RC car setup is super important but so is the driver. We often look to blame the cars and blame others and this might be necessary but if we are honest we need to take responsibility and develop ourselves as racers.
Lap monitor has been great to help us monitor our times and develop our consistency but looking back at your racing lines can really iron out your faults.
In this video we look at racing lines and explore how this impacts on overall performance.

It took me a long time to learn that when I'm at the track I need to spend more time focusing on me and less time focusing on the car and that no amount of setup can make up for poor driving. I now have a list of "driving fundamentals" I work on every time I'm at the track. I get faster when I improve my fundamentals. If I get distracted and start chasing setup, I don't get faster. Taking this approach has made a huge difference in my performance.

It is easy to blame the car and chase setups that are not there

To be honest, it's all down to practice, and ask the better drivers for advice. I'm not a great driver, I struggle with my consistency a lot, but now and again I can put some good laps in and do reasonably well. I race because I enjoy it, not because I want to win, and I've made a lot of friends out of it over the last couple of years, and for me that is way more important than winning....

My son and I are just venturing into RC racing and we've been binge watching your videos, soaking up every bit of information we can. We like your channels down to earth style. A nice mix of knowledge, technical tips, reviews, banter, and humor. Keep up the great work! Its much appreciated for us rookies.

Very useful, thank you. Having been driving for a year I still don’t understand oversteer and understeer. Also some of the other terminology that is used like running deep etc. a video that not just explains some of this but demonstrates what it looks like would be great.

@@PopalongRC there are lots of descriptions but no demonstrations. I am finding that there is loads written and described about set up and driving but few manage to capture how it is translated from explanation to driving

As someone that's still new at this, I'm going through this too. I struggle with my depth perception and having confidence in the direction my buggy is pointed, but that is getting better with time and practice. What has helped me quite a bit is watching others' race lines and being conscious of staying on a good line. The other thing that has helped me quite a bit is asking others about where they are braking for the tricky corners. One of the top drivers at our track told me how he liked to use the brake rate on the ESC. I slowed how quickly the brakes came on so I could run more brake, and brake later approaching the corner. Then someone else said I should do that from the transmitter. The 4PM has brake mixing and can set rate there but I am experimenting with ABS, which is never a thing I considered before. It's more immediate than changing the rate, but it lets me run a lot of brake without upsetting the buggy. I also used the speed setting to slow down my steering inputs, which smoothed my driving significantly. I'm still running back of the pack but each week I watch my consistency and average track times improve. I also had one of the fast guys drive my car so I could watch it and to rule out the car as something that might be hindering potential. It's definitely not the car 😅. It was the car for a couple weeks before I realized bald tires were making it handle erratically
