest of the type of work would be completely new to me. Hoping for the best and keep putting out great content.

I'm 17 and my first ever job interview was in April last year, at a Rosauers. I went in for a second interview the next day, I was so unprepared and a nervous wreck, but I must have done something right because they hired me, I was so excited. But by the next morning they hadn't emailed me any of the resources they said they would later that day, so I called them and they had un-hired me, because the upper hiring manager decided that they'd hired too many people the previous day.

I tell you what I don't understand is this: even if a person gets hired with the experience needed for the job, he or she still needs to trained on how the company wants the job done. In the past, I've had jobs and knew some people who got prestigious jobs and got good on the job training with hardly little or no experience. Also, depending where you live at, you might be in a situation where there isn't a high demand for a job you really want. For example: if you live in an area where there are not a lot of IT job openings, then finding an IT job will be very tough. However, move to another area where there are plenty of IT related jobs and careers, and now you are in a better position to get an IT job.

@congeedaily

When I attempted it, it came down to 3 things (assuming US expat) 1) Taxes 2) Cost of Living (rent, food, transport, etc) 3) Health Coverage. If you are a US citizen, working in another country has annoying tax implications. So study up before looking (I got to offer stage and pretty much could not figure out if the offer was competitive after US and Local taxes withheld). The other 2 are also complicated because you are an expat. So don't expect the same medical coverage as locals, many expats seek private medical coverage (more expensive). Finally cost and quality of living might be a shocker (some good some bad). The application process is pretty much the same when done via the company's job board (very low success). I found more success when I started working with an international (U.S. Specific) head hunter in that country, the one I worked with was an expat themselves. I had leads in a few days from companies looking for US talents. You'd also have a much easier time as the recruiter will navigate all complications, bureaucratic or cultural with you. They are very good and motivate. This is only available if you have a skill that the locals value. If your skill are onpar with locals, you won't have any success. One you have a job lead, Bryan's suggestions are pretty much applicable everywhere.

I started with jobs most people didn't want. Farm work then US Army then carpenter helper. When I applied for a software programming job (video games) I wrote a simple game on an Apple II first. But again, at that time most people had never heard of computers or software so companies hiring weren't looking for experience because those people didn't really exist. I went into software because it was new which meant I wouldn't need experience. So today I would look for jobs in things that are new. Installing fiber, solar systems and of course software. Software is always changing, there's always a new language, system. Going into new fields pay much better, faster advancement imo. I'd also be looking at starting my own business. Putting roofs on homes is fun, pays well and very low cost for equipment. I'd stay away from things that don't pay well like lawn maintenance. Low pay = high competition. High pay = low competition. It's kind of the opposite of what you might assume. Also high pay often = lots of freedom, low pay = being whipped. Careful about jobs where you have to use your car because cars are more expensive to operate than most people think. I'd always be looking for new businesses and ways you can try it out spending little time or money. The best businesses take off and you have to catch up. Spending money is easy....don't fall into the trap of "if I only brought this thing my business would pick up". Instead you want to be almost burned out trying to keep up with demand, cash coming in, before investing more.

I have a question not dealing with this subject. I recently left a job, I had a new supervisor who is a lot younger than myself and inexperienced. I felt he was a bully and after I complained, my job performance was criticized and my probation put in doubt. Rather than quit, I went through the union, and my employer and myself agreed to a mutual separation. I received some severance and my leaving was not considered being fired or me quitting. But now what do I tell potential employers why I left and while I do have a good reference with the company, a previous supervisor, I don't have a good reference with my last supervisor.

Here are some notes I took from a video by an HR manager that might help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnO9iWh8eJJ7nck How to explain that you got fired from your last job? You don't have to. Never tell them you got fired. HR is not allowed to say if you got fired from a job when they are called and asked. They can only tell them dates of employment and your last job title. Say you left for another reason. Figure one out like you were pursuing other opportunities since the job wasn't doing it for you and you wanted to take some time to reeducate yourself, to learn some things, you saved up enough money so you could sit at home and improve on your skills while you pursued opportunities to better yourself in your career. You left because you are always looking for opportunities for growth. You don't have to say you were let go or you quit because you hated it. They don't need to know any of that. Sell yourself. Although you don't have to include a job you left you will have to explain the gap in the history. So you don't have to put anything about it but at least put the name of the company and the dates you were there. Also, it is doubtful that HR will actually call your job references because they know you probably just put a friend's phone number down.

As a SAHM for the past 8 years, who plans to stay home another 3 before considering renter ing the workforce, I could use some guidance on how to prepare. While the likely answer is to “have one foot in the working world while staying home”, most SAHM’s I know do not do this for a multitude of reasons. I feel that this lost decade is going to be terribly looked down upon, yet I realize that after that 1 job offer, the sky is the limit as long as I am willing to accept challenge. For me, I will not only need to reinvent myself, but I also prefer to! Most SAHM’s I know plan to also reinvent themselves as well and most seem to set the bar fairly low or go back to school, neither of which I want consider unless it makes for a quick transition (6 months or less). It seems that most ladies I know in this position tend to think that the school lunch lady or a MLM is the best they can do.
