Thanks, Interesting approach to the time honoured fast singles conundrum. I note you don’t suggest doing the exercises leading with both hands. From my personal experience I have found that working more with ‘weaker’ hand lead gets better progress when then playing with the ‘lead’ hand.
@ferggriffindrums11 күн бұрын
Hey man, simple answer to this really. So, these are just the 3 best exercises to build up speed ‘prior to ironing out the creases’. The right hand (if you’re right handed), is obviously easier to get going first. Then, upon having a great whip, great bursts, and being able to extend the roll and still get a whip out, it would be a good idea to practice things left hand lead. I do lots of left hand lead stuff and agree with you on the benefit. This is not an ‘everything you can possibly do to improve single strokes’ video, as it would be about 4 hours long or more, but instead, a great way to get killer singles with the easiest, and fastest approach possible. Hope that makes sense 👊

Since last time I always practice my push-pull, continuously with the right hand, speeding up beyond 200 bpm
@ferggriffindrums12 күн бұрын
That’s awesome, man, congratulations. Once you’ve got doubles past 200, there is a huge world of soloing, rolling, and playing rudiments as fills that opens up to you. Enjoy my friend, and well done again! 🫡
@Martin_Bernard12 күн бұрын
@@ferggriffindrums Thanks, I want more than doubles, I want to be able to play very fast continuous singles for long periods of time, some metal guys like Wanja can easily reach 280 bpm that's crazy, I don't even want to play metal, my goal is not speed I just want to improve my technique, push-pull is so tricky it takes years to improve
@ferggriffindrums10 күн бұрын
@@Martin_Bernard That's a great goal to have, man. All I'd say is, when you get to around 280 BPM or other super fast tempos of singles, they are very quiet. The movement has to be so small in order to execute it at tempo that it's hard to hear in an actual musical setting. Drummers in big bands who play like that will often use triggers or have specific micing/mixing setups in order to get those things heard. If you want to play metal, and speed metal, then yes, go for it. Otherwise, don't worry about those kinds of tempos. Some of the best players in the world cannot play singles at 280 BPM, and don't need to. 220 is a good top level. I can do some videos on singles into doubles, and vice versa - there's some good ideas that help with this. But, it does also sound like you could start work on some other rudiments and try to apply them in a fill environment. Happy to help. All the best 👊
@Martin_Bernard10 күн бұрын
@ Wanja doesn't even use triggers ! I can reach 220 bpm but not clean, at 200 bpm it's nice and clean now, and not too bad at 210 bpm, as long as I can feel I can improve I'll go for it, it's a nice feeling, at the moment I only improve my right hand, later I'll have to teach my left hand to catch up my right hand !
@ferggriffindrums7 күн бұрын
@@Martin_Bernard Understood. The volume is still a factor at faster tempos tho. Maybe I should do a lesson on building one's weaker hand.. Thanks again for your comments :)

Great lesson, Ferg. Thanks a lot. I'm just curious as to how many minutes you'd recommend putting into each exercise per day? Cheers.
@ferggriffindrums11 күн бұрын
Hey Ray, thank you. It’s a tough question to answer. Really, this should coincide with your goals, how much time you have, what responsibilities you have that may get in the way etc. The best answer I can give, is for as long as possible. I know that’s vague. I think, with a long enough time horizon, ie keep coming back to it and trying over and over, the results will (eventually) keep you motivated - focus on the small improvements: one bpm is a worthy celebration/something to notice and be happy about. I did used to do these for hours, but I was just so determined to have super fast hands. Let the goals and the results guide you; I think that’s the best approach. If you keep the end result in your head, putting in the time will serve you as getting you closer to the goals. I hope that helps and sorry I can’t be more specific! My practice has to slot into my routine too. And, it does for everyone really unless your life means you can play for 8 hours a day, lol. Best of luck, my friend 👊

Hi! Why not focus on your weak (the slowest) hand? In this lesson both hands grow simultaneous so again the slowest hand stays the slowest and is the one keeping your speed down
@ferggriffindrums5 күн бұрын
Hey man, I answered this in a comment a little further down. Basically, it's a great idea to work on your weak hand, but, if you're strong hand isn't there yet, I'd focus on that first. Once you're feeling good with the right, def focus on the left. At that point, you can just play everything left hand lead because why not! Hope this helps 👊

Um...170 is WAYYYYYYY too fast for a beginner. So is +5 per DAY. It takes WEEKS to get that kind of muscle memory dude.
@ferggriffindrumsКүн бұрын
I know, man 💙 I didn’t suggest starting at 170 🫡 +5 per day is when you’re practicing it really slow.. As I said, when it gets into fast territory, you’ll need to go up in smaller increments at that time. This lesson is beginner focussed, but, it’s also up to you to work out where you are on the timeline/speed-marker. I’d also say it takes longer than weeks for the muscle memory! Hope this helps 👊

All are top level and paid accordingly, tho.. It's the same in drums; getting to the top 1% is one thing - personal preference or subjective taste can then kick in for who you prefer, but the point remains: we still want to make the top 1%!
