As usual a very interesting video. It really is a window into another world. Canada has some wonderful independent schools but nothing like Eton. We chose to send our daughter to a Catholic independent school here in Vancouver although we are an Anglican family. She has told me she really enjoyed the experience.

You can't differentiate an Etonian accent. ... At 13 their accents are partially set, and different. They mostly end up with a fairly affluent-sounding RP. But it isn't different from the accent of a boy from Winchester, Harrow, or Charterhouse.

When I first learnt of Eton College at the age of twelve I must admit I initially hated the whole idea of it. I couldn't believe a small number of boys of my age were going to have such an education. I did not want to believe, and could not believe, that such an education was going to continue for my generation too. Just as it had done so for countless generations of boys before us. I couldn't understand why all the adults and wider society wanted it to continue. I couldn't understand why Eton College had not been and wasn't going to be abolished. Could not the adults see how unfair and unjust it was? Couldn't they see how wrong it was to give a first class education to one boy and a second rate education to another boy? Couldn't they see how such schools were going to perpetuate inequality between us as children? That the class system was going to continue if you give to some boys an advantage and privilege within education. It is difficult to explain, and as a teenager I never thought I would say this, but as you become older you slowly (if somewhat grudgingly and quite reluctantly) begin to see and to understand for yourself the important role a public school like Eton College plays in education. You begin to understand and to acknowledge the invaluable and incalculable role such a School plays in educating every generation. Even those in my age group. Above all else you also begin to see how special it would be if all of this now continued. Not only for the next generation, but also for the many, many boys who will follow them.
@GeorgeFromIrelandReflections4 жыл бұрын
I am glad that you changed your view. But do not imagine that going to Eton guarantees success.
@cosmicmusicreynolds32662 жыл бұрын
This class education only suits a small privileged elite. who does this benefit , as you gave a strange ambiguous response whuch sounded more like a guilty conscience to begin with. The problem with this type of education it does nt not expose any of those who experience it to qny other type of learning other than a minority born to rule. to givean example of how figures to Oxford have dropped from academy , state schools etc. Class division in eton is there and it shows.
