I have bats in my barn. (Bet you thought I was going to say belfry.) They are great for mosquitoes. But don't hang a bat house on your home. Bats poop like rats and leave droppings everywhere when they fly off. They will stain the side of your house, cement and wood. Put bat houses out away on a tree or barn where it doesn't matter. The bat guano is good for composting.

Great advice... I thought you might mention fly predators- I grew up around horses and it was the best solution my mom ever found to control flies in the barn around the horses. I'm not sure where she got them I think from a feed/tack store or online but they'd come in that packet with some shavings and we would just sprinkle that onto where the manure was dumped. There were still always flies down at the barn, but not so many and hardly any farther away near the house.

I just watched a video where the guy used cutter and other "organic" chemicals for mosquitos. I looked up the ingredients in cutter (which he recommended) and i was very disappointed. It is an irritant and it can get in the ground water. I really prefer your approach- it is healthier and there is no "immunity buildup," to your methods! I like to use things that are safe for EVERYTHING but the targeted pest. Mosquito DUNKS and BITS are awesome. Also, a spray mixture of beer, epsom salts and listerine sprayed on shrubs, grass, bushes and trees at night (never in sunshine) kills the mosquitos but is safe for plants. The beer attracts the mosquitos, the salts dehydrate them. I also usE DYNATRAP with the ATRAKTA attractant scent, and it really works great. It traps them with UV light and co2 and it traps a great deal of them, too! I now have ZERO mosquitos, where I used to have so many, we could not even go out on our deck! We also have a healthy bat population, they are fun to watch as the swoop and dive for this pesky little monsters! So far, no flies or wasps, but I am ready for them! No I need to repel the squirrels and chipmunks!

So Around 2:00 the flies are attracted to the bait but since they got "in" by going under the box to get to the bait WHY are they going to go up through a tiny hole in the fabric into the trap instead of just going out the way they came? Seems like if you turn the box upside down and put the bait inside so they have to get through the tiny hole to get to the bait it might work better. But either way the box would be pretty much the same. Canned cat food with a little water works quite well as an attractant in traps too. Especially once it starts going off.

Bats don't eat that many mosquitos. Go watch them feed at night. They fly far above the height at which mosquitos fly. Mosquitos stay around structures and amongst tree growth, bats fly in open spaces and above structures. I have a bat house and I like bats, but I do not believe the myth that they feast on mosquitos.
@bekkishetter75046 жыл бұрын
This explains why our grandparents used to hang drying peppermint on the screen doors. They said it kept the flies and yellow jackets away. I make fly traps from empty plastic milk jugs. Put some smelly stuff in. Cut a few upside-down "V" near the top, push the V in so there is enough room for a fly or yellow jacket to get through it. Hang it somewhere. If it gets full just toss it in the trash and make another.

I have built bat boxes and got the plans on the internet. I put them about 15' in the air on a post. Bats are very curious creatures and are the best way to rid your area of mosquitoes long term. They will find these bat boxes and use them. Make sure to keep them away from areas that you don't want their guano to be near, due to diseases. I wouldn't place them anywhere near my house or buildings. If there is a light in the distance that attracts the mosquitoes, you can see the bats swoop down eating the bugs.
@bekkishetter75046 жыл бұрын
Put your bat box 15 feet up on a tree will work..protects them from predators. Also, the guano is collected and prized as a great fertilizer in some countries and sold at a premium. If you ever find a baby their are all kinds of recipes to feed it on-line. Very easy to raise. They have very good vision close up and if you ever find yourself in a mass of them; just move slowly and they will fly around you and catch the mosquitoes before they get you. Bats are nice to have around; I have sparrow bats on our property and they eat a lot of bugs in our woods and they also are entertaining to watch at dusk fling around and eating the bugs.
@bekkishetter75046 жыл бұрын
Also; put the bat box on the south side of the tree for winter. We lost a large amount of the population because of a virus that isn't contagious to man; and a major freeze one year. I talked to farmers that were picking them up out of the snow and putting them in the sheds to save them. They fed them antibiotics in water to save the sick ones. Scientist discovered that if we lose the bats and other predator insects we would be overrun by disease carrying bugs in a matter of four days. This would cause major problems for us. This is why it is important to go organic to save our World.

That fly parasite looks like something I could use. I was trying to sit on the patio the other day and they were everywhere. I was completely astonished when a large bee like insect flew into the midst of several fly's that were hanging around a beverage stain on one of the cement pavers. It suddenly pounced on one and promptly flew off with it. It came back twice and flew off with two more. I can't seem to find anything on it as i'm at a loss of what to look for. It was amazing to watch. I do have a pond but thankfully it's full of little frogs I throw in whenever I find one on the property. I haven't had any mosquito's at all this year. Thanks for all the good advice. I'll be looking into some of these products.

I can get up early. Mubakkiran I mean. I don't have a very good conotation with that word since I was raised up in W.Maju Section 2 where the concentration of Chinese is high. My mom used to ask us buy something from the market. I went there with my 2nd sibling. We find cho-lok on the grass. We were children. I always take the food, not to eat but I displaced them somewhere else. Now I feel guilty. We are of different religion. Now my husband put cho-lok for mosquitoes to go away. Irritating. The smell of the chemical compound I mean. I'm not used to it. A-sap I mean.

Bats do not eat many mosquitoes at all. A bat does eat multiples of its body weight in insects on a regular basis, but they eat overwhelmingly large insects like moths. Few species even bother with mosquitoes at all and those that do eat them as meals of opportunity while hunting for moths.
@opcn187 жыл бұрын
They could theoretically, but they never ever do. That figure was developed by dividing the amount of food that they eat by the mass of a mosquito, not actually looking at what they actually eat. In reality no study examining what bats actually eat has ever found more than 1% of their stomach contents to consist of mosquitoes. www.mosquito.org/faq#bats
