it's nice to see someone addressing the least mentioned yet most debilitating (for guitarists) pains and aches. My hand has nerve damage and arthritis. It is very painful at times to play and I now tend to not practice too much (saving my hand for band rehearsals and gigs).

Tell me about it man, it sucks having the drive and desire to spend hours practicing and only to be limited by your own body.

Indeed, it doesn’t take nearly the amount of force we think it takes to play correctly. Fantastic advice. Thank you for sharing it.

Good call on the playing position. I've been playing for 38 years and figured this out many years ago. I've told many people this over the years. At first they were all like "this feels a little weird". Then I said stant up with you strap on....now notice the guitar orientation. And then they're like "oh shit..its the same...then it clicks in their head. Glad you mentioned it...🤟🤟🍻

Great video. For me the problem has always been excess tension. I don’t think it gets enough attention, and I really believe it’s the catalyst for all rsi’s related to guitar playing. I’ve dealt with aches and pains for years, but since I’ve been extra mindful of my body’s tension, everything has gotten better.

100% agree with this. I thought my guitar days were numbered until I stopped blacksmithing the thing and completely reduced tension. It works!

Good stuff. Here's some tips from a guy who has played over 50 years. Get a set up and lite strings. I play acoustic mainly now days I take a brake every hour ,I play alot . I have back problems and play in a recliner. Hand problems too , I found this stuff called Capsiva (available online only) its roll on . Try it for what hurts. I've had the right forearm give pain , switching my guitar kinda pointing forward Strumming down at the hip . Like holding a shotgun stops the forarm pain.

I had to reposition my hand to the claw position for accuracy and now that hurts sometimes but getting used to it. Thanks for the free videos, Claus!

Claus tank you for explaining elbow pain, I couldn't figure out if it was guitar related but think it is now. K&M great quality can vouch for tat. Using foot platform 💯 now then and actually adjusting strap LOWER! Wow, as usual great -- thanks!

Love your videos, 75 years and still in the game, but bends and and certain chords stretches are getting harder for me. So far no bad injuries. But I do worry about it.

Due to a rotator cuff surgery I switch to playing with the guitar between my legs, also known as the classical position, nearly 20 years ago and never went back. It may not look as "cool" but it's a far more comfortable position to play in. In addition to that, hand stretching and hand massage has really help a lot with sore hands. Great video as usual, Claus.

Most people don't know that before Stevie Ray Vaughan passed he had moved to lighter gauged strings (11s in Eb if I'm correct) because he was having issues with RSI. And I'm sure people would have still appreciated his playing, music and tone regardless of string gauge!

I prefer to stand up and walk around while playing, keeping the head up.Also to exercise every morning with neck turns, limb stretches on a mat , treadmill walks and finger exercises.The finger exercises are great, from Pebber Brown.

I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis 5 years ago throughout my body..lots of surgeries all over and several bad discs in spine and neck area..and now 10 months ago add psoriatic arthritis to my list..playing guitar since 1985 and the severe tendonitis I have in left elbow area just makes me so freaking miserable playing..the 2 arthritis's are attacking my right side elbow area now and after about 10-15 minutes of playing it gets so unbearable I have to stop. it really sucks because playing guitar and been getting into the bass lately has been a huge part of my life..its ice packs and heating pads for me before playing.. This is good info here if though.

Yeah, I followed these ( _and you should_ ) but still developed tendonitis/tendonosis after practicing for 5-7 hours every day (that's *not* including the breaks I took throughout the day) for 2 years, taking a couple days off every 4 weeks (following the advice of Claus' videos). I had warning signs about the tendonitis but it started off somewhat subtle so I "pushed through it", thinking it wasn't tendonitis until it became clear that I had to stop. It's now been 7 months since I had to stop practicing guitar, and it still hasn't healed completely. I recently started bringing a little guitar practice back, but even a mere 30 minutes a day feels like it's pushing it, which of course sucks. I miss practicing, and look forward to the day I can practice like I used to. Learning guitar really is a long term process, bodies have hard limits. Pursue the passion, but maintain self-awareness and listen to your body's signs when they show up. Be careful, and patient. I wasn't.

Check out the Flexbar and then look up the Tyler twist and the Reverse Tyler twist videos. These things work and have been adopted by physical therapists. And they are cheap. I have nothing to do with the company, these things just really helped me. Also what helped is I met someone who had been through this and was feeling like it wouldn't ever get better. He said he had been in the same shape as well and now was playing beautiful so it gave me hope. And things did get all better. Diet is important too.
@Mr.Meowgical2 жыл бұрын
@@defenderstargate1447 I appreciate the response. I failed to mention that my tendonitis was primarily in my left hand and wrist, and at one point a little bit in the forearm. I never had the tennis elbow problem.
@defenderstargate14472 жыл бұрын
@@Mr.Meowgical A lot of times issues in the elbow can manifest themselves in deferred pain to the wrist area. I had that myself. (In fact adding this edit as that is how it all started out - I was trying to treat my wrist but nothing was really wrong with it). One way of telling would be to squeeze the muscles of your forearm and see if that alleviates pain in the wrist. Of course one must be careful with self-diagnosis so getting it looked at is always good - just don't take what they say as gospel as they can be wrong.
