Don't be a jack of all trades. It's much better to be an expert or grand master in two things. Colleges want a well-rounded class, not well-rounded students. Jack of all trades doesn't result in extraordinary alumni. Experts and pros do. Being an expert often will make up some deficiency in test scores.

Tbh, there’s nothing wrong with being a jack of all trades. I know it’s controversial, but doing things for the sake of getting into colleges instead of trying things out and defining the purpose of your life is pretty much...missing the point of living. Why do what colleges want, instead of what you want?

NOP. Mostly people arent jack of all trades. Do you point me anyone who knows modern history like a professor, who played basketball and doing fitness in addition who knows biology secondly chemistry very well as well as can use adobe photoshop and can built 10 cm scale models of tanks andl draw 3D pictures just by using KZbin? I think no because the person descripted above is me. I can say that ı am well rounded and can do anyrthing I wanted (didnt count cooking and being bilingual) and this is a great thing.

How do I make my extracurriculars revolve around one idea? I do badminton, lots of band stuff, straight As, outside math class, city youth council, and honor society president at my middle school I don’t really know what drives me, I just end up doing my activities to improve my skills 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Ivy Leagues had a Q&A session in my country (Sri Lanka) and someone had brought up quotas, and one of the Ivy Leauge reps said that they don't have such a thing because it was illegal.

I mean I don’t think there is a strict, hard-enforced quota. However, I think there is a clear trend in roughly how many they take for diversity purposes. They wouldn’t just take 100 from the Philippines if historically they’ve been taking 5!

“Senioritis” haha that’s a word I haven’t heard or thought about in a very long time. Thanks for sharing, back when I applied to college (seems ages ago), I also got rejected by 1 and was waitlisted by another (I did get in to the other 5 I applied to), but in hindsight, I think Cornell was a great place to spend my four years as an undergrad, and it is a big part of who I am and I am proud to be a Cornellian.

Too bad. You weren’t applying to a particular university, but you were simply looking for status. I suspect that many of your schools perceived that. You should look deeper at the schools to which you apply. What is it you want and what school is the best fit? When you identify the best fit for you and communicate that in your interview, you will much more likely be accepted to the school you want.

Should my overall theme with my extracurriculars roughly match the IB classes I take? My school offers most IB classes but no all to match my Engineering theme. No offense, but this is boring, not your fault. It is like they want you to package yourself like a screen writer trying to make a ton of money as quickly as possible. A film script without enough personal sincerity. 'Write what they want to hear.' There is a great book written by a student who died shortly after graduating from Yale. Her first name is Marina, the book was probably titled, 'The Absense of Lonliness,' or a similar title. Found it at Target by chance. Really great book, everyone should read it. Notice if you get e-mailed asking if you want to work for banks, all her friends got similar e-mails. March 2019
