I don't currently have cable due to the fact that I couldn't find anything that I could reasonably place into my budget. With the information that you have provided in this video, I can now do so! So thank you for the hard work and research you have done :-D this will definitely be a big help to my family!

Supreme information. I would love to cut the cord but I'm getting my ha ha moment with my cable for about six years now. Took one of my cable boxes to my other house and it works under the same subscription. 2 for the price of 1. Great job with the information and presentation. And you were definitely eye candy.

Great video David! I'm a cord cutter going on 3 years and if you're an Amazon prime member you can also get free content via Amazon Prime video. Also, Roku 3 has tons of free content. IMO it's the best content streaming box available. Also, I ran a channel scan on my TV and all broadcast channels appeared without buying an indoor antenna. I don't really know why this worked but it just did. I would suggest doing this before buying an antenna to get broadcast TV first.

Jaime Delgado Thanks, Jaime! Wow 3 years, nice work lol I'm happy with the Fire Stick and Chromecast myself, pretty much covers anything I'd need to do, but I'll have to check out the Roku as well as I have friends with it that love it, too. There must be something to all of you praising it... So I know how that happened and I totally forgot to mention it in the video. Some newer TV's actually have the HD antenna built in from the factory (think I even saw that that was part of the mandate from the government --anything made after X year has to have it installed, but don't quote me on that). Good advice! Will add it to the article for sure. Thanks for chiming in!

Nice job! Many have bits and pieces of this info but this puts it all together nicely for people. So, if I do this, this, this and this and get 4 other subscriptions and do all this other stuff, I can replace one all inclusive subscription (almost) with a bunch of higher bandwidth demanding (prolly driving up the cost of internet) lesser quality subscriptions and save a few bucks? (at least until CEO's see a few dollars to be had ,,, market price has been established.) Who's your ISO?

Question - how do I work a DVR in all this? Can I buy something like a TiVo, hook up my HD antenna and Sing TV to it and have the TiVo record things like I do with my DVR now? Since most shows are available on Netflix or Hulu I'm not really worried about those. My main concern is if I have something to do Saturday afternoon and the game is on ESPN/CBS, I'm going to want to record it so that I can watch it at my own leisure and fast forward past commercials. If I can solve this piece of the puzzle, then I'm sold! Can you help?

This is definitely the way to go if you want to save money which we all do of course. I'm gonna share this with my sister in law who just happened to drop her cable company a few months back. I'm gonna give it a go since I have the HD antenna I purchased at Costco. Thanks for the heads up.

We cut the cable back in September 2014, and haven't really missed it all that much (except Walking Dead). There are enough alternatives out there already, and the offerings are getting better. The drawback is the exorbitant fees the local cable TV provider charges for internet. When all the children in the house are streaming, we go over our limit quite easily, and the overage fees can run up quickly. I think if cable TV services want to survive, they need to offer a la carte.

This was great! I have DirecTV, but unfortunately when I added up 3 options (Sling, Hulu and something else), it wasn't that much less than what I'm paying now. I am ready, though, to cut the cord. Too much money for just basic cable and you have NO signal in the rain!

I was expecting a recommendation for PopcornTime but it doesn't seem to be known all that well. The program can be downloaded on your computer and from there you can stream the latest movies and tv episodes in a matter of minutes; its in HD, you can choose to display captions in a variety of languages, but of course, the best thing about it is that its totally free. Another good app to try is KODI which essentially provides you the same thing, but for some its a bit more challenging to start up.

Yes my parents use iptv but for their own foreign channels. American companies don't offer that here :/

Hi. I cut the cord some time in '11 or '12. I have a Roku XDS- It's one of the older ones- and I have a subscription to Hulu Plus and Netflix. I see almost everything I want/need to on those two subscriptions. My laptop is also older. I bought that in '06 or '07. Needless to say, I need to clean it out because the HD is almost completely full, so it slows it way down. Because of that, I stream everything on my tv or phone. The drawback is that not everything available on Hulu Plus is allowed to stream to a TV or phone/portable device. Some of the content is only allowed to be streamed to a laptop or desktop. I had gotten Chromecast a while back, but it wasn't working that well with my laptop. I returned it with a heavy heart. Lol I still do look for ways to try and find any content I'm missing, so thanks for your info. I did notice that some of Hulu Plus' networks they stream were missing from the list at the comparison site. Obviously, it doesn't stream every single show from all the networks that are listed. There were several other networks, though, (like TLC and Bravo) not listed on the comparison site.

Big problems I see is most people have triple play with their cable provider. You still need high speed Internet and without triple play, it is $60+/month so without triple play, it is a still ~$95/Month versus ~$100/Month Video capture to substitute DVR is a technical hurdle for most.

I like cable, these streaming services are good to but I have and would continue to want to have cable. I want to watch a game or a show I like on the tv in my living room or bedroom on a big screen that I don't have to fiddle with. A tv is something everyone can watch/ see. I sometimes like to have the tv on in the background. I love cable news. In the mornings for example, I don't want to watch the morning shows on a laptop or tablet or whatever device, I want to sit down on the couch and watch the tv with my breakfast. I like on a lazy saturday being able to just casually find a movie I like that happens to be on and watch it. So while these services are great, and they really are I don't mean to diminish them, I still like cable and am willing to pay for it. Another note, you get what you pay for, and pretty soon because everyone wants free things, companies will no longer be able to produce shows because there will be no money to do so or they will have crap production values. And news, I like live news and talks shows and love cable news.

I have cut all ties to the cable companies for 2 years already. And no wifi either. For the same amount of time. I have beef using Netflix, Moviebox, playbox HD, and a antenna for local tv channels I just plug my phone to my tv with AV adaptor and I'm good I use mobile hotspot from my phone to my pc. I save more than 140 a month by doing it this way .... 💰💰💰

I feel as if cable will have a long time run. At tops 20 years. The older people now barely know how to turn on a TV to the right input for cable. Let alone switch back and forth for specific things they want. My grandma refuses to use Netflix because it is too difficult. So given time for tech savvy people to grow up or realize the money saving potentiality they can start getting rid of cable.

+TheUnlockr hey, I'm from Jamaica and wanted to ask a few questions. Like 1) Is Sling TV supported here on the island of Jamaica ? 2) if i don't have a smart tv but have a HD with the HDMI input and i get the Amazon Firestick or The Apple TV (Or Chromecast if and when it is supported) does my laptop or desktop need to be on constantly to stream the stations off my laptop or desktop directly to the Apple TV or Amazon Firestick or (Chromecast if and when it is supported) ? Thanks for the video, it was a great watch. And i hope to hear from you soon.
@ShadowRaver9 жыл бұрын
+Javanni Miller I'll go ahead an answer you buddy. First off SlingTV is an internet product. Therefore, if the island of Jamaica supports internet connections then it will support SlingTv as well. For you second question- Yes, what ever device your streaming off of has to stay on in order for it to stream. It's kind of like asking if your light bulbs have to stay on in order for you to still see the light they're emitting. However! One big thing I'd like to tell everyone here because this video did not mention it! SlingTV only supports one device at a time (as of the time of making this comment 12/18/15)! So if you were hoping to be able to use it for you whole family, you are sadly mistaken. I hope I was able to shine some light for everyone.

Excellent Video. I wrote a google doc on some of these thoughts. Hope you don't mind I shared your youtube video in it. I know it's obvious and common sense, but just want to make a point that people still need to consider internet costs. Also if people have a phone package in their bundle they will need to find some other method to keep their local phone line. Some people with not much technical knowledge or some older folks may think they can totally drop Comcast (for example) and not realize they should have kept the internet, lol. Here is a link to the doc I wrote. docs.google.com/document/d/1zV9r5sPqYx9NwgGEQBT2OA7PzTUyRYTNiTq9HdvLuf4/pub
