The most common clover that homeowners deal with is white clover. This weed grows in patches that get as tall as 8 inches in height. White clover is a broadleaf weed that’s recognizable for its three ovular, or teardrop-shaped, leaves. If you’re lucky, you might find one with four leaves. Each leaf features a white stripe that runs from one side to the other. Other common clover species that grow in larger spaces include red clover, which grows as tall as 20 inches and has narrower leaves, and sweet clover, which grows tall stalks of white or yellow flowers.
Check your lawn or garden beds for any unwanted patches of white clover. Be on the lookout for their broad leaves and white flower heads. Clover is a perennial cool-season broadleaf weed and will grow best during spring and fall when the weather is mild. Be sure to note where you’ve spotted any patches of white clover, as you’ll treat these patches directly.
To kill established white clover, use a post-emergent herbicide like TopShot Weed Killer. TopShot is a selective herbicide, which means it can be applied to most lawns to kill weeds without harming the grass. TopShot can be applied with a hand pump sprayer or a hose end sprayer, but we recommend you use a one-gallon hand pump sprayer to make spot applications to clover patches quick and easy.
If you have a larger piece of property that sees Red or Sweet Clover, use 2,4-D Amine. 2,4-D Amine is a powerful post emergent herbicide that’s great for covering large, commercial spaces.
To keep clover from growing back, you can use a pre-emergent herbicide like Isoxaben 75WG to stop clover and other weeds from sprouting. Isoxaben 75WG is a long-lasting selective herbicide that’s labeled to target broadleaf weeds without harming labeled turfgrasses, including fescue and St. Augustine grass. This is a water dispersible granule that must be mixed with water to be applied. Use a hand pump sprayer to apply your completed solution.

We PURCHASE White clover seeds and apply them generously to the lawn, front and back... the cute little white flowers are a favorite of bees and other pollinators. Prosperity has often been referred to as resting in 'fields of clover'... They are a sign of good luck and good fortune.

Our honey bees are gentle and kind - as they are true honey bees... As a favor you could plant Cat Mint father away from the children's play area. The delightful violet flowers are a favorite for all pollinators, especially so for the even more gentle bumble bees and small butterfly. Cat Mint blooms of lavender-blue, pink, violet, or white. Cat Mint has low fuzzy leaves, wonderfully sweet aromatic gray-green to medium green leaves with scalloped edges. Thrives in full sun to light shade. Blooms in the late spring to early summer long lasting flowers remaining till the fall. Suitable for a large flower pot or directly in the soil along the edges of the garden or property.

I keep clover out of my front lawn but I allow it to grow mostly unchecked in the back yard. Gives us the benefits of clover and still lets us enjoy a weed free lawn out front.

Why do feel the pressure to keep the front “weed free” (though grass is a weed) Is it bc the neighbours that likely have little to no idea about what’s good or not for a garden, may frown upon a lawn filled with bee food clover??

Clover requires less mowing or no mowing, grows with very little moisture (uses a lot less water that normal lawns do) and stays green for most of the year and is great for the environment. Pollinators love it.

@@joephillips6634 No it doesn't lol, it's a nitrogen fixer and grows in clumps so actually fixes soil and crowds out real weeds, it literally also fertilises the lawn for you. Killing White Clover is literally a meme started by lawn/pesticide companies who want people to buy expensive fertilisers rather than just letting White Clover do it's thing. White Clover used to be ADDED to lawns on purpose for it's soil fixing, and fertilising properties before the lawn pesticide and fertilising products came out.

I have to agree with you hank. Clover is a great, versatile plant. It fixes nitrogen which can help fertilize the yard. They are also low growing cover crops that stay short, unlike red clover or dandelions, making them easy to manage. Imo they are a great addition to any yard, just mow them like regular grass

Yes, they are pretty to look at and probably eatable, which I will look into. I love dandilion leaves for my tea and salades. I will transplant some clovers into my wild sections in the garden, but not in my lawn. No, thank you. I live in London, and although the pidgeons love the clovers and I've let them feast on them for a few weeks, but now its my time to take my lawn back. The pidgeons leave poo droppings the size of bjg slugs, and I want to do my 'earthing and grounding' in bare feet with a lot less poo's to tip toe through.. It's each having a garden that we enjoy being in. so its each to their own choices. That's what makes for individual happiness. 🎉

Why on earth do people want to get rid of clover? It's one of the preferred plants for bees, it nitrogenates the soil, helps to prevent crabgrass, requires less mowing, is edible, and the list goes on. I'm adding white clover to my lawn.

Literally because of pesticide/lawn industry propaganda. It's a nitrogen fixer that fertilises your lawn, grows in clumps so fixes soil and crowds out actual weeds. Lawn companies used to add White Clover on purpose because it's a key part to any healthy lawn. When they brought out industrial fertilisers and pesticides, they realised they had products to a problem that didn't exist, hence, the propaganda campaign to make White Clover, "a weed" despite these same companies just a few years before had all lawn mixtures 5% Clover seed because of it's extremely positive properties.
