Mr. Bennett, I do not know Stephen personally persay, but people I consider family and exfriends do and hold him in the highest regard and that goes a long way in my book. In all the years that Stephen has been producing videos I have never seen him do or say anything that was not in keeping with the highest of values, morals, and character. Having ties to various departments myself, his light hearted humor displayed in the video that got him into trouble should have been seen as simply that, humor. Life is to short not to find humor and happiness whenever possible and anyone who puts their neck on the line for others knows that better than most. It is disappointing to hear that Stephen has been demoted. I hope that that situation is rectified asap. He is exactly the kind of man I would want coming to save one of my family members when the smoke is black and the flames are bright. Your department and community would be well served to have more like Stephen.

Mr Bennett, I don't have the pleasure of knowing Stephen personally but can tell a lot about someone's character through mannerism and actions. When it comes to something as dangerous as firefighting I'd think that any department would be proud to have a willing volunteer ready to risk their lives for others. Please reconsider the actions take against Stephen, I know without doubt that you will not regret it. He'd be an asset in anything he chooses to do in life. Don't rob the residents of that community of such a valuable asset. My biological father was a fire captain for almost 40 years. I didn't know much about his job but I knew it was quite dangerous. the city can request not demand any video that you were not in the role of a fire dept. employee, as your job of mechanic in your own business falls under a different job title it would appear to fall under freedom of speech. but it is tricky because the city has the right not to hire any person they can make up a different reason to get rid of you. start with $250K compensation for every video they want you to take down for the time and effort you put into making clean content with whatever brand of humor you use. I am a firefighter myself and if I weren't paid and were still a volunteer I would have walked out upon the first mention of being suspended AND demoted for something that stupid. Fire departments all across the US are hurting so bad for volunteers they have to be complete morons to do something like that! If you still wanted to be a volunteer you could probably easily move to a different department.

As a Fire Commissioner in a rural district, I am virtually certain that you signed an agreement regarding your behavior when you are seen as the face of the fire department. Essentially you agreed to give up your right to "free speech" in certain circumstances. "Yo Mama" comments would be included in that. YOU agreed to those restrictions BEFORE you were sworn in. Any blame for your behavior falls on you.

@@wrini1 Although I had nothing to do with writing the code of conduct (which is pretty much standard for every FD that I am aware of) EVERY firefighter agreed to it before they were sworn in. Mr. Cox is now being lauded for breaking his word. He can't have it both ways. Do we accept this type of ignoring agreed-upon behavior for police officers? Military members? Elected officials? What is being suggested is essentially anarchy. The rules don't matter, even if you swore to uphold them, after all, "it was just a joke." If you don't want to follow the rules, don't join.
