Firstly, information comes in various forms, electronic or digital data is one form of data and solely what cybersecurity focuses on, which makes it a subset of information security. After all, "cybersecurity" will not help the vaican secure its scrolls they absolutely want to keep confidential in their backroom cabinets. Secondly, cybersecurity is not IT. They are miles apart. IT folks don;t know security. I come from IT and software engineering and did not know cybersecurity until I actually went into it. IT owns and runs the infrastructure, IS (information security) advises, audits, and reports on what IT does. Hence why the CIO and CSO are ideally on the same executive level especially so IS can be objective in its work and both report up. Thirdly, folks intending to sidestep the foundational knowledge to information security will not do well and are not needed in this field. People who embrace the process to attain the necessary background first are who are neeed and do well. "Being able to talk" isn't enough. I've heard people open their mouths and made everyone wonder how they got here and next thing they're thrown out. Further, it's interesting when people claim you can get into cybersecurity without the necessary tech background. How do you know how to secure data when you have no clue what data is or the underlying media where it resides or how it moves and how it can be encrypted as it does. "IT" background is not the requirement. It is a "tech" background, which can be IT, software development/engineering, database architect, etc, I've heard it from recruiters over and over again that they are having to weed out folks who don;t have the background because many people are following this same advise. People g get cybersecurity college degrees only to find out that they still need the experience and certs. Jumping straight to cybersecurity is esentially trying to sidestep the tech experience. Computer Science is a degree that will give you the foundational introduction in various areas in tech. A college where I worked as an IT personnel, where students were taking cybersecurity degree courses without the requisite tech background srtuglled through it. When your techer uses technology tersm you have no clue what it is or does and you want to be charged with securing it is a joke! I've seen people who worm their way in get thrown out after being found out that they don't have the necessary background. These ridiculous messages need to stop. You can't secure what you have a knowledge of!

I get a free voucher for each but wasnt sure which ones to focus on first. No degree but I have college experience. No professional IT experience but I love tech, great communicator, I am a published author and everyone always remarks about how I should be a teacher. I love the cybersecurity field and would love to work more closely with the standards and policies sector and writing/creating /presenting material for companies for awareness training. From your video getting a background understanding of networking would help as a gateway into cybersecurity. Im very excited as this video gave me some great clarification. Awesome news. This talk will help, but since you are going risk management, may i suggest to beef up your ability to crush the interview, take a look at NIST CSF and get little familiar. Its getting a lot of adoption for cybersecurity frameworks which helps manage risk. It may help out if you casually speak to it like a boss in the interview. :-). Before, I begin...many moons ago, I was an Electrical Engineer major and changed from Differential Equations (I like this course) to advanced writing (Investigative Journalism and Public Relations) and then joined the National Guard as Infantryman (MOS: 11B).... Anyhow, I got second Bachelor's in World History from the Army and my first 1 year of Masters in International Relations and Conflict Resolutions... As time passed, I got interested in Law Enforcement- Well, I became a State Trooper, and Military Veteran and got my Masters in Criminal Justice and now in Cybersecurity... Thus, I am intrigued and interested to become a Cybersecurity professional to protect people through private companies and/or by civil service... Also, I build gaming computers or PCs as a personal hobby... Gaming is a great hobby- well if time allows it due to family responsibilities... Therefore, Doc, what do you recommend for me to do? I like the idea of SOC Analyst and Pentester ( I like writing reports)... Please, advise, and let me know.. Thank you, and be safe out there. 😎🖖👍🤜🤛

Best info I've seen. Where would an experienced technical software tester with management experience fit in the cybersecurity space? BS & MS in CS. Big picture thinker, connect the dots. Enjoys snooping, problem solving, learning, data.

Do you want to keep working with software or get away from it?
@SimplyCyber3 жыл бұрын
My gut reaction pentesting . Depending on what type of software you could focus there but the point is you have experience finding issues in software. Take it one small step fwd and that’s pentesting. You kind of already have a chunk of The core mindset

@@SimplyCyber Thanks for the reply and advice. I've lightly touched on security type testing in my career. 2 factor authentication for a bank, sql injection, hardware and software testing for touch terminals, RFID technology, DR, etc. I'll look at the resources you've provided and try out pen testing.

Thank you for this video! Very helpful. I graduated during the pandemic with a degree in cyber security. I had a internship on the hook and it was canceled due to covid... I have not been able to find a job. No professor at college pushed us to get certs. No one talked about how important they are. I find this ridiculous. Its like going to school for a Professional Pilot degree and graduating with ZERO pilot certificates and trying to get a job as an airline pilot. Idk about other colleges but at least mine needs to focus on helping students get certs so they are more marketable when they graduate. It sucks how little college experience gets you and yet as a younger individual society pushes so hard for you to go get a degree.

Hi Gerald this gives me huge confidence thank you so much. I just enrolled into the Bachelors of Cyber Security and being a completely non computer based literacy background apart from checking emails and usual internet browsing this out my mind to ease that I don't need to learn C program and all those scripts. Which I have been doing online tutorials and been trying really really hard to wrap my head around those programs to make my education easier. Would you have any tips in regards apart from this excellent video. Thanx mate

Thank you for this information. I do have skills on MITRE & ATT, I understand defense in depth, and more, I do have Sec+, CEH, and splunk certificates and about a year of cyber sec apprenticeship but what I have realized is that not having a cousin or a friend in the cyber sec. industry it's almost impossible to get a job . My certs are about to expire without getting any cyber sec job.

Regret to hear you have all the skills and pre req and still haven’t broke through and think it’s a spoils system. I assure you there is some of that but it’s about 5% and not nearly the norm. Have you tried engaging folks in industry and build a network? I find half of jobs are from who you know not who you are related to. Not a fair field but more accessible than birth right

@@SimplyCyber The only way I engage w/ folks is through LinkedIn, some recruiters (about 15) can view my profile on a weekly basis but still don't contact me.
