How to get rid of leather creases is a question often asked. There is a huge obsession with creasing in one's shoes and the idea to either prevent it or cure it. Well, the reality is that is unpreventable and really uncurable. But, there are ways to mitigate how deep the creases set into your leather and how to get rid of smaller creasing.
In this video, I show you how to do just that with a few simple steps. Some complain that they don't own a heat gun. Well, guess what? They are under $30 on Amazon. It is just like buying shoe polish so if you are someone who cares about keeping the shoes as creased-free as possible, well then it should be a simple investment for you.
While this is a short video to simply show you how to get rid of leather creases, if you actually upkeep your shoes using this method there are some other points to note. If your leather is dry, condition it the night before attempting this. Before using the heat gun, always brush down your shoes. Then re-condition your shoes after using the heat gun. Allow to dry. Then cream polish them and brush them. That would be the full regime method.
Always test the heat gun on the inside heel before attempting to get rid of your leather creases. Black leather is always fine. Museum calf and crust-leather can darken.
Just always remember, that a heat gun is a powerful tool and must be used carefully so as not to damage your shoes.

Do you condition the shoe, especially at the crease area? I have ruined a few pairs of shoes because I was not aware of regular conditioning and they developed cracks. Shoe polish is not enough to prevent cracking.

Great video Justin very useful when considering buying second hand shoes! Silly question… do you have any tips for polishing shoes with contrasting stitching/broguing other than being extremely careful? Sorry if you’ve answered this before. Cheers!

Or just use a neutral color polish. I do that on my hand painted patina shoes, and if I want to put some pigments back into the shoe, I just apply the matching color cream on certain areas.

Great Video as Always Justin... Please do a video on Long-term maintenance of mirror shine as well. I have a few pairs that I have maintained a mirror shine for over 7 years now. I do condition them but ofcourse the toe and heel which i just maintain once in a while if cracking occurs do not absorb the conditioner due to layers of waxes. Now should I remove these layers and condition them or keep going as I already am?

Any advice on considering tannage - chrome tanned vs veg tanned, etc? Shell vs calf? I have heard differing things.
@theshoesnob_official
@theshoesnob_official 5 ай бұрын
Veg tanned calf is highly volatile so would avoid. This video is about chrome calf which creates the majority of dress leather shoes out there. I do not wear shell so cannot comment.

May I ask you, which temperature you have used with your heat gun? There are so many different types of heat guns. On the one hand, I would like to try this method, which you have thanksfully presented here, on the other hand, I won't like to destroy the leathershoe with a heat gun, which has a T-range of 300-500 degress celsius. (Sorry, we use celsius in Germany - also your heat guns brand comes from Germany :D ). Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
@theshoesnob_official
@theshoesnob_official 4 ай бұрын
Hello, on my heat gun there are 5 levels of air blowing. I tend to use either the 4 or 5 position. It is not as much as the heat as it is how far away you are and how much time you are leaving it in one area. I almost never let it stay in one position for more than a second. I am always kind of swaying the nozzle back and forth. Becauae yes if left too long in one place it can and will burn the leather.
@RoiDuJeu
@RoiDuJeu 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for answering this fast and for your tip with the air blowing. Nevertheless, I guess, it is better to use a temperature of round about 100 °C (= 212 °F) then 500 °C (= 932 °F), nore? Always nice to learn new thinks about leather shoes and its right treatment.

@@RoiDuJeu sorry I womt know the temps to be honest. If I presume the each setting represents 100 Celsius, then I am quite unsure if the first setting is really going to do much. It might. I have never actually took the time to try as I am usually moving fast ;-) maybe give it a go and let me know

Wiping acetone to remove creases? That doesnt even make sense as acetone is used solely for stripping the finish
@Phrill85

@@theshoesnob_official If it's bookbinder leather or some other finishing on top which is the cause of the wrinkling then acetone would remove the creasing/finishing.
@theshoesnob_official
@theshoesnob_official 5 ай бұрын
@@Phrill85 that still doesnt make sense to me as wrinkling/creasing comes from the movement of the leather not the finish. Finishes like that are nothing more than a coating. They should not create creasing in this sense. But would be curious to be proved wrong
@Phrill85
@Phrill85 5 ай бұрын
@@theshoesnob_official Yeah, you're right in most cases. I just saw it done on the Elegant Oxford's youtube. So I tried it on a cheap pair I had from Charles Tyrwhitt. I believe it had some kind of acrylic finish which gave it a shine, so the creasing is kind of like what you get with loose grain(delamination of the upper most layer) Using acetone removed some of the wrinkling on top. I'm a big believer in your articles on creasing, but the more I learn about leather I also believe that the print/ finishing or the way it is tanned will affect the creasing. Which is why some leathers like grained leather will kind of roll more than crease. So many factors 😊

@@Phrill85 interesting. Well Preston is a master at his craft and has superseded even my knowledge in shoe care so maybe its true. In all honesty, as I never use bookbinder my only experience with it was shining it, but not removing it's creases. I don't even have test pairs to try ;-) Thanks for sharing
