Mealybugs are like a plague. They spread rapidly from plant to plant and it can be very difficult to get rid of them.
As soon as you notice mealybugs on your succulents, IMMEDIATELY quarantine them far away from the rest of your plants. Depending on the severity of infestation, you may even want to treat any and all plants in the vicinity.
My new favorite solution that I am excited to share with you today has been working really well for me over the past 5 months. I wanted to give it a thorough try before I shared it with all of you. I have been using the “Safer Insecticidal Soap.” I have tons of plants and it has been a challenge trying to control the EVIL mealy bugs. This works fast on heavy infestations. It kills soft-bodied insects like mealybugs as well as aphids, spidermites, scale, and whiteflies. It works by damaging their outer layer, causing dehydration and death within hours. It is gentle enough to spray directly onto your plants and has no stinky odor. It is definitely more gentle to my plants than alcohol. Another bonus is that it is compliant for use in organic gardening and it is safe to use around children and pets. The potassium salts of fatty acids are derived from the natural acids found in animal fats and plant oils. This solution breaks down into its natural elements within 7 to 10 days, leaving no residual impact on the environment.

I had to deal with these infestations too. It's trial and error but like you said here, alcohol does the trick usually. I don't like using store bought insecticides on my plants. Great video like #10

Ewww, so not like this pest , but I know it’s very hard not to get it . My pilea recently got it and I’m so glad I am able to treat it right away . Rubbing alcohol does wonder coz that ma what I use right away. Thank you for this great information .Lets get that bad boys out in our indoor plants.

They really are gross! I have had much better luck with the insecticidal soap. The concentrate is pretty inexpensive too. Some of my plants did not do well with the rubbing alcohol. Hope you are having a great weekend!

I learned about using clove oil with water in sprayer. Will numb insects to death. To make strong use more than 10 drops to small sprayer shake and spray. It's organic.

Forgot to share a tip that does help when ya get a new plant . I spray mine off with the mist or shower setting on my water hose . Depending on how delicate the plant is . This cleans dirt off and washes away some bugs and eggs . Then I spray the plants with alcohol. Sometimes pure 70% . Sometimes diluted . Aeoniums get half water / half 70% alcohol. Then I take my air compressor with a blower attachment and blow off excess water . If ya don’t have a compressor, canned air for cleaning electronics will work . Just don’t get the can too close to the plant cuz freezing air comes out sometimes. Then I spray with alcohol in a Flairosol bottle ( Amazon) . It makes the spray mist more fine to get all surfaces with the alcohol. Then I put the plants in front of a fan after the alcohol has set for 10 minutes or so. This helps dry the plant and prevent crown rot from moisture sitting on them . It’s an involved process. But it does help a lot . I continue to check the plants and keep them quarantined for 2 weeks or until I’m absolutely certain there are no pests . Even with all this , I’ll still find they stray Mealybug here and there . Hate them so much.

Do you treat the soil because when you spray them off the leaves they may fall into the soil. I know when you treat spider mites you need to treat your soil with Diatomaceous earth as they fall into the soil.

I have about 30 plants and all because of one clearance plant, they all have it. I lost 4 plants already and I'm afraid of losing all of them 😭 I used alcohol and water mixture and it dried the plants out. Now I'm using a soap and water spray. I hope it works..

Oh no!! That is the worst! I try not to use the alcohol since some of my plants do not respond well to it. I have had great success with the insecticidal soap. Make sure you spray again in a few days to get any you may have missed!! They really are a nightmare!! Keep me posted on how it goes!!

@@moodyblooms well, I tried the dish soap and water since I didnt have the other soap yet and I was in panic mood lol. Now I have plants that are turning brown and have indented brown marks? I'm assuming it is from sunburn? I sprayed them at night with the soapy water and then rinsed them off in the morning but we had a lot of sun lately...

Katarina Elizabeth I haven’t tried just dish soap and water. I’d for sure keep them out of direct sun for at least a day after spraying them with anything. Even water on leaves in direct sun can cause burn marks. Sending you positive plant vibes!!

Does the soap remove the farina from succulents ? That’s the reason I’ve not used it . Love my white powdery succulents with farina and would hate to remove it . Thanks for the video . Have you used the soap on Aeonium? I have a bunch of new Aeoniums and they’ve had eggsacs all over them . I’ve sprayed them all with the hose and then alcohol spray every few days . But ya know Aeoniums . They’re so tightly packed with leaves that it’s hard to get in all these spaces . You’re the one who found all the thrown away Aeoniums aren’t you ? Loved that video ❤️

Yes! I rescued the aeoniums and I def spray them with insecticidal soap. I actually spray it on all my succulents with or without farina. I feel like it is less damaging to the farina than alcohol. And desperate times call for desperate measures!

I haven't never heard,or even delt with melly bugs until I moved to San Antonio, Texas. I have had plants in my apartments that I have lived in over the years.Never had this issue,did they just come into existence?

Mealybugs seemingly appear out of nowhere, but oftentimes, they're brought into your home by way of another plant from the nursery or plant store. They come from warmer climates and are highly attracted to moisture, so they often gravitate to over-watered plants. Longtailed mealybugs were first described in 1867 and the vine mealybug was first discovered in South Africa in 1914. They are such evil little bugs!!
