If you're not getting WhatsApp notification or other notifications on your iPhone, what you have to do is to go to the settings. Turn on notifications in the app of your watch app. Then, go to your iPhone and make sure your phone notification is turn ON send notifications to your SmartWatch. Thank you.

How to know if your smartwatch is connected... use the "Find Device" in the app and your smartwatch should Vibrate with a ringing phone animation on its screen. You can't reply whatsapp with the watch but you can read and see your whatsapp messages, Facebook messages and the rest.

Watch and phone works together. If you give the watch to your child, and you connect it to phone. Once you and your child are 10 metres apart, the watch will disconnect itself. It will work as a normal watch showing time and date. It cannot work fully if watch is not around the phone.
