Not everyone thinks of imagination as a skill, but it is- and because of that you can LEARN it with the right structure. You might be doing what I talk about in the video already, if so, great. If you've never thought about any of this, well dang I hope it helps! 😘😘

Hiya Marc, I know you'll probably not respond to this but what about artists with Aphantasia? (aka people who physically can't envision/have a visual library or visual imagination in general) As someone who isn't really an artist yet but wants to learn, this is the biggest hurdle for me to overcome, I know basic shapes and can stick them together and can even work with references or copy other people's drawings decently but I don't really know how to compose my own art yet, when I do perspective is off and I don't get how the shapes connect anymore which makes it frustrating. Any suggestions for people with Aphantasia to learn these skills or practice in other ways to make up for this lack of visual imagination?

Hey, like its a popular enough topic, I guess, what about scetches in traditional art like paper and than doing full ones in digital , there are a lot of points from other artists on this work flow. Interested in your take. Do you like only use digital or do you carry around some small notebooks to make capturing an idea easier?

Hey Marc! I think an awesome tutorial would be "how to design within a theme / style" You could go over the design of multiple objects, characters, monsters, etc that all come from the same world (like a game, or faction within a game) or style i.e. steampunk/ high fantasy/ scifi style and keep a unified look across all the designs

I did something very similar to improve my imagination when drawing. I started as a child by recreating my favorite comic art. As I did that I also developed my own preferences on how to do things in my original drawings. Eventually I started taking reference and instead of recreating it as exactly as I could I would keep the pose and expression but change things like musculature and facial features to my own preferred style. Perhaps even changing the light source and shading it differently as well. It greatly improved my ability to draw dynamic figures without any reference

This is something I have done many times in the past. I will make a character based on a franchise and then eventually strip away things more exclusive to that franchise and then rebuild them with concepts that are part of the setting I have personally worldbuilt.

Constrains in art being more inspirational is so true. All summer brake I was working on my own fictional world and made pretty much no progress,I had absolute art block, but now back in uni Im working on illustrations for another student's ttrpg's world. I've made more concepts and illustrations in a week then I did all summer.

I've always been told thinking inside the box is better than outside the box, because constraints are more common in real life and it teaches you how to twist and push the boundaries. Conversely total freedom usually collapses into habit and familiarity, producing a less creative product.

Love the constraints tip. Also love the "mod your stuff" tipp. BUT there's one thing about "try to get away from reference" that I learned about waaaay too late in my own art path. And it's called "Aphantasia". Which basically means that you see lot less vivid images in your head even up to "I don't see sh*t in my head and ... WTF that's not normal you cann viasualize this inside your head??". Or in other words - basically means that some people might actually need a lot more reference than others and that this is not something to feel bad for, or to be seen as "lesser skill". Tthere are, in fact, eve quite a few artists, apparently that have aphantasia. "Get away from refernce anyone can do it" ... may actually not as easy or for everybody as we thought. You can still be an awesome artists and have a very distinctive style with aphantasia. But your workflow just might actually have to be different from other artist's worflows or what would be regarded as best practices. "Everybody can and should aspire to draw from imagination" being one of them.
@werewolf1e
@werewolf1e Жыл бұрын
As an aphantasia artist, what i do is basically start from the roughest level possible, like a line that represents the spine, then start adding scribbles and erasing/redrawing until it "kicks in" and you know where all the parts should be. Having a reference of the subject to look at (even if it's a completely different pose) helps a lot for me, since it feels like unlocks the visual memory easier. You basically try to use the canvas and your hand as your imagination, experiment a lot (transform/liquify or redrawing), try different poses and stuff.

That video came just in time, I'm trying to get back to drawing after around 4 years without drawing, I'm very rusty at the moment, I'm trying to not get frustrated but it is really hard when comparing my past self and my current self, I need to keep practicing and that video boosted my confidence a little bit because I noticed that I was putting the cart before the horse, just got back and started trying to draw without references just from imagination and was wondering why I couldn't do it.

One question I have for a lot of art teachers is what you recommend for artists with aphantasia. The best (only) advice I’ve ever been told is just to get good at thumbnailing. But the advice of coming up with rules and notes for the world you’re drawing for I think can help a lot of us. We may not be able to come up with an image in our brains, but having guidelines can help provide structure and ideas that assist the thumbnailing and art process.

It takes 2-3 months to fully comprehend every exercise in the book (it also has companion videos) but when you're done you will be able to instinctually draw organic forms in perspective. Highly recommend it

Been drawing from my imagination ever since I was a child, and looking back I realize I did quite a few of the things you recommended here without even knowing. Drawing fanart, making fan-characters, turning most of them into my own more original characters later. Now having multiple settings for those characters to live in. Will likely continue to reuse and repeat these steps multiple times as I continue working on self improving.

If you go on websites like deviant art, you can find different species that people make. A lot of them are closed species and require the purchase of a creation slot or an adoptable, but there are also lots of open species, where the creator of the world and type of creature has different lists of body types, colors, features and accessories your character can have, and you create your own character with whatever you choose for them! It can be a really fun way to stay imaginative while working on art in a slightly more structured way as opposed to free reign imagination. I feel so happy that I can give this advice. For once all my years on deviant art pay off! Lol
