I started golf 7-8 months ago. Yes I have learned the basics but the biggest thing that really has helped is weight of golf club. I think hips arms etc came about because I could feel the weight of club head. It’s the best feeling when it hit me. Made so much sense.

Excellent lesson, John! Every time my golf swing starts going south, I come back and watch this video. I am constantly bringing tension into the arms or wrists and losing the feel of the weight of the club head. This video always gets me back on track! Thanks so much!!

Darryl, as soon as we lose the feel of the club head, we can get real lost, real quick. Cheers!

Great to hear a modern day experienced and highly respected golf professional, John Dunigan, resurrecting the genius of Ernest Jones' "Swing the Clubhead" method taught over 100 years ago. Yes, nothing is new under the sun. Incidentally, I believe Arnie Frankel is the last disciple of Ernest Jones currently teaching the pure Swing the Clubhead method.

John! I think too often amateur golfers try to manipulate the club more than they should. Rather, they should like at it as a "tool" that is designed to do a specific job and is weighted as such. Surprise! The good shots will then start coming. Great video!!!!
@JohnDunigan

Absolutely! But that may well come under the heading of tool manipulation!

With regard to feel: Here's a thing that I did, and I can imagine has happened to other DIY types: I hadn't played in decades so my lovely old irons needed regripping. I started shopping grips and found out about sizes and went up in size to better fit my hands. I bought the grips, did the job and went onto getting my swing back. The second time I played nine holes since the regrip, I had along a duplicate club from another set just for comparison. I hit a good shot with the regripped club, then grabbed the other one and tried it. Then it happened. In my practice swing my mouth must have dropped open when I said "AHA!" On the first backswing with the all-original club I felt the clubhead all the way back. That's what was missing from my game. My regripped irons were "disappearing" behind me as I swung. The balance was changed and they felt like feathers but I didn't know it from practice and mostly short shots. That's part of the reason my tempo was rotten at that point. The old iron still had the proper swingweight and was a dramatic difference. I had unknowingly changed the swingweights of all my regripped clubs with the larger grips, and more tape. So two rolls of lead tape and a swingweight scale later, they're back to normal and easier to swing. Be mindful of your swingweights. Keep teaching the good stuff. It's all about feel! The more I think the more I miss. SWING!

It’s incredible how it falls into place. When you swing the weight of the club head, the rotation, weight shift, plane all happen naturally.

“Swing the Clubhead” is still the most useful golf instruction book ever written. Bobby Jones (no relation to Ernest) said it was the best way to learn to play golf. John-Kudos to you for sharing this concept.

I would also suggest Ernest Jones' first book, as told by Daryn Hammond, The Golf Swing (Illustrated). It delves into how to create a swing and swing the clubhead with the principal fingers, which Jones doesn't really go into in his following two books.

The moment I turned my focus onto the feeling the orientation of my club face at the point of impact by feeling the weight of the head, my game totally changed. I can damn near point to the direction my ball will travel in a straight line. Finessing the draws and fades is the mission now, but it has become actually possible because I actually know what the head of the club is doing at the point of impact. Focusing on the club head weight and orientation totally loosened up my swing because of a very specific reason. You can’t tune in on the weight and orientation of the club head if your mind is focusing on the grip and swing plane. Once your swing becomes comfortable and relatively consistent (even if you’re slicing the ball), just turn your focus to where and how that club head is and feels and suddenly the slices and hooks begin to correct themselves. Why? Because if you have control of the weight and club face orientation and you’re pointing the momentum of the club weight towards your target, you’re most likely squaring the face at impact. To be very honest, it took a number of large buckets of balls at the range to completely absorb the feeling. But DAMN was it a cool sensation to be able to intentionally direct that ball so accurately. Like I said, now comes the controlling draws and fades and of course, distance. This man is totally correct that feeling the weight of that club head makes a massive difference if you have developed a comfortable swing. But I would add in knowing the sensation of weight as it relates to club face orientation is key. Get that down and your game will change dramatically. Mine sure as hell did, lol. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

I'm a stocky individual with decent strength, do you think a heavier golf shaft would help with this feeling? I just tried it out on the course today with my regular shafts and it was incredible. I can't help but think a little more weight would help even more with awareness

I have 2 5 Iron in the bag, my normal Srixon Z785 shaft is 105 S = distance 180m+ WITH MY NORMAL SWING. and an older Callaway XL Shaft is 130 S= 200m. feel i'ts much heavier , harder to lift in the back swing , but I can feel the head through out the swing and I don't have to swing faster or harder,

Great instruction. I'm sure you've heard this a thousand times but my swing is perfect until there is a golf ball there. Even if I close my eyes. Just knowing it's there completely changes my swing. Super frustrating.

If you swing the club in the correct direction at the correct elevation, contact is inevitable. Remember: you don't hit the ball. The club does. You swing the club!

You don't swing the club, the club swings you. The weight of the club head dictates the swing tempo and rhythm. Trying to force the swing creates tension, and tension KILLS the golf swing!!!
