I've just always bought Safers natural slug bait from my hardware store. It's volcanic ash pellets. Wet it, they eat it. Wrecks their guts. Seems to be good for 2 weeks of slug free gardening before slug issues start up again.

Amazing sites and information, so tghank you very much. I live here in Nova Scotia Canada and I use seaweed in my garden and it stops snails all together. You layer the seaweed ontop of the garden and as it drys the snails will not crawl across it. Plus the seaweed gives amazing fertilizer to the garden

I don't kill slugs but I deter 99.9% of them with two strips of copper tape or wire around my veg beds connected to a battery. The gruesome gastropods will cross the first strip but as soon as he/she touches the second placed about 3/8 inch away the circuit is made and they coil back with a severe headache. This is the ONLY system that works in my garden so the 'All you can eat' salad bar is now closed.

I’m in San Diego near the coast and snails are everywhere. Before I built my raised bed, I cleared the fence, Iceplant, and area where it be. I picked off the fence more than 40 snails over 3 days and tossed them into the canyon. I bought Corry’s Slug/Snail Killer. Followed the instructions, and haven’t seen them since.

I've found that cinnamon is very effective at controlling slugs. Salt is also effective, but you don't want to use that near soil obviously. But, it works great in dark stairwells or other areas where it stays cooler and they can hide out during the day.

After years of battling slugs with beer bait and hand picking, You presented Sluggo . I've resisted buying extra products because I'm a hardcore permaculture minimalist. But I applied some last week and voila' ! Not a single slug on my two large beds of lettuce and kale so I'm willing to make this compromise because it's organic. Thank you Brian :)

Living in England all of my life, I had a lot of issues with slugs and snails, as you can imagine. I tried so many things to stop them, but nothing worked. You are certainly correct about the myths, however I find copper has an issue. Copper will get dirty fairly quickly, which means that the slimy things will get over unharmed. You will also need to renew it frequently. I found just 2 deterrents from getting to my produce. One was to use marigolds as companion plants, and the other was a product named Slug Gone, by the company Vitax. It is completely natural, degrades, and while not perfect, it works pretty well. Unfortunately I couldn't attract frogs. I will do a video on this as well soon. Yours reminded me that I am still to do it. Thank you, as always great viewing. I have a long way to catch up on my channel.

One thing I found that works great is twist ties that have spikey burs on them for decorating I guess, but can be found at the dollar store and you just have to make a circle with it around your plant. Slugs and snails hate spiny things , so they will crawl up to it hit the spines and crawl away. Hope this helps someone.

I've had some luck with those copper plated pot scrubbers. You can unravel them, forming a mesh tubular netting. Each one is about 18 inches long and can be stretched around a medium planter and twist tied in place. It makes about a 2 inch barrier. Two for a buck at Dollar Tree.

Hedgehogs Brian!! They're the gardeners best friend in UK/Ire!! Only native ones though, not the light coloured little pet ones. Regarding others, I found beer traps effective, but they seem to attract slugs from far away so I only use them where a plant has frequent visitors, like my cabbages this year. I've tried diatomaceous earth/celite in a spray but have yet to find a sprayer nozzle that doesn't block. Copper tape is good, but can tarnish have a film after outdoor exposure, I use a little scrubby pad to brush it up. Garden is too dry for frogs, and finally snakes/lizards....I live in Ireland man, St. Patrick drove all the snakes out years ago! :D

ducks are AMAZING at eating slugs!! soon there will be none and then I started digging worms for my grrrls. The best ducks for brains and being good pets (almost dog like) are the muscovies; quiet, quackless ducks. Face only a mother could love but once You get used to them, You will be forever hooked! And duck eggs are a thousand times better than chicken eggs. can't make good French pastry without ;-) They are messy and LOVE their water though... Need a small coup to be protected from predators while they sleep but... if all that is OK... You will never have another bug of any kind.

I've tried everything you mentioned except reptiles (I'd rather have the snails). I find a nightly snail hunt works the best. Armed with a Ziploc baggie with a teaspoon of salt dissolved in 2/3 cup of water, I roam the perimeter of my property plopping every snail I find into the baggie. The first night I got 50, every night after that the numbers declined until I was down to 5 or so. Zip up the baggie and throw it in the garbage - problem solved. The best time to find them is after you have watered your lawn or garden in the evening.

Three things that work for me: Narrow copper strips definitely don't work. Two strips spaced about a half inch apart work better. But the ultimate is to connect a waterproofed 9v battery to the two strips. The snails will happily go across the first strip, but when they reach the second strip, they complete the circuit and get 9v running through them. They move back very quickly. It doesn't harm them, but it's an effective barrier. Something that is available in the UK (I don't know about other countries) is packets of live, nematodes. These are microscopic worm-like creatures and there are millions of them in each pack. You put them in a watering can and water your garden. The slugs and snails eat the nematodes, which then start to eat the slug/snail from the inside, killing them. As the nematodes are alive, you have to use them as soon as you get them (or keep them sealed in their pack in the refrigerator for a couple of days). They work and can be effective for about 6 to 8 weeks. In the UK and much of Europe, Asia and Africa, we have the luxury of a small, spiky, nocturnal creature; the hedgehog. If you're fortunate enough to have one or more in your garden, they will eat as many slugs and snails as they can find. I get a family of 3 hedgehogs visiting my garden most nights and they are most welcome.

you can also use lime that is use for masonry around your plants or apply it on the slug to kill them.

I love the idea of adding a water feature. Anyone know (in Zone 10, SoCal) if frogs would naturally show up? if not, where can i find native frogs to introduce?
@EK-wi2me
@EK-wi2me 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they will show up. You can innoculate the pond with a little bit (bucketful) of river/ creek or nearby pond water if you want life to start quicker. It is better for it to be a still pond vs one with fountains. Plant some water loving plants to give shelter to the frog spawn. And stick mosquito dunks in to stop mosquito larvae. Enjoy!!!

If you add a water feature, they will appear.

Just add goldfish. They eat mosquito larvae. Do not feed the fish after a couple of weeks. They eat the larvae and moss, which will establish itself. Water lillies are a must for water gardens so the goldfish will have shade. Plant in DIRT not pitting mix. The fish will survive the winter without being feed, even with ice on it. Do sweep off the snow. The plants need light or they will die.

Coffee grounds work. Worked for me. Zero snails this year in my strawberries and I lost next to no strawberries to slugs. And it has been plenty wet out, too. Last year without coffee grounds we lost plenty to snails and slugs, this year no snails and very few slugs.

I like your sense of humor. I would say that slugs "shimmy" across :) We have lizards in the cottage garden and they do a great job on the slugs and snails.

I have several anole lizards that live in my garden, small frogs which I hear at night, and I have started using slugo. In the past, there have been snails, but they haven't done a lot of damage, and I have never seen slugs. But this year there are almost no snails, but the population of slugs has grown to almost plague level in my garden (the only difference this year is I have added a lot more mulch due to soil erosion in the yard itself, and for moisture retention in the garden). I have several anoles that live in the garden, and have sprinkled Slugo around, plus went on a few 'hunts' where I just caught and killed any I could find, and while the numbers have somewhat decreased, they are still everywhere and doing damage.

Just saw a video of using chunks of Irish Spring in little pouches or socks attached to plant poles near your veggies. Humans love the aroma of it but critters and bugs don't. You would have to change them once a month when the smell dissipates. Also a Dollar Store buy. Hope this helps.

I grow tomatoes, peppers and zucchini. I noticed a lot of holes on my peppers. I read to search for slugs with a flash light after dark suggested by a comment in your sites. Sure enough. I just did search with my flashlight I just discover 20 minutes ago I saw the Slugs. Tinny slugs were eating free without being invited. I picked them out and my son said to spread salt at the bottom of my pepper container.. I will check next day to see if this work. Thank you for your great suggestions.

Here in Norway we have an invasive shell-less snail species that has no natural enemies. My goto remedies are to clear underbrush/weeds to limit hiding spots for snails and do a daily perimeter patrol at dusk with a pair of scissors

Sluggo works. I haven't had a slug and snail problem since the first drought a few years back. They were starved out or dried out. Only recently have I found one or two snails in one of my raised beds. I do what I did before I found out about Sluggo: Pick them up and throw them in the street. It helps seal the McAdam. I used to pay the kids to collect them, too. Nothing like a bribe. However, my neighbor's grand-daughter was visiting one day, and when she saw the snails in the street, she decided to rescue them by re-introducing them to my garden. When she found out I had been throwing them in the street in the first place, she would never have anything to do with me again. The price you pay sometimes!

No slugs or snails here this year. We are on the drought side but, I did try beer when we had slugs when I lived in rain country in AK. Beer did not work. Not one drown slug. My method was to pick off the slugs and put them in ziplocks, ewwww! Wish I’d known about Sluggo back then. Thank you for another great vid.

Wow!! Slugs oozing across a razor blade??? Too much. When we lived in Washington state, the slugs were terrible and there was a product called Deadline that worked great. It was liquid and you literally just drew a line with it around your plants. I’m with you on the snakes. Last year I had several snake encounters on the property and I always had some friends say “that’s a good snake and will eat the venomous snakes.” Hey, if it gives me a heart attack when I see it, it’s a BAD snake. 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for another great video, Brian!❤️🥰❤️

Round eye snakes are the good snakes not that you’re sticking around long enough to find that out 😆 but keep in mind they are great mouse and rat killers. My neighbor had seen snakes around his property since moving in and found a nest near his house so he destroyed it and the mother. As soon as that happened the mice moved in instead and still has issues 2 yrs later. If you have a lot of snakes it’s because you have a food source they want. I just leave them alone if they leave me alone as long as they aren’t venomous.

I was thinking of a wide, real sticky tape rapped around my buckets. But after listening to this,I’m thinking their slime probably will stop them from sticking to the tape. Think I might try the copper tape. I have used the slug bate successfully before so might try that first as I’m sure copper tape is not cheap.
