I know this is for people arriving by plane, but if your ICE only goes via the airport, and not the central station and you need to change to regional services, plan at least 5 minutes for the interchange, since it is a bit of a walk between the stations. Plan more time if you have heavy luggage and/or need a ticket for the RMV. sincerely, someone with a Bahncard 100 who sometimes gets home faster by not being stuck in a broken ICE at the airport, and instead taking the S-Bahn :D

5 minutes will definitely - not - be enough from long distance track to regional track. Better calculate with 10 minutes to be on the safe side - especially if you carry more than just hand luggage and/or need to buy a ticket ...

I think I did it *once* in five minutes with a mid-sized bag because I wanted to catch a connecting train, so I ran (I frequently travel from the North-West to Wiesbaden via the airport because it's much faster than the old tracks on the western side of the Rhine via Mainz). Couldn't have done it with more luggage.

And if the S-Bahn is not running, which may happen regularly, take the U-Bahn to Südbahnhof and the X61 express bus to the Airport. U-Bahn trains to Südbahnhof come every 3 minutes and the bus leaves every 30 minutes. Takes you to terminal 1 in about 20-30 minutes.

Or there's also a regional train that takes you to the Flughafen Fernbanhof every half hour from Süd and that works with your RMV ticket same as the bus. It's yellow and delightful and helped a lot during my layover when the tracks around the S-Bahn were still messed up from that storm in February.

Yeah, though, only the lines U1, U2, U3, and U8 (A-Route) go to Südbahnhof. But If you start your trip to the airport with, say either U4 and U5 (B-Route), or U6 and U7 (C-Route), you have to make sure you change to the A-Route at either Willy-Brand-Platz (B- to A-Route), or Hauptwache (C- to A-Route). That is, _only_ if the S-Bahn has completely shut down, and all that is available are U-Bahn and busses.

As of today Google Maps finally includes Frankfurts S-Bahn, U-Bahn, Tram Lines. A lot of bus lines are still missing or have mistakes but this shouldn't affect the average tourists and will hopefully be fixed in due time.

It's a well connected airport. Long distance trains to Amsterdam, Bruxelles, Basel beside Germany. But coming from North (Hannover) of Germany is better to change in Frankfurt Hbf, and use the next available train from there. Also as u mentioned many local cities are connected directly by local services. Often you can skip the Hbf. Tickets for RMV tickets are available in the DB app as well. But in Germany it's usually valid immediately when bought!

The way down to the S Bahn station under Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is a bit confusing. There are signs that lead you in the two directions the S Bahn is travelling. This is needed because they use different platforms. One sign ins written "City", the other is "Messe". This is rather confusing because the Messe actually is pretty much inside the city.

Last trip to Frankfurt airport it was in a mess of construction, that has been close to 6-7 years ago. Planning non returning within the coming year, and hope it is back to somewhat normal, yet Frankfurt is always under construction since when I lived there in the 80’s.

I recommend to take a day ticket or group ticket. Then you can drive back and forth all day and don't have to worry about zones and transfers. The mobile app is good too. Above all, this shows the transfer options and necessary trains. If you have a car, I recommend looking for a P+R parking lot in the outer area and then using public transport.

I once was invited to a business meeting held on site at Frankfurt Airport in November or so. I flew in a couple days early and spent two days in MAINZ. Among other things, MAINZ has an incredible church with Marc Chagall windows and an incredible Gutenberg museum. I also made a local train side trip to Weisbaden which was quaint. Once you've landed in Frankfurt and made it downtown to Hbf, you'll want to directly take the subway U5 in direction Preungesheim to Hauptfriedhof where you can visit Prof Dr Alzheimer's grave on the south side of the cemetery. If you're up for more tourism, there is a big cinema museum on the south bank.

And in the historical centre of Frankfurt you´ll find the so-called "Kaiserdom" = Emperor´s cathedral, which was the Election Place of the Emperor´s of the Holy Roman Empire during centuries (the "Römer" = the name of the medieval City Hall is also remembering to this part of the history).

Small correction: The red machines in the station ticket office will actually not sell you RMV tickets. Instead, you have to use the green ones shown in the video. The RMV actually contracted another company (not DB) to run the ticket sales, so DB legally can’t sell tickets from the machines.

nice video although you failed to mention that the RB58 towards Laufach or Rüsselsheim Opelwerk (but you would just get the s bahn if your going that way) stops at the Fernbahnhof and not the Regionalbahnhof which although runs at 1 hour frequencys if you are going towards Laufach will probably be the best option

One thing that confused me a bit when using the S-bahn recently was what I needed to do with a Kombiticket I received for an event I was attending. I wasn't sure if I needed to redeem it for a proper ticket, get it stamped, or do some other special thing to use the slip of paper I received. Yup, just having that slip is perfectly fine. Tickets in Germany in general are valid from the moment they're paid for. An exception may be day tickets which you can buy in advance for later days. Those are valid only on the specific days that are shown on the ticket.

@@dorderre the same is true for those Kombitickets, which for example include the public Transport ticket with a ticket for a concert or a fair. Those are usually only valid for the day the main ticket is valid. sometimes (this may regionally depend on the public transport organization) they are also only valid a limited time before entry time for a concert for example. The tickets usually should either hold this information or a link to such information.

One says group day ticket and the other says group day ticket with airport. For that you need the one with the Airport. The Airport is in a different zone (5090) from Frankfurt itself (50), so even for the travel to the city you do technically need the one with the Airport included (although the journey is fairly short, so you can often get away without the right ticket, but it is not legal, and thus not recommended). And be a bit carefull to read basically everything when using the RMV-Website untill you're used to it, it can at times be a bit confusing regarding what important information is highlighted, and what is almost hidden in a detailed dropdown or behind a link.

But be carefull with the long distances, as the 9€-Ticket is not usable for ICE, IC or EC-Trains, so for the long distances you'd need to use RE and RB-Trains and swap Trains a couple times. However currently it's not set in stone, as it's not even clear in all places where you can buy one, the safest places atm seem to be the DB-App and the DB-Centers, but some places (Munich) are already planning to sell them at ticket-machines, so things are going to change untill it is valid, and when it comes to how to get it, probably even after that.

There's a slight correction I'd like to suggest, if you don't mind: Frankfurt Airport isn't exactly "outside" the city, but is actually a fully fledged city distritct, unlike most airports in Germany, or perhaps even around the world. This little detail also explains, why Frankfurt is regularly in the top three of Germany's crime statistics, as crimes commited by transit passengers at the airport are counted into the city's over all crime statisitcs.

You're technically correct if you are specifically talking about the official administrative boundaries, although of course runway 07L/25R and most of runway 18 are in fact outside of the city limits, as well as a few ancilliary buildings (one maintenance hangar is mostly in Rüsselsheim, except for its north-west corner) and a parking lot. If you want to split hairs, you have to say that _most_ of the airport is in Frankfurt. However, that's not helpful for travellers, for whom administrative boundaries are almost completely irrelevant. For them, "the city" is the contiguous urban area where most people live and work. The airport is located close to the town of Kelsterbach, but is separated from the urban area of Frankfurt by a small forest; tell them the airport is "in" Frankfurt and then put them on the S-Bahn, and they'll panic when they look out of the window and see nothing but trees.

I do wonder if Germany will ever get a similar public transport system as the Netherlands: one ov chip card that is valid for all trains, metro, tram, busses, etc, from all providers in the country. If you have a travel pass for one specific type of transport from one provider, you can load it on your card and it will give you the correct price when you check in. I get a 40% discount on train tickets if I travel outside of rush hours and I get a discount if I travel by bus in one particular region. At the end of the month, I get an invoice. But I can also choose to use my chip card as a debit card and pay a certain amount upfront at a ticket machine.

This would be a very beneficial improvement. The problem is that Germany is split up into a number of regional tariff associations and travelling between them or just using the long distance network is relatively expensive (Because of the longer distances between the major cities compared to the Netherlands. For example, the rail distance between Hamburg and Munich is over 600 km long; more than twice the distance between Groningen and Maastricht). But it would indeed be helpful if they would at least use a common chip card ticket.

The ticket is valid on all bus, tram, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, RB and RE services. For the period of its validity you can make as many transfers as you need to.

Now I'm wondering if I did not break the law when I went there 20 years ago? I'm pretty sure I thought my German Rail covered the train I was on. I believe it was a local. It had a glass partitioned first class area. It was jammed with people, but I had a 1st class ticket so I sat all by myself with my luggage watching everyone crammed into the rest of the car. I got off at Frankfurt's main station and switched trains to Mainz. Does the local line have a 1st class section? It seemed unlike the other DB trains I took in the country. It was more like a subway train, except for the glass partition.

Yes, S-Bahn trains do have 1st class compartments. The S-Bahn is part of the commuter rail network, which means you can use either local public transport tickets on them or long-distance tickets. But if you were going to Mainz, you could have done that straight from the airport: the S8 goes through Mainz.

@@rewboss Thanks for that explanation. I landed in Germany with no real destination for 9 days. I went to Frankfurt and the area near the train station was a bit seedy, it seemed full of foreign beggars and scam artists. The police and a RR station employee grabbed a Middle Eastern man who was harassing me over I have no idea what, he just knew I was American. Not the best welcome to Germany. It was all a bit intimidating, so I thought it best to go elsewhere and chose Mainz as my first destination. Things improved greatly after that. About a week later I returned to Frankfurt and realized if you walk a couple blocks the neighborhood improves greatly and so I walked around 'Manhattan on the Main." The train station staff in Frankfurt were all very nice, even walking me to where I could stow my luggage, refusing any tip, and chasing away yet another pan handler who latched on to me as we were walking to the lockers. I basically wandered around Western and Northern Germany on my trip with no real destination. I stayed in Bremen's old city area most of the trip and took day trips from there. Frankfurt was the only place I had any concerns. It was fun, but if I go back I will plan out my trip better!

@@lmyrski8385 Manhattan on the Main - Frankfurt is indeed inofficially called Mainhattan :D Yes there are certain streets in Frankfurt (especially near the main station) where I would strongly advise against strolling along at night if you have an aversion to live demonstrations of the use of heroine needles, but in general it's safe to go wherever you want to.

Just to let you know the world’s newest airline launching in 2034 will fly out of Frankfurt airport terminal 3 and if other airlines operate out of that terminal, some of them are going to have to move!

Tickets that have to be stamped have somewhere a space for the stamping. With one or two arrows and a notice "bitte entwerten" or "hier entwerten". Sometimes also in English "please validate". And note that you must stamp those tickets only once. Any further stamp would void the ticket.

I don't get why Hahn even gets to call itself Frankfurt Airport.. it's a whopping 160km away from Frankfurt, and the train connections to Frankfurt City are so abysmal, you'd be better off chartering a connecting flight in a Cessna.

Frankfurt-Hahn, being the fifth largest air freight airport in Germany, was in fact called Rhein-Mosel-Airport before. The name Frankfurt-Hahn was especially preferred by Ryanair to get more publicity, which even lead to legal proceedings between Lufthansa and Ryanair, due to „false advertising“. But Ryanair, which shifted their fleet from Frankfurt to Hahn again recently, obviously managed to keep the name. Until 2009 FRA-Company Fraport also had a 60% share on Frankfurt Hahn. The train connections to Frankfurt City are in fact so abysmal, that they are not existent (at the moment) - but there are 10 bus lines, also to Frankfurt City which use the well build road network leading from the airport. Air freight is strongly increasing at the moment with new investors and companies around Hahn and also in regular civil aviation Hahn is regaining a lot of traffic recently. A lot of people, even from Frankfurt actually prefer to fly from Hahn to destinations like London, Palma or Rome, due to less crowding, inexpensive parking, shorter waiting time and minimal walking distances.
