When I had this problem I ended up filing back the wood a bit around the nut enough to just seat a socket and get em off with an impact, was able to move it to where I wanted with a wrench later.

I used CLR cleaner (Calcium Lime Rust) to free my nib. Things get bigger when they rust. There is a term "rust jacking" when the rust behaves like a hydraulic jack to lock things together. Strong acids can dissolve rust, but so can the safer chelating agents in CLR.

Thanks for these videos. Sometimes in situations similar to this, I use a good soldering gun and press the tip of the gun on the nut for a couple of minutes, to heat up the nut, then apply penetrating oil and most of the time it frees the nut loose. thanks.

Good tips Pa. I have my Dad' s scythe and it is in perfect condition. Esp the comments on repeated applications of penetrating oil. (My splitter seized and I squirted PB in the spark plug hole every day for a week and it free'd it up.

Now I know where to start when my nib sticks . I'm coming back into scythe use and I'm refreshing the memory . 🤔

This video and all of the comments have given me plenty of options to consider should the penetrating oil not work. Heat and CLR.

I find Evapo-Rust really works well. The active ingredient EDTA, is a little oily but is also water soluble so won't be as bad as penetrating oil or transmission fluid to remove. It is also quite safe, hopefully, since it is put in bread to protect freshness. It keeps bread fresh by binding iron so tightly it can pass through you and water treatment plants unaltered.

After you have applied penetrating oil, and given it time to soak in, apply heat with a heat gun or hair dryer.

Bought a scythe that didn’t have reverse thread nibs. They tightened clockwise like a normal nut and bolt. Possibly try turning it the other way. (Carefully and gently)

If you can, grab a socket the size of the nut. You have to hit it hard enough to Crack that rust loose but don't break the nib. Good luck.

Probably, I will be shouted down for this . . . but, I have never considered penetrating oils to be useful .

Do you know how a modern farmer keeps track of the livestock? He uses a cow-culater.
