I'm so thankful I came across your work and your channel via Chloe. I studied business and finance in university, and yet even after I graduated, my personal finances are a mess. I've made some big life changes, including job changes, international moves, marriage, divorce, and a new apartment. Credit card debt is exactly as you said: shameful, embarrassing, and I can't seem to get out of it. Your video was so empowering. It was everything I needed to hear, and I feel like I can trust your experience. I'm going to put everything you said in this video into action. In 6 months (maybe even sooner!), I hope to be debt-free. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I purchased my first home at the age of 21 for $87,000 and sold it for $197,000. My second home, acquired for $170,000, was later sold for $320,000, and my third property, purchased at $300,000, fetched $589,000, with buyers covering all closing costs and expenses.

Credit card debt has been such a shame of mine. I racked up $9000 in less than a year and had been paying so much interest. About 3 minutes into your video I decided to find an extra $100 to pay off my debt. I already paid $200 this month which surpasses the minimum requirement but any extra amount helps. My CC debt is $8700 now... still horrendous and it feels like $100 is nothing in that size but I'm hoping once I get to $8000 I'll start to feel like I've got a handle on it and it's possible that I will pay it off one day... My biggest tip is to call the bank and ask for them to lower the interest rate - mine went from 20% to 3%!!!!

Hi Canna, thanks to your encouragement I set myself the goal of being rid of credit card debt AND having the equivalent amount saved up somewhere so I wouldn't have to keep ending up in credit card debt..and I did it! Thank you…I never thought I could because I don't earn a salary but freelance. Now..to tackle the concept of investing, again, something I've never done before.

Oh. My. Goodness. It's like you were speaking about MY personal situation!! I consolidated my debt, ignored and ended up in twice as much debt! So so glad to hear someone say that paying off the smallest debt first can help, I've been so disheartened with my big debts hardly going down, but I'd always been told to start there. Changing my direct debits NOW to smash out my smallest debt! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

You're lucky to have found this so young! I love my degree and it can get you into an industry (mines biological sciences) but I would recommend being clever about it and not jumping into uni straight away for suuure. Most times if you're vigilant you can get into ANY industry without a degree first...get it later if you want to ADVANCE. I wish I'd known that. Ds get degrees but degrees don't necessarily get jobs lol.

This is so helpful thank you. I am from the UK and my hubby and me have rented for over 6 yrs but now want to buy. House prices are sky high at the mo and therefore so are the deposit amounts and because of renting it is near on impossible. My mum has offered for us to move into hers for a year or so to save which is amazing but first we have a few thousand to clear on CC before we can start saving. Have started selling lots of stuff on ebay (we have to downsize anyway as moving into mums!) and from now any extra cash even if it is £10 or £5 will go on clearing that debt so when we live at mums, most of the time is spent saving for a house. Great videos! Keep them coming!! :) xx

I stepped out of dept with YNAB (wich is a budget software, wich is "teaching how to budget). Budgeting is a key and could (i want to say should) be step 1. I didn't cut my credit card, i paid them, i didn't used them. Cutting them, FOR ME, was like saying to myself : you can't learn / you can't hold yourself from using it so i'll make sure you don't use it. I once throw weed in a trash to force me to stop, and it didn't work. BUT, cutting a credit card or throwing something in the trash CAN help you if events turns on a good timing for you, but might not be the solution for everyone. I wish everyone to be a grown adult with money, cause it can be a great thing (not the best world but...). Thank you for your video! I'm sure you are helping a lot of people out there! :) BTW: I quit weed and quit dept in the same time. Sometimes, it's all about an ultimate choice you have to make inside, but too afraid to do it. Trust in yourself, Trust in your dreams and a lot of pushing FARER your self-imposed limits. :)

Step 7 close your accounts. Call the card company and close the accounts. Then ask them for a new arrangement with the primary goal of lowering or eliminating interest. This will make your monthly payments more effective as all or most will go towards the principal. If you want to keep some, keep the oldest ones to maintain a payment history on the credit report. Some creditors will just offer a lower interest for the asking and some will ask if your in a hardship and ask some basic financials.

All of this resonates with me. It makes so much sense for me. You're so right, if I consolidate, I will be in double trouble, guaranteed, and super stressed out, because my mindset will not have changed. I also like the idea of paying the smallest debt first. I think I would find it really empowering to realise I AM in control of my situation and I am perfectly capable of getting of debt. Sometimes I tell myself "what's the point, I'll never get out of debt". That's because I try to tackle the worst problem first and give up even before I've really tried. I will implement these tips from now on. I think they will help. Thank you so much! Ps. your beautiful roses are singeing

Call the credit card company & tell them the card has been "lost" & you need a replacement with a different #. Keep an eye out and intercept the mail. Call & activate the card. Once it's activated, the old # he's been using will become void/inactive. Then you can hide or cut up the new card.

I am totally agree to pay everything in cash, but in the case when I'm shopping online which I do it most of the times & have to use my Debit card, I feel that paying with Credit card is actually safer in the case that your card got unnecessary charges you can just dispute them. With Debit card, I feel like if someone cyber-ly stealing your number then yo will loose all your money in thin air! Any thought on this? Thank you!

+skyfeatherandbow As someone who works in personal finance I can tell you that you won't be held liable for charges you didn't make regardless of using a debit or credit card. However if someone does steal your card info, I would much prefer they not take my debit card because if that happens, just like you said, my money is actually being removed from the account! Not good. As long as you pay off your full balance to avoid paying any interest I would recommend using a credit card. Builds credit, don't have to pay interest if used responsibly and you can even earn money.

I do have a question. I am currently in credit card debt pretty bad. This has been building up for many years, and I've been really bad about not even trying to keep the interest rates down by transferring balances etc. Before I ask my question let me explain a few things. I have 6 credit cards. Two of them have pretty large sums on them. They are basically half of the maximum on both of those cards. One card I have has a high maximum limit, but it is currently paid off. The other three cards have fairly small amounts on them that I can probably pay off fairly quickly. Now for my question. Should I transfer those larger sums around to obtain zero percent interest for at least a year? This would require doing basically a "leap frog" type of thing where I transfer one large sum from one card to another to obtain the zero interest on another. Then transfer the large sum from the second card, back to the first. Because there's no way that I'm going to pay those large debts off anytime soon. In other words, will I benefit by having this third card that has a high limit on it allowing me to do these transfers? Wouldn't cutting out the interest be helpful? I don't mind paying the debt, because I'm really happy with what I purchased to get into debt. But I do feel frustrated about having to pay so much interest. So paying the debt doesn't bother me. But paying so much interest does bother me.

Problem, most places don't require you to have the card. They can still look you up. Plus online purchasing can be linked to your card.

+jdssurf This is very true. Frankly I don't see how so many ppl can have this strong an urge to use credit so freely. I have never had a bad experience with credit cards. Most of my knowledge about it's downside comes from other people's stories. Personally, I like the rewards which I use as an additional budgeting tool for saving or paying for obligations.

That's how I felt. Then all the sudden I was in over my head. I don't even know what happened to me, their were things I wanted so I could enjoy my life more, things for high end fishing, golf, mountain biking, musical instrument items, I got tired of getting older 40 now, and being single and wanting to live it up before I slow down. Now I gotta pay for it lol. I'll be fine though, I'll just try to hammer on these cards the next year or 2. Tax returns and such bonuses or flipping things on eBay all helps. Yeah so just be careful, it can happen to the strongest of us. Life is odd.

This is very helpful! The hardest thing for me about getting rid of my credit card is that I actually get a LOT of air miles from my purchases. I like to be able to put the items on my credit card and pay it off right away. With this, my husband and I are able to do an additional roundtrip flight each year just with our air miles. What is your view point on something like this?
@SugarMamma

Bailey Evans I think earning points which help you save money on things such as flights is a great use of your resources. But don't buy things just to get points and pay your credit card off in full each month!! xCC

Great Video! I'm getting married in August and I've got a list of vendors that need to get paid off before the wedding. I've paid for any initial deposits already but I'm overwhelmed with the final balance due. I've got a "Life Account" that I'm getting great interest from. Can you suggest if its a good idea to start paying my vendors in installments or do the deposit lump sums 1 month - 2weeks prior to wedding date? Please do a video on budgeting on special occasions. engagement, weddings, holidays

Remember that by far the #1 stealer of wealth is car payments. After a car payment, a phone with a big data plan, and tv payments(cable/dish) most people easily hand over $12,000 per year in hard earned money to pay for stuff they can go without. Very often it's not so much of an insurmountable income problem but a very fixable outgo problem. It takes focus and sacrifice.

Thanks so much for these tips! Like many of the other commenters, I am currently a student with a very limited income, so paying off my credit card has been taking me a lot longer than I expected it would! I am also getting ready to finish graduate school in a few months, and because I live in America I have only six months after graduation before I have to begin making payments on my student loans (which are substantial). I know that you are based in Australia so you might not have a ton of info on how things work over here, but I was wondering if you could make a video about the best way to approach paying off student loan debt? Thank you again for providing us with this free advice!

Found you through Chloe's recommendation :) Awesome video! I'm wondering if you could do a video on saving for students like myself who have to work with quite a small income but still have bills to pay.. Any tips or tricks to keep on track? I just figured out that to save the money I need for a trip I'm planning at the end of the year, I need to put away 50-80% (depending on how much I work) of my pay per fortnight... This doesn't leave much leeway for a little entertainment (ie. nice dinner a couple times and maybe clubbing once a fortnight) especially after paying bills every month :/

This may be a bit contrary, but today is the best time to get into credit card debt, as long as you get a low balance rate. I have have done this over the last few years and used the zero interest debt (basically free money) to buy passive income shares, its awesome
@SugarMamma
@SugarMamma 9 жыл бұрын
+andre tba Not sure if I agree with you on this one…however different countries have different interest rates and policies…but I personally would never use a credit card to buy shares… xCC
@andretba5768
@andretba5768 9 жыл бұрын
To clarify, you don't necessarily have to buy shares you can pay of your home loan. For example, you can do a 40k balance transfer from one credit to another credit you recently aquired, i.e., with zero debt, so now this card as a positive 40k on it, and transfer that 40k into an offset account against your mortgage saving you 40k in interest, whilst you pay zero interest on your original credit card zero interest rate balance transfer for 18 months. The way interest rates are keeping low you might be able to repeat this strategy in 18 months, if not just pay off the card with the cash sitting in the offset account.

andre tba good luck with that. It's not going to be zero percent forever. I know too many people who lost everything betting with leverage. It's dumb. But hey, it's not me doing it. I don't know why you're trying to find validation for this, when you already know what you want to do.
