for really stingy catchers out there, i use a dark pail/container which I fill with water which I use to water a few plants. Once I see multiple larvae, that is the only time I completely drain the container to water the plants.. while it is not an mosquito but a larvae killer, their reproduction is reduced.

Use beets instead, they contain geosmin which is used to trap mosquitos for research, its at least a hundred times more effective than carbon dioxide or octenol for luring mosquitos, put some beet peels in your bug zapper as well and watch them swarm to it, between the black bucket and the bug zapper, its easy to eliminate a whole cycle in a days time.

I have a tip for gnats that swarm your face. Put on a hat and put something tall in it. The annoying pests actually go to the top of the target (you are the target), and thus will stay clear of your face. I know it sounds stupid, but I tested it in my pasture. It worked. I was stunned. For black flies (biting fly that is bigger than a gnat, and smaller than a housefly) spread a product called “Save the Baby” wherever your clothing ends…collars, wrist, sleeves…as well as around your hairline. They like those protected margins. The product is similar to Vicks vapor rub, but works better. I don’t know why. I tested this in upstate NY and Virginia. It works.

My bird bath gets fresh water daily, just in case larvae were left overnight. A few years ago I added a solar fountain thinking they would not lay their eggs in moving water, but they come out when the sun goes down. So, changing the water daily is a must. Also, I walk around my property and make sure anything containing even an inch of water gets dumped or covered. I will try this solution because with all the rain we've been getting, occasionally things get missed and they are out of control right now. Thanks!

I am soooo going to try these traps out- thank you! And btw, if you get bitten, we have found that a dense paste of baking soda (w/ water) tends to soothe the itch for good- I usually put a tiny blob of paste right over the center of the bite, then place a band-aid over it to keep the paste on, usually for at least a few hours. It seems the most popular itch/bite products have the active ingredient of sodium bicarbonate, so this is how we came to try this remedy out :).

I live in Florida and am a native. Mosquitoes don't bite me and never have in my 60 years. But the buzzing can drive you nuts if you're out and about. One good way to stop that is to grow lavender, ( kills fleas too), lemon grass, lemon garlic, peppermint, sweet mint and spearmint. Either grow it in pots,(as it can become invasive), or place in planters around the patio area and it will stop the buzzing because the flying pests don't like the fragrant plants. Citronella doesn't work at all.

There is actually an organic variant. Instead of all those chemicals, put a paradise fish (cold-water alternative to the betta) in the bucket. One such fish eats thousands of mosquitoes in nature. Some people make ponds with them in their gardens for this purpose.

what chemicals lol? dawn? yeast is a living bacteria and brown sugar is the least processed sugar. the mosquito bits and mosquito dunks that are so effective are a bacteria that infects and kills the larvae, of course fish will eat them too. nowhere in this video were any chemical pesticides mentioned or used

I had rain barrels in the garden near the house. When they are full of larvae easily seen swimming near the surface, I'd squirt some liquid soap into the barrel making it impossible for the larvae to breathe and they die. Mosquitos will use open water in broad daylight to lay eggs which hatch in a day or two.

My answer to the mosquito problem is, i walk over to my hammock with a electric fly swatter. I lay down and use my body to attract them. I swat lots of them. When I do this a few times, i don't get bothered the rest of the summer. Good video from Sacramento

@sassytherabbit
@sassytherabbit 8 күн бұрын
@@Isalsero1 I make a paste out of coconut oil and baking soda. Maybe 1/2 cup coconut oil and a few teaspoons of baking soda. Then I add a few teaspoons aloe that I blend at home (I think store bought is ok). Then about six drops each of tea tree and lavender essential oil, and a few drops of vitamin e. I buy a bottle of liquid vitamin e, or you can use vitamin capsules and squeeze the fluid in. :) It will be a little runny, so you take a little of this and put it on the bite and let it dry there before wiping it off with a damp cloth. If you have a lot of bites, an Epsom salt bath provides relief as well.

Great Info! Here in Thailand there are more than plenty of mosquitos - My family and I have suffered Dengue Fever and Chikungunya [crazy name but a terrible disease] . I've tried most commercially available anti mosquito devices - even gas warfare with a home fogging machine! Thanks to you Jag, I'm going to the hardware store tomorrow and getting a black bucket or three! And, I'm also going to have to change my predominately black T-shirt wardrobe I guess.... 😅

I'm on the rainforest side of Hawaii island. Very wet here, mosquitoes thrive year round. I read about mosquitoes being attracted to black / dark colors and started working in white long sleeve shirts and it did make a noticable difference. Plus a white shirt is cooler than black in the sun, which absorbs more heat. Bad breath and body odor also help mosquitoes find you faster, so I always brush my teeth and wash up before heading outside.

I never heard about using a black bucket but will try that. Right now I have a mosquito magnet in my backyard & it's been running since early spring. It caught a lot of them in the beginning but there aren't many now. I just bought some Sparta mosquito traps and will be checking them after 30 days. Was using a blue bucket but will go buy a few black ones and put mosquito dunks in them as they have always worked. Thanks for the tips. FLY NAVY!!!

For personal defense, you can also tuck a scented dryer sheet somewhere into your clothes; the belt works best as it is about mid-level on your body. The scent interferes with the skeeters' ability to detect you. =^[.]^=
