Dude this was such a good idea for a video. I’m lucky to be able to understand naturally how to find tones with my finger/pickup/ampEQ/speaker (probably experience), but it’s such a not-talked about thing and for newer bassist, probably frustrating. I tried guitar very early on - it was a super cheap strat, all dials dimed, dry signal and flat EQ - and I hated the sound so much I stopped playing guitar. I didn’t sound anything like what I heard and my teacher never told me why or how to get there.

For palm muting....Do you use the full pad of thumb or as you glide over string ... slide the side of the thumb up to the joint?
@The_official_c2 ай бұрын
for me, the palm muting actually comes from the pad of your palm on your pinky side and then i adjust pressure and how close to the bridge my hand is to control the level of muting

Hopefully on a live gig, the Soundman is good too. Some soundmen just shove the bass into the sub woofers via an aux send….with hardly any full signal on the bass fader… creates lots of mud…. Aux send on 8 and bass fader on two, lol. Then you get Boomy sound matching to the kick drum, but no clarity….then all the consideration of using a less defined tone doesn’t really help in the house. Then again if you have a great FOH engineer, life is good! Cheers.
@The_official_c Жыл бұрын
Great point! Of course you’d have to work with soundman and room to tweak your sound. That might mean dialing in a little more mids but like you say a great sound engineer should be able to work the front of house That’s why I only boost bass small amounts if necessary and more likely to pull up lower mids to add some ‘weight’ to the sound

Thank you for this! Maybe I missed it but what strings are you using?
@The_official_c8 ай бұрын
In all honesty this video is so old I’m not sure! I’ve personally not found string brands to be MASSIVELY different in tone and regularly move around between strings. Never had issues with dunlops, d’addarios, Ernie ball or even bass centre. I’ve ran rotosounds too. I like the sound but they are a little grabby texture wise when playing so I tend to avoid those now. But in general I go with a medium gauge round wound , 45 to 130 and ride the tone control to suit my technique and genre of the material

@The_official_c2 жыл бұрын
You’ll want a 5 string to get the really low notes but you don’t need a 5 string to achieve the tone! General rule of thumb, play softer, closer to the neck role off some tone on a passive bass or roll off some treble and a small bass boost 🙌🏾

not on the bass I played, they'll definitely help you there but if you're running 1 bass and need a versatile range of sounds (like a set with slap or more agressive tones along with more typical neo soul/r&b numbers) I've found it way easier to dial down my town than to brighten it up
