I am an 8th grader and Harvard is my dream school. I watched a ton of vids on how to get in, and this video really really helped me set a goal and thoroughly understand what is required. I read all of CollegeVine's articles too because they are super helpful. Thank you so much for this video.

I really envy you for starting to think about what colleges you will apply to so early! I'm currently a senior in high school, so I am currently going through the application process. There is so much I wish I had done differently during my high school career that would make me a stronger applicant, but unfortunately, college was never at the forefront of my mind. The best suggestion I could give you is to continue researching the kind of things that make people strong applicants, perhaps some unique clubs at your school, and other interesting extracurriculars that you are passionate enough about that you can commit a substantial amount of time to them. Of course you never want what you are doing outside of school to negatively impact your ability to get good grades, but getting involved with a handful of things will prove to be really beneficial for you. This is especially true for activities you are committed to for more than a year (or even better, since the start of high school). Colleges like seeing that you can commit yourself to things and also commitment shows passion. I hope maybe you'll see this and get even more inspired to get involved in your community and chase your dreams. If you start working now, I think you'll not only have a fantastic future but a ticket to Harvard.

I'm out of high school in 3 years so I don't have a strong connection with high school teachers anymore. Can I ask my bosses (working in several companies) for College Recommendation Letters?

I work as a state lead for outreach for one social justice/activism organization and am on the state policy and outreach teams for another, would these be considered tier 1 activities? Both are fairly well-known organizations.

My parents work a lot and I spent most of my time taking care of my siblings. Last year I didn't really get the chance to get into any club and it was my freshman year. But I've started writing books and working on science competitions can I still count on those?

Hi Katy-yes you can! Since you're only a sophomore, you still have time to get involved in more extracurriculars or further develop the ones you're currently working on.

I have a question... that is...I used to learn painting for 5-6 years and I stopped that 3 years back, and I had given 3 exams(every consecutive years)... So, the question is, is this gonna count as an extra-curricular activity ????... (I'm from India, studying standard 11th)... pls answer...

Hi, when applying to regular decisions if I got accepted to some university can I reject them all? An I obligated not to commit nor enroll?
@rue2599

If you apply regular decision you have the freedom to reject college offers. But if you apply early decision or early action, you must attend if accepted. It's best to not apply early action or decision to a college you're not a hundred percent certain you want to attend.
