I think there exists an area between the pointy students and those with an interesting story that might have a pretty good chance at the Ivys. The kids who write books, who head charity and awareness campaigns, who really get their names out there; they demonstrate drive and potential while also creating a hell of a good story for an essay. Not to say that's an easy feat, of course, but it allows you to be pointy (do an exceptional thing without being naturally exceptional) and interesting (witness unique life circumstances without being born into them). I'd say your best bet in such low odds is to find some sort of unique accomplishment that will stand out to an admissions officer (something beyond a 4 year commitment to the debate club or student body president title).

It's true, Ivy Leagues may be an accomplishment-but in retrospect, the student loans can ruin lives. They are becoming more obsolete (financially speaking) as our economy grows. I recommend people to focus on applying to state schools because you can room and board with a fraction of the financial burden. In the short term, prestigious schools might convey an intense yet fulfilling college experience. In the long term, however, the private school loans do not compensate for the short term. If you come from money, power to you-go for it! For the middle class and lower, state schools might provide you with a safer future, with loans you can handle. Still, you should try to get stellar grades out of principle even if you do intend to go to a state school. Of course, there are scholarships for many Ivy Leagues, I just know a lot of students don't think about the loans until it's too late because they become mesmerized by the college experience.
@klondikekanika
@klondikekanika 6 жыл бұрын
I think the thing to look into is how big the college's endowment is. Part of the endowment helps fund financial aid. The more financial aid the college provides, the more aid that the student is able to receive. Because of this, elite colleges, those that have very wealthy alumni who donate to the college, are capable of offering even more aid than a state college.
@joshmakesdrinksandjokes
@joshmakesdrinksandjokes 6 жыл бұрын
Meredith Grey if you’re lower middle class and lower, ivies cost less than your state school most of the time. This is a harmful viewpoint that discourages the people ivies are trying to reach out to the most from applying
@KylesBestvideos
@KylesBestvideos 6 жыл бұрын
heyitsjoshco It is true that if your family falls in the economic bracket of $65,000 or less in annual income (this may vary), you can receive tremendous aid. However, as far as room and board is concerned, there is typically always an offered student or parent loan involved. I am not saying don't apply to Ivy Leagues; I am saying that it is important for students to weigh their financial situation in relation to their institution of choice. For some applicants, state schools prove to be the solution. For others, their aid at Elite colleges is more than sufficient. It boils down to being aware your options. Students are welcome to apply to elite schools, however if they plan to attend, it is important that they consider the full weight of their decision.

The irony and the myth, private schools give much more financial assistance than public schools.The advertised price tags discourages people from going when they should have gone (those unsure of a direction, if you're getting NBA offers, yeah , screw college). What is actually really dumb is people paying out-of-state tuition because of an illusion/romantic infatuation with the name of a location.
@DrAdrenalineee
@DrAdrenalineee 6 жыл бұрын
If your parents make less than $65k, I think tuition at Harvard is free. So if you think you have the brains, you should go for it. I agree that you should way your options before getting to yes on any one school.

Example: (UW) 3.7->3.8->3.97->_____ (W) 3.75->3.92->4.31->____ My 12 Supplements for Stanford are a healthy balance of passion, intellect, and goofy. (Like 3 essays are goofy, but then 5 are intellectual, 4 are passion) SAT: 1240->1370->1420 (taking it again for the last time for a 1480+) 4+ bands every year + regional and county bands Skrt let’s see what happens 😤😤😤

Slashing Blade Well, Ivy League schools are academically rigorous so admission officers want to make sure that you can handle the workload once you get in. That being said, there are students whose other achievements outshined their grades enough to get them into Ivy League schools. They just struggle a bit more with their academic workload compared to their peers after getting in.

Hey thanks for the vid! Dartmouth question. I have a weighted gpa for each of my last 2 years of high school (junior and senior year) of a little bit more than a 4.0. I took 2 honors courses and 5 regular courses during my junior year, am currently involved in many extracurriculars like robotics, NHS, and many violin related events. Went to Interlochen center for the arts in 9th grade and have many hours of volunteer experience. My senior year (this past semester), i took one honors course and 2 aps and ended up with one b in ap physics c because i never studied or reviewed for tests. Apart from that, i have gotten mostly all A's, some a minuses and like 2-3 b's throughout high school. I got a 30 on the act and I would be the 4th generation to attend Dartmouth (legacy)? My grandfather donated a lot to the institution. I think my essays and rec letters are great. Do you think I stand out? How likely do you think they will consider me during RD admissions process? Thanks!

If ive leagues could gaurantee my success, i would go in a heartbeat and make it my life mission. But ivy leagues don't gaurantee NOTHING. You can only count on yourself and God in the end. Even if you don't go to college you still have to work your butt off to succeed. That diploma is a piece of paper. I could just go to a library everyday and learn everything myself. But maybe i dont want to. Idk all i know is that Ivy leagues can get you connections, but it 100% doesn't guarantee success and neither does an education. What happens after college is what really matters or how you perform while you're in college. Until you know what you wanna do don't spend 1 PENNY on education because before you know it you're gonna find yourself on the streets covered in debt

My parents want me to attend an Ivy League school, but I'm really not down for that. Society paints it as this prestigious institution that will allow you to come out making bank, when I doubt that's the case (under-employment is a very real thing). More than anything, I feel like it would just be a point of pride to say their daughter went to an Ivy League school to study medicine, and sure it could open doors that may have been previously closed....but people aren't necessarily (much less, automatically) "successful" because of where they go but rather what they do. That has to be the case considering only a small population of people attended an Ivy League school, but we still have *plenty* of people who aren't in that population who are living *their* best life.
@vessicagames147
@vessicagames147 6 жыл бұрын
Your parents might have sacrificed a lot, at least mine did to come to this country. They just want to see you get all the opportunities you can get when you go to Ivy League. The thing is the most successful people are the ones who work hard and explore new ideas. These are typically the people accepted to Ivy League schools so it’s just a matter of giving these people tools. If you go to an Ivy League, the experiences you will make are priceless. Surrounded by people who are as motivated as you, with cool interests and talents. Finally, connections. You could be going to school with Bill gates son’s nephews daughter or something. These connections will help you so much later in life, if you decide to start a business.

ammaar janjua I took A LOT of class notes and with that, I made it look aesthetically pleasing so that I would have the pleasure and more focus with looking at them. For motivation, there are a few channels on KZbin that shows how truly beautiful some of the notes are, with minimal supplies. Also, don’t think everything said in the class is everything in that topic. Search up the topic online and learn about the conceptual part and new strategies. Best of wishes, - Ayan

@@ayancaligacal4963 I'm honestly not sure how good your chances are. Obviously you have the grades, but those are just "barrier to entry" devices... as is always mentioned. Your background and ethnicity are favorable to the college process... especially for Ivy schools. With that being said, you haven't listed very many extracurricular activities or pursued passions. Competitions are great, but they are also only small snippets of time within a school year. What do you do day to day after school or over the weekend? If it is just homework, studying and the occasional competition... then I might be a bit concerned. For context, I'm at MIT. I also got a 35 ACT and mostly A's. Some of my high school highlights: I took some college classes at an ivy. I captained robotics and science olympiad teams. I built prosthetic devices and conducted a few research projects surrounding them. Won a few science-based awards. Went to championships with the robotics team. Was on the varsity baseball team. Did a few internships at labs within universities, including one where I got to perform brain surgery on an animal and conduct neuroscience research. With that, I only got into about half the ivies despite applying to almost all of them, with the other half being mostly wait lists. So take my advice with a grain of salt haha, because I don't think my path was particularly conducive to Ivy schools as much as my tech schools like MIT, Johns Hopkins, Cal Tech (which were all acceptances).

Or you can accept that private colleges are inherently elitist, classist, and by their very nature exclude massive amounts of people for not being privileged enough to receive insanely high and unrealistic levels of college preparation. Why anyone would not just buy into that scam but encourage others to is beyond me. Also, a holistic admissions system mean that grades are weighed equally with every other component of an applicant. It is a blatant lie to say that the Ivy League admission system is holistic. If it truly was it would have a much more heterogeneous student population, akin to the UC system in California, which actually truly uses a holistic method.

Hannah And UC is being trashed now and California too. It's almost third world I think it's the only state in the country that passed a law telling people how much water they could use. That's third world.

Hannah also by nature there is an IQ spectrum. That's the real reason a certain group of people go to college. the losers of the world just blame preparation as an excuse for being failures.

The experience of going to an IVY league school, filled with extremely motivated people and so many flourishing projects is something priceless. The connections you will make that will later serve you very well in the future are all extremely useful.

Did you learn anything of any value at Harvard? Would you get a job? I am pretty sure you have very little experience in your field of study. A company will be better served by hiring a B student from a public school but with a lot of working experience.

You’re such an Inspiration, I dream about getting in a Ivy League University 😍 I’m from Belgium I speak French but I simply fall in love with the English language ! And also with American colleges! I’m 16 and gonna be graduated of high school in a year and a half, I sincerely hope that my dream will come true! Listening to you made me aware of the stories I can tell and some others stuff extremely helpful, because I thought I was not more that banal, without interesting experiences but in fact there are. I was wondering if my high level in French could be seen as an asset while applying ? Thank you in advance and sorry for my English, I learn it for 2 years but really making progress for a few months. And what’s SAT ? Good evening ^^
