Did you know that astronauts on the International Space Station send pictures from space to ground over amateur radio that you yourself can get at home using your computer? Let us show you how to get them, step by step.

No one's arguing about that, but ESA can't decide to do so (and wouldn't be able to, monetarily) - only the financial bodies aka the member countries decide on what projects ESA invests in.

Would love to see a demo where the amateur is tracking the ISS with an app like ISS Detector and a portable Yagi, an HT (Handheld Tranceiver) and using an app like CQ SSTV to show the image in real time! 73 de KB8UIP

The tutorial videos are similar to that but instead of the handheld transceiver the audio comes from a web SDR page. It's still being done in real time but is more easily accessible for people because you only need a computer or smartphone.

ESA, I want to become an astronaut. If I get low grades during GCSE times but I improve my grades and do magnicifantly well in college and university, can I still become an astronaut? Because GCSEs don't really matter right? Also, I live in the UK. When will applications be open? (just curious) Also, will you be going to the moon in the year 2024+?
@EuropeanSpaceAgency
@EuropeanSpaceAgency 4 жыл бұрын
There is no simple route, or straightforward list of qualifications - there are no schools or university courses for astronauts, or specific jobs that you should do. Yet you should aim to be the best at whatever you do, and it helps of that is in a scientific or technical discipline. The more skills and experience you have, the better. You should also be physically fit, with an affinity for teamwork and adaptability, fluent in English but good in other languages, possibly with knowledge of Russian. See: bit.ly/HowToBecomeAnAstronaut

I don't understand why there is a doppler effect, isn't the speed of a radio the speed of the light ? So its like negligible
@ronsn8071
@ronsn8071 4 жыл бұрын
No, it's not negligible. The Doppler effect (a purely kinematic effect) occurs in ALL signals that propagate at a certain speed, usually the speed of light or the speed of sound. (But if the signal propagates in a medium, such as sound in air, the state of motion of the medium must also be considered if that confuses you.) 🙂

If you think about individual waves being sent from the ISS; you send one wave and then there is a small amount of time before the next wave is sent - during which the ISS moves quite some distance - so the next wave begins its journey from a different point in space. If you look at this gif from wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler_effect#/media/File:Dopplereffectsourcemovingrightatmach0.7.gif - imagine you're on zero for the y axis and 10 for the x axis - that would be the ISS coming towards you, and -10 on the x axis for the ISS flying away from you. You can see how the waves bunch up or become more spaced out.

6:37 it's a bit misleading having an aircraft with a contrail in the frame at the same time your telling people about the ISS passing from horizon to horizon. Many people will think the aircraft is the ISS and that the ISS emits or creates a trail of something visible as visible light.

@davidhoness6658
@davidhoness6658 4 жыл бұрын
There have a Ku/Ka band IP link that lets them remote desktop onto a PC on ground which IS on the Internet. So no actual Internet traffic is ever going up and down to the ISS, just the desktop graphics of the ground PC they are controlling.
