I was a Software Engineer in Zurich (i just quit my job to become an entrepreneur). I started with 89000 CHF/Year as a Junior. Last Year i was earning 110.000 CHF/Year after 6 years of Experience. I could easily get a Job between 120.000 CHF/Year - 130.000 CHF/ Year as a Senior Software Engineer.

As a Senior Software Engineer in Zürich I can confirm, that these salary ranges are correct. If you are fresh from university, then I would highly recommend not to accept a job that is offering less than around 84.5k, with 40h week and 25 days of holiday per year. This is the typical minimum salary for someone with a Master Degree (and around 80k with Bachelor). I have seen Junior Devs accepting sometimes way much less and then looking for a new job after they found out how much others in the same company make. My advice to you: Even if you are tending to be less self-confident, be aware that the others that are applying to the same job only have the same skills than you. Even the Googlers dont know much more than you when you are fresh from Uni. My experience is that the Googlers most often know much less. Their only skills are to sell themself well, be confident, to memorize useless interview questions well and they have the persistence to get into such a job. So, dont underestimate yourself, be confident and also ask for a salary of at least around 85k. If you are accepting less, then it is your own fault, because HR will pay as low as they can get it.

Great comment, very useful especially for juniors. I am a senior software engineer with Masters degree, fluent in German and would like to get a job in Switzerland. The problem is, the job offers that I get are around 120-130k. How do people get salaries over 160k? Are there any companies except the big five?
@metinEsturb
@metinEsturb 8 ай бұрын
@@filippoboiani1386 It really depends from company to company. In my current company you get the full salary paid out without any bonus or option. It is being divided by 13. 1/13th is paid out every month from Jan to Nov and 2/13th are paid out in December. This also called the 13th salary (13.Gehalt in german). In other companies the split between salary and bonus is around 85:15 to 90:10. At least this is what I experienced.
@metinEsturb
@metinEsturb 8 ай бұрын
@@filippoboiani1386 Cost of living in Zurich is extremely high. If you are sharing an apartment then you pay at least around 1500 CHF per month for rent. If you want to live alone then you can calculate roughly around 1000 CHF per room. This is very rough. Then you can also expect at least around 400 CHF you have to pay for healthcare insurance. These numbers are very rough and you can also get cheaper options if you are lucky.

This is a great video. Moreover, you have to put this into perspective with the cost of living in different cities. I live in Paris, where the cost of living is roughly 29% lower than in Zurich. But the salary is almost half, therefore getting a 25% decrease in quality of life. For someone living in Barcelona, the salary is 55% lower, but the cost of life is also 51% lower. The best ratio whn it comes to onsite jobs still belongs to Berlin: salary is 40% lower, but the cost of life is 60% lower than in Zurich. When it comes to full remote, I'd highly suggest working for a Swiss company, and being based in south-east Asia (Living in Bali is roughly 3 times less constly than living in Switzerland)

You can also work in Zürich but live 30 min away in Zug where you pay less taxes. Or you live close to the border in Germany and have lower costs of living (but higher taxes as you live in Germany). So, it's best to keep taxes in mind for every combination.

I have almost 2 years of experience with a bachelors degree in computer science and I'm an EU Citizen. I also speak fluent English but not German/Italian/French. Most jobs that I find (Indeed/LinkedIn/Swissdevjobs/Jobeo/Grabjobs/and many more..) require at least one of the "swiss" languages, and the english only jobs have always hundreds of applications and a LOT of competition. Market is a bit hard to break into right now but hopefully next year it will be "easier" 😅🙏

The salary information they share in the video is very accurate. As a software engineer you earn a reasonable salary, but most of the time you don't earn like a lawyer, a consultant, a financial expert or a doctor. As a software engineer you belong to the mid-to-upper part of the swiss middle class and nothing more. It is not completely impossible to earn more but very rarely. If you want to get a super high-paying job STEM is not the right thing to do.

@@rh2872 I don't think so. I doubt that the "Fachkräftemangel" is as big as the companies claim. This starts with the ridiculous job interviews which often consists of multiple rounds over weeks or even months, assesment-exercises that need 3-9 hours to solve them - for a boring and not very difficult programming job... The salaries are not super high and in the average you need 9 months to find a new job as a developer in Switzerland. The companies can just do that because they have so many applicants from all over the world. They have no interest in educating their employees by themself, they just can look for the "Wollmilchsau". The job of a software engineer is completely overrated, mostly it is boring, you have nothing to say, and will never make a good career. If you want to become rich and powerful it is still the same as 20 years ago: become a lawyer, a specialized doctor or a finance specialist. Another sad thing: A big part of software engineers made a master/phd in physics, math or electric engineering, in this time the people sacrified most of their personal time to ETH or other universities. most of them are extremly overqualified for a simple programming job like "create a new red button". There are too many academics, too many immigrants(i can understand them) and too many companies that advertise jobs for which you needed an apprenticeship in later times and today a master degree.

Hi Claudia and Jan! Thank you for your analysis and the video! 😊 I am a Senior Software engineer in Stuttgart and made a research how much I could earn in Switzerland with my job. Unfortunately I was disappointed because the max was 150k and as a consultant, normal jobs were around 120k. How is it possible that it is so low and that there is such a small difference between a Junior and a senior? My current salary in Germany ist 108k. I come from East Europe and a Junior earns around 1200€, a Senior around 3500€ netto, while the average country salary is 1000€, so IT people have really a lot of money in comparison to other jobs. How come people in Switzerland accept to get barely more than somebody who didn't even finish 10 classes?
@amaridev
@amaridev 8 ай бұрын
Yes, this surprises me as well. But you still have the benefit of taxes. With 150k in 12 months, you have net 6.806,17 Eur / Month in Germany, while in Switzerland with 120k in 12 Months you have net roughly 7.619,73 Eur per month. I'd say it's still worth it, but of course the benefit shrinks, considering the higher living costs. For jobs with lower income, there is also the rule that you should earn 2x as much as you get in Germany. The higher your salary, the less this rule works out it seems.

Daca as gasi un post peste 160k m-as si muta in cateva luni. Dar de unde? Am prieteni romani in Zürich si fix atat castiga ca programatori seniori, 120-130k cum zic si astia in video. Imi poti da un pont unde se castiga 200k?

Law of supply & demand. Everyone wants to be in IT, so the supply is too high. Less people want to do manual labor, so traditional manual labor jobs are increasing in salary. Lots of medical workers died during the pandemic, so it's a good field to get into in the near future.

I think the salaries of swissdevjobs are too low. Medians around 100K for Seniors in many of the roles are by far too low to make Switzerland attractive. You gotta move towards 200K as a very Senior (10+ years experience) or manager and according to Swissdevjobs that would be practically impossible. However at below 200K it at a very senior level it would make more sense to leave Switzerland altogether and move to America. So obviously that is not true. Further I would not recommend anyone to move to Switzerland at less than 100K, not worth it at this level, there are better options.

Unfortunately my experience tells that 120-130k is the norm for Seniors. I basically have all necessary skills: 10 years of experience, Masters degree, fluent C1 level in German and English, still young and eager for challenges and still didn’t get any offer over 130k as an employee. Definitely unattractive for such an expensive country as Switzerland. Do you know any trick where to find jobs over 150k?
@rh2872
@rh2872 8 ай бұрын
@@Micha-bp5om Multiple factors: 1. You don't always get great offers from Day 1. Sometimes you need to stick with the same company for a few years to get an amazing salary. So staying 3+ years is generally one ingredient. By far not a guarantee though. 2. Data science, ML, AI is more requested now than many others skills. There are more examples of course. But for some roles there is more talent to hire instead of you, meaning your salary goes down. 3. Being a fire fighter in consulting usually pays more than having a more predictable product development job. 4. Since the pandemic is over, the suits want people to sit around in the office again and pay you extra for doing that. In short: As a consultant with the same company for many years (or your own), focusing on data science/ML/AI you can make significantly more money than in many other developer roles. And if you show up in an office regularly, it can be an additional bonus.
