When you buy a new pair of leather shoes, it is VERY important to make sure you are taking the right steps BEFORE you wear them! Following these 4 steps will not only make your new shoes look even better, but they will also prolong the life of the shoes.
Step 1 - Condition the shoes
Step 2 - Apply shoe cream (Optional)
Step 3 - Apply 1-2 light coats of a good shoe wax
Step 4 - Use cedar shoe trees

You guys are full of it! Some people need to maintain a mirror shine because of their jobs. It's a pain in the ass to repair a scratched mirror shine! Why not do something that can prevent the scratch in the first place?? J. A., thanks for the tip!! I've got one for you: Have a stitcher sew some cotton flannel bags for you, with the nap facing out. That way, when you invert the bag, the nap will be against your shoes!

Thanks for the education about shoe care and shoe construction. I bought my first really quality shoes (Allen Edmonds) in 1985. I thought they were expensive at the time. I ended up having them resoled five times and getting regular wear out of them for over 12 years. And I didn't know enough to condition them when they were new. If I had . . . I might still be wearing them. But those shoes taught me to pay up and cry once, then smile for a decade. I was also amazed at how comfortable a dress shoe could be for wearing 12 or 14 hours a day. As a result of these videos I am buying some Potter & Sons and Saphir products from your site.

Always sun out your shoe tree, they obsorbed moisture, so they become new again for the purpose.
@FrankEdavidson
@FrankEdavidson 3 жыл бұрын
It's best to buy trees with the shoes. High end shoes such as bespoke and John Lobb's ready to wear will come with a proper-fitting last similar to the last the shoes were made on as will some higher mid-range shoes and boots. A well-fitting shoe tree is best, whatever the material. Any other shoe tree is next to pointless. If they are not a snug fit under the complete vamp and into the heel curve then you may have to file and/or build up your trees to fit shoes with old leather nailed or bonded onto the trees similar to what bespoke lastmakers do when a customer returns after a period of time for a new pair of shoes.

Cedar does absorb moisture which is why it's lovely to creosote, oh and used for shoe trees. It is prone to splitting though which is something to be aware of if you have to pin or bond leather to it to build out your trees. Extreme dry wet cycles splits cedar. Don't use trees to dry out shoes - sit them on their side for good air circulation around the soles and let them dry naturally. Beech is sometimes used for shoe trees. Though it's less durable I prefer cedar for it's odour and I can apply cedar oil once a year

Great KZbin videos' I have learned so much about shoes and what to look for. I realized that I have been pretty much been purchasing average to junky shoes. I have really no use to buy Allen Edmonds and other high quality shoes. But I have followed your videos and learned what to look for in a well built shoe in the near luxury brands. Have purchase 2 pair of Merchanti Fiorentini's a burgundy wholecut and a Navy Cap Toe that appear to be very well made these are in the $150 price point. My 3 pair which totally surprise me was a black ElANROMAN Cap Toe that has a Blake stitched sole at an amazing price of $100. Not over concerned about their longevity since I work from home, but we go out or I have to go out of town to a client site I always want to look my best. And it is very true you can tell a lot about someone by their shoes. How they look, if they are cheap, and how they are kept.

I bought some nice quality shoes at auction and they are great, some nearly new. I agree shoe trees are very important but I scrimped on them because they are pricey ($25-$30 pair). In the meantime I put some cheap plastic ones in them that sort of work to keep the shape but they are not as good as cedar wood ones. I am checking auction-discount sites and buying cedar ones when I find good deals.

I just bought my first pair of "nice shoes" Standard finish. Renovatuer was stripping off brown - it was on my fingers and polishing cloth, the leather looked to have very slight uneven color in a few small spots afterwards. I strongly recommend on new shoes of any kind you use a pure cream as mentioned and not a cream/cleaner. It is not worth the risk.

Nice I kind of do the same, I do not care so much about the fabric finishing, I want to give my shoes a good start. Then I do not have to overkill it. People think I polish my shoes a lot tough 😂 I basicly brush them of 30 sec after every use, and put trees in them. If they are dirty like a little mudd, I vipe them of with a very damp cloth. If scuffs I put on a little bit of dark polish. Ocasionaly I put some renovature mainly on the creeses, do the edges and polis them allaround.

I've been seeing a lot of people going with Saphir lately, and I"m guessing it's better. Can you say anything about how/why it's better? Thanks! It's much better! It's also pricey, but it goes a long way, and it's worth every penny. You won't find any petroleum products in Saphir; it's all natural. Petroleum products are not good for leather products. I think T and H have a video of a pair of shoes that had been polished with Kiwi for at least a decade, but never conditioned. When they stripped the wax off, they found severe cracks in the leather of the upper. There was no way to repair it. If the owner had used a Saphir conditioner - there are several - a few times a year, he might still be wearing those shoes! I figure, if you have a pair of shoes or boots that you care enough to repair, you care enough for Saphir!

Maybe you've already done this but it's escaped my searches, but can you do one comprehensive video about all the Saphir product line and how and when to use them. No, I'm not associated with the brand but recognize they make, arguably, the premier shoe care products. Before I discovered your channel and excellent videos, I watched several on the Kirby Allison channel. No disrespect to him, but he illustrates shining shoes wearing a white dress shirt with cufflinks and with the laces still in the shoes. What a difference after seeing your expert understanding and even eviscerating shoes that look like they were retrieved from a compost heap and transforming them into better than new masterpieces! Yes, my bad. Anyway, I decided to to up my shoe maintenance game and sent for a raft of Saphir products even ordering them from a retailer in Canada since they had a few items I couldn't locate here in the states online. I'm sure I was naive and ordered way more than I actually needed and spent an embarrassing amount on my order. Can you please show your 127k subscribers the correct sequence of use and sort out the confusing array of products. Yes, you did mention that in this video, but an even more comprehensive video would be appreciated now that you will be my new supplier of Saphir. With thanks! You brothers are the real deal. Never thought I'd be spending hours binging shoe videos, as if I'd just discovered, Game of Thrones or a must see Netflix series!

It seems to me there are very few leather nourishing/sealing/protecting products that don't darken/change the colour of lighter shoes, such as tan shoes. I have even found that each subsequent application darkens the leather even more, so the colour of the shoe changes quite dramatically over time, this is something of a challenge in shoe care i find.

This is a perfect, short-and-sweet summary. Appreciate you guys! It seems that many believe natural shoe polish/wax shouldn't be used. Is this sage advice? If so, what wax would one use for a nice pair of white leather sneakers? Also, how often is it recommended to clean, condition, and polish one's shoes in order to reap the benefits, without overdoing it and potentially ruining the shoes?
@TrentonHeath
@TrentonHeath 4 жыл бұрын
Skeptastic Glad you enjoyed! Most of the Saphir line of shoe creams/waxes are primarily natural ingredients, and they’re some of the best polishes on the market. In regards to white leather sneakers, I’d recommend just a good shoe conditioner. Again, most of the Saphir conditioners would work. If you want to add a slight shine, you could add a shoe cream. Creams will also add some conditioners and mild waxes to the leather. How often you apply it depends upon how often you wear the shoes. If you wear them frequently, applying conditioner and/or cream once every couple of weeks or so would keep the shoes in great shape.

I have found shoes trees with sizes. Like in large and exlarge. What size shoes tree do I need for size 11 or 11 1/2 ?

I own several pairs of Frye boots, some made with heavy patina and some with stonewashed leather with heavy scuffs in the toes from the factory. The look really cool but I can't find anything on how to protect either without ruining the appearance. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Once you have done a complete regiment (leather conditioner, cream, and then wax), how do I maintain the shoe? Do I have to strip everything off and then re-apply or can I keep adding layers of wax every few months?

Just got some new boots and the leather seemed a bit dry - used creme universal twice over two days but after a quick buff, still seems, to me, a bit dry. Do I need to use another creme or probably fine?

Hmm.. the monk strap shoes that you have as an example in this video (Beckett Simonon) is beautiful. Is that Oak or Tan color, I'm curious.

Would this apply to leather sneakers as well such as Jordan 1’s? I know the leather is no where near the same quality as the boots you speak about but I want to take care of them as much as possible.

I just bought a pair of double monkstrap boots , cognac museum from Meermin. I don't know exactly what to call the look but to me it looks like blotches in the color, would you recommend treating the shoes the same as a patina, to just use a good conditioner or the saphir renavatur??

I just stumbled across this channel and I'm really happy I did, this is great advice! I just have one question though, will the wax also make it waterproof or water repellent? Or is there a different product that can help with this?
@TrentonHeath

Hi! We’re happy you stumbled upon our channel! Wax is a nice thing to use, sparingly, on dress shoes, etc. It won’t necessarily waterproof the shoes, but it does add a layer or two of protection from dirt, dust, water, etc. If you’re needing for your shoes to be waterproofed or water repellent, then there are other items for that on the market. We carry several on our website and in-store. Tarrago Nano Protector is a really good water repellent, and Saphir Dubbin is a great waterproofer.

@@TrentonHeath wonderful! Thanks for the tip. Saphir Dubbin then, great. These are boots from chrome tanned hides, should I go through the steps you showed here in the vid as well, or will it be enough to just use the Saphir Dubbin then?

I just saw that you guys have a ship-in resole service. I'm in East TN and a cobbler in Knoxville screwed up a pair of 1000 Mile's and did shoddy work on some AE Independence line. Now I'm afraid to take my nice dress shoes anywhere. I'll strongly consider shipping to you guys when the time comes.

@@AaronHousefly I'd prefer not to say, as maybe my experience was a one-off. There are at least three cobblers in town.

I got a pair of Trickers in marron color. I want to darken the brown a bit and not do a whole dye job. Anyone know how much a dark brown Saphir cream will really impact the color? Should I go more gradual?

Should shoes or boots be conditioned before or after polishing?

Does shoe cream have any conditioning properties? If you skipped step 1 and started with the shoe cream application, would this condition the leather?
