Many thanks for your recommendations and I hope I did my pitch according to the comments you provided. However, the job was closed yesterday. I have six years local government experience and then completed my Graduate Certificate in Policy as I want to work for that area. So I applied for a APS4 position. Now the waiting game started.

There are lots of selection criterias that are asking questions still though but you are right the pitch is coming more common in 2022. Apparently they using the ILS less in APS interviews but not sure if that’s true.

I'm very upset I got rejected over "impression" ... I posses relevant qualifications but worked as a teacher for 5 years so basically every APS 5 level standard i could address In the APS4 interview, i got asked questions utilising "relevant experience ". I've never worked in that role before but I could tell they are hiring contractors into permanent roles or expect that level of detailed answers from you. Plus government doesn't want to.train you anymore, they want a full package at APS4

its very very hard I know, I've had 2 APS5 contracts and struggled to get permanent or on going, had many rejections, going for an interview tomorrow again, praying I get it! BUT I totally understand your position, You need to highlight transferable skills and read the ILS.

its very very hard to get an ongoing or non ongoing job in APS from being outside the department, I have had lots of APS interviews and yet to get a permanent position, its so so disheartening and dehumanising.. but I have not given up, have an interview for an APS department tomorrow again. The process is so so unfair or hard I feel, I interview really well but cos of competition I end up losing out:(. Selection criteria is really time consuming and hard to do then you wait forever for an interview only to have someone already acting in the position that can sometimes be guaranteed the job:(. it takes like 3-6 months in some cases. I have APS5 contract experience but going for an APS4 interview tomorrow praying O get the job, its just so so exhausting getting rejections. Sometimes they also don't give feedback when you ask them to because too busy. The STAR method is a bit tedious and ridiculous and selection criteria is really time consuming:(. I guess the key is to keep learning and not give up hope and work in the private sector until you get your lucky break. BUT its really hard.

Hey Mountain, thanks a lot for sharing your experience! My question is how long does it take to get a response from GOV after the reference check?

how hard is it to get an aps job without going to university?

Hi there. To apply for an APS (Australian Public Service) position, completing university is not necessarily required. It really depends on the position you are applying for. For example, if the position involves law, you will need a degree. Similarly, other positions requiring specific qualifications will also necessitate a degree. As a public servant myself, I can say that we value individuals who think outside the box, and who are great team players, who show resilience and who can get the job done. Hope this answers your question.

Hi mate, thanks for your video it is very helpful. Question: for the engineers APS employees that work at a Defence force branch, do they have to go through military training? Or wear military uniform while at work? Thank you

Do you have any insight for an APS4 contractor? I don't have a degree but do I have a couple of years of experience as a contractor. Would this be a suitable pathway into an APS4 role within Services Australia itself, or am I kidding myself, and should I go to uni?

no go for it, you have the experience! that's golden. You don't need a uni degree if you have experience.

What would you recommend if you are a fresh graduate or you have never had a leadership role, does this have much of a impact i guess for APS 3/4 + Thanks

I recommend trying out for all the graduate rounds that you can. Not having leadership experience is not an issue at a graduate level but it is great to use in an example of you have some! I also recommend seeing if you can find some APS 4 contractor roles depending on your experience, it’s very easy to move around departments as a contractor and get a feel for what you like. This being said, the best option is to go for the grad positions in each department.
